The first sheet of glass fell inward. Cold flooded the vault. Seven alarms began at seven different pitches, close enough together to become one mechanical scream. Noah turned toward the nearest chamber. Inside, a woman struck the glass with both hands as preservation light failed around her shoulders. Two chambers farther down, something with silver skin folded against its restraints while its panel changed from dormant to unstable.

The black-gold blood did not behave like normal injury. It crawled toward active claim lines before gravity pulled it down. Seraphina noticed first. Jace noticed that she stepped between the blood and everyone else before asking what it meant.

It was evidence, and Jace had learned to respect evidence that scared him.

VAULT CONTAINMENT FAILURE

Vault Integrity: 41%.

Unstable Chambers: 10.

Active Fractures: 7.

Projected Casualties: 7.

Time to First Collapse: 00:01:44.

Jace tried to move and discovered the floor had become ambitious.

Seraphina caught him before his face reached it. "Stay down."

"Busy floor."

His right arm hung useless beside him.

RIGHT-ARM FUNCTION: 8%.

Health: 35/420.

Stamina: 0/160.

Charge: 0/140.

Corruption Load: 92%.

Noah was already at the nearest cracked chamber. He pressed both palms against the seal, then recoiled when the free claim line pulled tight between him and Jace.

Health: 35/420 -> 34/420.

"Do not touch the fracture directly," Theodore said.

He was on one knee beneath the dead recovery field, black-gold light running from his mouth and one nostril. The color spread across his collar like blood that had forgotten how to be liquid. Elijah kept one hand beneath his shoulder.

"You are giving instructions," Jace said.

"The vault does not become less dangerous because you defeated me."

"Disappointing design."

Theodore looked toward the seven chambers. "Their preservation routes were tied to Caleb's stabilization field. When he died, the vault attempted to reroute through me. Your reversal damaged the shared network before it completed."

"So we broke them."

"We broke the thing keeping their cages functional."

Noah looked back. "That is a distinction they may not survive."

Stolen story; please report.

The first chamber flashed.

CHAMBER 117

Preservation Integrity: 23%.

Identity Integrity: 61%.

Ownership Seal: ACTIVE.

Emergency Options:

Transfer to Sunchain custody.

Assign temporary claimant.

Terminate unstable record.

Jace closed the menu.

"Find the common line," he said.

Breach Sight opened through the pain. The vault became a web of gold, black, and pale blue. Every damaged chamber had its own preservation route, but all seven crossed the black-gold pool spreading beneath Theodore. The Collector saw Jace looking.

"My recovery core is still trying to finish the protocol," he said. "Use it."

Elijah tightened his hold. "That will drain what remains."

"Yes."

"How much remains?"

Theodore did not answer.

TARGET CONDITION: THEODORE VOSS

Health: 212/1,640.

Charge: 38/900.

Combat Recovery: OFFLINE.

Loyalty Lock: DAMAGED.

Original Identity Fragment: EXPOSED.

Black-Gold Core Integrity: 17%.

Jace followed the core into the cracked chambers.

"It can hold all seven for ninety seconds," he said.

"One hundred twelve," Theodore corrected. "If the vault accepts me as a living source."

Noah's expression hardened. "That makes you another battery."

"I have been one for longer than you have been awake."

"That does not make it acceptable."

"No," Theodore said. "It makes it available."

The nearest chamber split another inch.

00:01:07.

Jace opened Heir's Claim.

HEIR'S CLAIM

Available Targets:

Seven protected persons.

Seven chambers.

One damaged recovery core.

Recommended Action: Claim protected persons.

He selected the core.

TARGET: THEODORE VOSS RECOVERY CORE

Classification: House Sunchain property.

Current Function: Containment support.

Claiming this structure may inherit attached personnel authority. Accept?

"Decline the authority," Jace said.

INVALID PARTIAL CLAIM.

"Claim the function. Leave the person."

INVALID TARGET DISTINCTION.

Theodore watched the rejected prompts. "You cannot separate them in time."

"You told me that about Noah."

"And I was correct about the risk."

"Bad night for being correct."

Jace marked the line connecting Theodore's identity to the recovery core.

ERROR MARK: PLACED

Target: Personnel Authority Clause.

Integrity: 100% -> 71%.

Error Mark Proficiency: +6 points.

The black-gold light beneath Theodore surged. He bowed forward, one hand striking the floor.

Elijah said, "Aren."

The name did not fix him. It kept his face from going empty.

ORIGINAL IDENTITY RESPONSE

Recognition: PARTIAL.

Voluntary Participation: AVAILABLE.

Jace looked at Theodore. "Your choice."

Theodore's breathing turned rough. "Use the core."

"That is not the whole question."

For the first time, Theodore looked angry.

"Save them."

VOLUNTARY FUNCTION TRANSFER CONFIRMED.

Heir's Claim accepted the answer.

The black-gold pool divided into seven thin lines and entered the cracked chambers. Preservation light returned around the trapped bodies.

CHAMBER COLLAPSE DELAYED

Time Purchased: 00:01:52.

Theodore had used the same core to map Jace's pain and predict where he would move. Now the damaged machinery was holding seven strangers together because Theodore had chosen the function without accepting authority over them. It did not erase what he had done. It also did not become meaningless because it arrived late. Jace was beginning to hate how often both things could remain true.

FREE CLAIM MAINTENANCE

Accumulated Breath Cost: 2 Health.

Health: 34/420 -> 32/420.

Theodore's core failed. Black-gold light spilled from his wrists, mouth, and the old chain marks beneath his skin. He looked down at it with something close to wonder.

Theodore touched the light running over his fingers. It dripped between them and vanished before reaching the floor.

"Does it hurt?" Elijah asked.

Theodore waited, searching for an answer his recovery had removed.

"No," he said. Then his mouth lifted slightly, tired and almost private. "But I wondered whether I still could."
