James looked at the cracked facade. "First two can. Third has a bad corner. Nobody goes above it."

A thin man dragging a length of street sign behind him stopped at the map.

Jace looked over. "King did not say that."
The man glanced at James. "He picked it."
"James picked it."
"James works for you."
James did not look up from the map. "I work for the people sleeping under broken glass. He happens to own the building that grew out of the street."
"I do not own the street."
The System displayed a correction.

"And stop calling him king."
Benjamin looked at Jace's splinted arm, gray skin, and the blue barrier being held together above them.
"Sure."
He did not sound convinced. They walked the boundary because the System refused to accept James's map without claimant presence. Jace made it thirty yards before Liam brought a chair with wheels salvaged from an office.
"I can walk."
"You can ride or Emma can carry you."
"Chair has dignity."
"Chair has one bad wheel."
The block took shape through labor instead of light. James assigned crews to move debris, test floors, clear glass, and mark unsafe rooms. Brooklyn walked every shelter area before families entered. Benjamin organized a line of volunteers at the bus wrecks and repeated James's instructions louder, occasionally adding "the king said" until James threw a glove at him.
