Several days had passed. As a state employee, Alex had received his Hunter's salary from the Association. Now that his sister was unemployed, they could only rely on Alex to support the household.
Aside from that, Alex had already fully recovered from his previous battles, both physically and mentally.
His mother was still in a coma. The more he thought about it, the more impatient he became. According to the General, he needed Evolution Stars to bring her back.
And for that, he could not remain idle.
Alex was sitting in one of the Hunter Association's rooms when the door opened and a woman calmly entered.
Her golden hair fell over her shoulders, and her green eyes, marked by dark circles, observed the room for several seconds before settling on Alex.
Felicia Platinum Omega.
Alex had spoken with her before, when he had awakened in the Association's medical wing. She had also participated in the operation against Smoke at Felix's request.
On that occasion, Alex had discovered something peculiar about her.
Felicia's arms could transform into enormous cannons capable of firing an absurd amount of energy. It was a frighteningly destructive ability.
"You look much better."
Felicia's calm voice interrupted Alex's thoughts.
"Yes. I'm completely recovered."
Alex stood up.
"Felix told me to come see you."
"Affirmative. I asked him to send you to me."
Felicia approached the table and placed several documents on it.
"Our newly formed task force has received its first mission."
Alex looked at the documents.
"Such a quick mission?"
"Felix doesn't play around. The mission is specifically an investigation operation."
He picked up the first file. The name written on the cover immediately caught his attention.
"Galax Aiz."
Alex remained silent for several seconds, thinking.
He knew that name.
Galax Aiz was not a small organization. Anderson, his guild master, was known for having an ambitious and calculating personality, in addition to maintaining longstanding relations with the Weber family.
Alex continued reading.
"Why is the Association investigating Galax Aiz?"
Felicia remained silent for a moment.
"There are some irregularities related to the guild's operations."
"What kind of irregularities are we talking about?"
"Dungeon operations, the movement of certain resources, and information that reached us during previous investigations."
Alex frowned.
"Does this have anything to do with the corpse trafficking? Arnaldo, Joana, Felix, and I came across a dungeon involving this guild and corpse trafficking with a cryogenics industry?"
Felicia did not answer immediately.
That silence was enough for Alex to close the document.
"I understand."
The Association was not simply sending a team to supervise a guild. There was something behind this mission.
And Alex had already learned that whenever the Association concealed information, it usually meant the situation was more dangerous than it appeared.
"What is the team's composition for this mission?"
"You will be in operational command with your task force."
Alex raised his eyes.
"Me?"
"Yes."
Felicia answered naturally.
"I will be responsible for the mission before the Association. Therefore, formally, I am the leader. This is the role Felix arranged for me within your task force."
Alex thought for several seconds.
"A nominal leader?"
"Exactly. I will take administrative responsibility. You will make the decisions during operations."
That made sense to Alex. He did not consider himself an experienced commander. Fighting was one thing, but commanding other people was completely different.
During his previous missions, he had made important decisions, but he was usually focused on surviving and defeating his enemies, causing him to make decisions based on his own circumstances.
Now, he would also have to think about the people around him.
"Who will be on the team besides the task force?"
Felicia began listing the names.
"In total, the participants in the mission will be Monica."
Alex nodded.
"Mimi."
Another nod.
"Feliciana."
Alex looked at the documents again. The young mage would probably become nervous as soon as she discovered that she would be participating in an operation of such importance.
"John."
Alex let out a small sigh.
"That could be a problem."
Felicia raised an eyebrow.
"Why?"
"He has a habit of stealing things, and for some reason, Felix doesn't like him, even though I think he's quite loyal and friendly."
"Small things."
Alex corrected himself.
Felicia remained serious for several seconds.
"That doesn't seem like much of a threat. In any case, Felix approves of him, so I do too."
"There's one more person."
Alex raised his eyes.
"Arnaldo, the Sword Saint."
This time, Alex fell silent.
The Sword Saint would be participating in the mission.
That completely changed the team's level of security.
Arnaldo was one of the greatest fighters Alex knew and, despite his classification, was considered equivalent to a true high-level three-star Hunter.
Alex knew his strength, and he also knew his experience.
If Arnaldo was present, it meant that the Association considered this mission important.
"Does he know about the mission?"
"Yes. Felix has already informed him."
Felicia picked up another document.
"He will accompany the team during the first operation."
Alex nodded.
"When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow."
"Understood."
He looked at the file again.
There were several pages about Galax Aiz, but one piece of information caught his attention.
A list of new members who had joined the guild.
Alex scanned the names with his eyes.
Then he stopped.
His finger remained motionless over a single line.
Tiffany Weber.
For several seconds, Alex said nothing.
Felicia noticed the change in his expression through the facial analysis of her robotic eyes.
"Tiffany recently joined Galax Aiz."
Alex slowly closed his eyes.
Tiffany had decided to leave her family's guild.
The thought of seeing her name in that document still gave him a strange feeling.
Tiffany was a complicated matter for him.
In his original reality, she had been his girlfriend.
In this reality, however, things had taken a completely different path.
Alex knew that Tiffany was afraid of him, and therefore, it was not something he could simply ignore.
"How long ago did she join?"
"Recently."
Felicia turned another page.
"Another two-star Hunter also joined the guild the previous week."
Alex opened his eyes.
"Another? I thought two-star Hunters were rare, and the Association and guilds competed for them."
"Yes."
There was something strange about this coincidence.
Tiffany had just joined a guild that was already under investigation, and a second two-star Hunter had joined shortly before her.
And now the Association was sending a task force to supervise the same guild.
It did not seem like a coincidence.
"Is there anything else?"
Felicia looked at him.
"Yes."
She placed one final document on the table.
"Your group will also participate in a joint raid."
"A dungeon?"
"Yes."
Alex picked up the document.
The objective seemed simple: accompany a Galax Aiz team, observe their operations, and ensure that everything proceeded according to the Association's regulations.
But Alex did not believe it would be that simple.
After everything that had happened, he had learned to be suspicious of coincidences.
Felicia walked toward the door.
"Gather your team."
Alex put the documents away.
"I'll do that."
Before leaving, Felicia stopped.
"Alex."
He raised his eyes.
"Yes?"
"Don't try to solve everything alone."
Alex remained silent.
That sentence sounded familiar to him.
Arnaldo had said similar things before. He knew he had a habit of taking excessive risks, especially when someone important was in danger.
"I'll try."
Felicia looked at him for several seconds.
"No."
Alex frowned.
"No?"
"Don't try. You have a task force at your disposal. If you point north, no one will dare go south."
She opened the door and left.
Alex remained alone in the room.
For some reason, that woman always managed to make him feel as though he were being reprimanded without even raising her voice.
He let out a sigh.
"This team is going to be troublesome."
Part 2
Later, Alex found the other members.
Monica was the first to react when she heard about the mission. Her tanned skin remained as attractive as ever, and her breasts still caught Alex's attention.
"Finally, we'll be able to do something after all this time."
Mimi smiled.
"I was starting to think we'd be sitting around forever."
Feliciana held the documents with both hands.
"I... am I participating too?"
"Yes," Alex replied.
She swallowed nervously.
"But I'm still..."
"I know. Don't worry. You're a great mage."
Alex gently interrupted her.
"That's exactly why I want you to come."
Feliciana fell silent.
John appeared a few minutes later.
"I heard we're going on a mission."
Alex looked at him.
"Yes."
John smiled.
"I hope there's something interesting to borrow."
Monica crossed her arms.
Alex shook his head.
At least the team seemed functional.
That was good.
He opened the document again.
Galax Aiz and the dungeons.
And there was also Tiffany.
Corpse trafficking.
Artifacts.
There were too many pieces that still did not fit together.
Alex closed his eyes for a moment.
His goal remained the same.
Become stronger.
Obtain more Stars.
Save his mother.
Discover the whereabouts of his father in this reality.
If this mission gave him an opportunity to advance, he would not back down.
Alex stood up.
"Let's prepare properly. We leave tomorrow."
Everyone nodded in response.
None of them knew that this mission would change them, or how drastically their lives would change.
