The answer disappeared beneath a deeper groan. Every chamber light in the vault leaned toward the floor. The cracks spreading through the seven damaged seals did not stop at glass. They crossed the metal bases, entered the black floor, and joined beneath Jace's knees. A line opened through the center aisle wide enough to show pale machinery moving far below.
The Anchor Room felt less like a throne room and more like a utility closet built by a civilization that had mistaken infrastructure for religion. Jace preferred it immediately. Pipes, conduits, and failure points were easier to argue with than crowns.
VAULT STRUCTURAL EMERGENCY
Integrity: 36%.
Supported Chambers: 412.
Unstable Chambers: 10.
Anchor Support: NONE DETECTED.
Estimated Total Collapse: 00:06:00.
The reward panels vanished. The vault replaced them with a map of how everyone would die.
"Useful timing," Jace said.
Seraphina looked toward the far wall. A gold exit had opened behind Theodore and Elijah, narrow and unsteady, leading into Sunchain space. Elijah saw it too.
HOUSE WITHDRAWAL ROUTE
Authorized Personnel: Theodore Voss / Elijah Arden.
Recovered Property: NONE.
Closure: 00:00:42.
"If they leave, we lose the only people who understand this vault," Seraphina said.
"If they stay, House Sunchain finds the route."
Theodore tried to stand. His legs failed beneath him, and Elijah pulled one arm over his shoulders. Jace could have followed. Static Step was still available through Health overdraw. The Collector Mask, the Memory Shard, and Theodore's exposed identity fragment gave Breach Sight enough of a trail to pursue them through the closing route. The System offered the choice before he finished considering it.
EMERGENCY PRIORITY QUEST
Objective A: Capture remaining Sunchain personnel.
Reward: Faction intelligence. Recovery access. House standing leverage.
Objective B: Stabilize indexed prisoners.
Reward: Rescue progression. Vault access. Unknown structural function.
Only one objective can be completed before route closure. Jace looked at the chambers. Inside the nearest one, the woman who had struck the glass was staring back at him. She could see the open route. She could see Theodore being carried toward it. Her panel showed no name.
"Go," Jace told Elijah.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Seraphina turned. "Jace."
"The vault has four hundred twelve people in it."
"Theodore may be the only route into Sunchain."
"Then he knows where to find me."
Theodore's head lifted. Black-gold light still traced his mouth.
"You are releasing an enemy."
"I am declining a chase."
"There is a difference."
"Tonight has been full of those."
Elijah moved toward the exit, then stopped beside Caleb's body. He looked down at the man who had held the protocol together until it killed him. Caleb's gold report still floated above one hand.
FINAL PERSONNEL LOG
Recovery operation: FAILED.
Primary cause: Claimant resistance.
Secondary cause: Internal deviation.
Recommended correction: Elijah Arden.
Elijah closed the report.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN STATUS
Elijah Arden: DESERTER PENDING REVIEW.
Correction Order: QUEUED.
He took Caleb's identification seal, not his weapon, and carried Theodore through the route. Theodore looked back once.
"Aren," Noah said.
The gold opening closed before Theodore answered.
QUEST BRANCH RESOLVED
Sunchain personnel escaped.
Prisoner stabilization selected.
House Sunchain Standing: Ideological Contagion -> Active Recovery Threat.
Elijah Arden Faction Status: DEVIATED.
The floor split again.
00:04:51.
Noah reached Chamber 117. "Tell me what to do."
Jace opened Breach Sight over the vault. The preservation lines were failing from the center outward. Each chamber drew from a buried support structure that no longer recognized the room above it. The vault had been installed inside something older, the way a tenant might run extension cords through a building and later forget the walls had their own wiring.
COLLAPSING VAULT EMERGENCY QUEST
Keep 412 preserved heirs alive.
Current Survivors: 412/412.
Critical Chambers: 7.
Unstable Chambers: 10.
Vault Integrity: 34%.
Failure: Structural collapse. Preservation loss. Safe Zone foundation breach.
Recommended Solution: Restore Sunchain ownership network.
Hidden Alternative: Locate original anchor support.
Time Remaining: 00:04:32.
"Original support," Jace said. "The vault is borrowing something underneath it."
Seraphina opened the lower map. "There is nothing underneath it."
"The map says that."
"The floor also said it was solid."
Noah placed his palm against Chamber 117. The voluntary party line between him and Jace sharpened.
"I can feel a pull below us," he said. "It feels like the chamber did before you broke the ownership tag, except larger."
"Can you follow it?"
"I can try."
"No commands."
"I remember."
Noah closed his eyes. The Free Claim line moved through the chamber, crossed the floor, and descended into the pale machinery below. Jace felt every place it snagged. The pain arrived through his ribs in small, exact bites.
Health: 32/420 -> 29/420.
Heir's Claim Proficiency: 24% -> 28%.
A route appeared.
ANCHOR NETWORK: DORMANT
Local Node: UNKNOWN.
Connected Structures:
Forbidden Palace.
Sunchain Vault.
Manhattan Conduit Layer 7.
Safe Zone Barrier.
Status: DISCONNECTED.
"Found it," Noah said.
The vault tilted. Several chambers slid half an inch toward the central fracture. Seraphina drove white light into the floor and held the nearest row in place.
"Finding it was the easy part," she said.
Liam's voice broke through the territory channel from above.
"Jace, the gold support over the plaza just disappeared."
The Safe Zone dashboard opened beside the vault timer.
SAFE ZONE BARRIER
Integrity: 32%.
Protected Lives: 187.
Approved Charge Source: NONE.
Structural Support: FAILING FROM BELOW.
Emma's voice followed. "Whatever you are doing, do it before the ceiling becomes a treatment decision."
"Working on the local basement."
"That sentence did not help."
The map showed a narrow chamber beneath the vault, sealed by four locks. Three were dead. One pulsed weakly beneath the throne line.
ANCHOR ACCESS REQUIREMENTS
Territory Claim: PRESENT.
Reality Anchor Function: DETECTED.
Living Witness: PRESENT.
Ownership Registration: NOT REQUIRED.
Jace focused on the final line. The System had a room below the vault that did not require an owner. Sunchain had built over it anyway. The central floor opened. A stairwell descended through the machinery, lit by one pale line leading toward a door marked with the Spire's older seal.
STRUCTURE DISCOVERED
ANCHOR ROOM
Status: SEALED.
Network Position: Between throne and buried conduits.
Vault Integrity: 31%.
Available Support Window: 00:02:41.
