Chapter 140: Chapter 140: You Can’t Take Anything
Lloyd hadn’t expected this, either. He never thought the infamous, most-wanted super-criminal—a man everyone was clamoring to kill—would show up in front of him so suddenly, separated only by the width of the highway.
If he’d had a choice, he would much rather be sound asleep at this hour than running out to the city outskirts in the middle of the night to face the terrifying Advisor.
Unfortunately, a decree he’d suddenly received during the day had left Lloyd with no choice.
Then, Lloyd felt a gaze and an inspiration lock firmly onto him, as if a viper had fixed its eyes on him. Even though he wasn’t being affected by any Extraordinary Abilities, his hands and feet turned ice-cold, and he couldn’t move a muscle.
An inexplicable killing intent surged within him—
He wanted to kill the other man...
It wasn’t for reasons like upholding justice or maintaining peace, nor was it for motives like murder for profit or to cover up secrets.
He simply wanted the other man to die. It was an almost instinctual urge.
"You’re younger than I imagined, and braver. But... you’re also weaker."
The Advisor offered his blunt assessment, his tone calm and composed, as if he had everything under control. He continued,
"Your talent is quite good. Come with me. Become my student, and I will grant you knowledge and power, as well as authority, status, and wealth beyond your wildest dreams."
"Heh. I take great pleasure in telling self-important fools ’no.’ Especially since I know exactly what kind of person you are."
Lloyd replied with a cold sneer, adding a silent curse in his mind:
’Just because my talent is good, I should go with you? Who do you think you are, Orochimaru?’
At the same time, he could sense it. Though his opponent was doing his best to suppress and conceal it, deep down, he felt the same way Lloyd did—he wished the other would just drop dead on the spot.
Lloyd instinctively slid his hand into his pocket and gripped the Saint Statue inside. It felt as warm and smooth as jade.
The Saint Statue’s strange material and texture made it feel as though he were holding a young woman’s hand...
"Heh heh. Many young men like you have refused me, but they all quickly came to regret it. They realize that everything they know—the systems, the power, even the high-and-mighty Saints—is nothing but an absurd joke."
The Advisor continued speaking, carefully studying the blurry face across from him, which seemed to be obscured by a layer of pixels.
He tried to touch it with his inspiration, wanting to see the young man’s true face.
But he failed. His inspiration made no contact; the man’s face was like an empty void.
This unique disguise must be the work of some kind of Holy Artifact.
His inspiration, however, had easily sized up the young man’s strength. He was only Tier Two, as weak as an ant.
And yet, he dared to show himself. He must be relying on more than just [Twist]...
At this thought, the Advisor turned his head and looked to the other side of the highway.
Just then, a gentle and refined voice drifted over from that direction:
"There’s no need to try and bewitch him. He is far more exceptional and resolute than you imagine."
Then, the Chief Judge’s figure slowly floated out from the shadows on the other side of the highway, and he continued,
"Eske Mir, you won’t be taking anything with you. Not even yourself."
"Heh heh. Tirtus, among all you cowards who grovel before mortal Saints, you’re one of the few who is actually qualified to stand before me... a pity it’s completely meaningless..."
The Advisor sneered. His gaze toward the Chief Judge flickered as he stealthily activated the power of [Curse].
But in the next second, his vision went completely black, and he couldn’t see a thing. A buzzing started in his ears, and he couldn’t hear anything at all.
Even the inspiration emanating from his body began to feel a burning pain, and it temporarily lost its bearings.
This was a common tactic of the [Wisdom] system: interfering with all of an opponent’s senses, including their inspiration and Spiritual Vision.
Immediately after, he felt the power of [Veto] fall upon him, forming invisible shackles that tried to imprison him.
And it almost succeeded...
But the binding effect lasted less than a second before the Advisor easily broke free.
"It seems you still fail to ’understand’ me, Tirtus."
The Advisor said with a cold smile, focusing his mind and mobilizing his true power to fight the mental interference.
It only took him a second for his sight and hearing to return.
He looked up just in time to see the Chief Judge darting and dodging in mid-air, desperately evading some kind of invisible force.
Only someone with active Spiritual Vision could see it: hidden under the cover of night were countless [Curses]. Like deadly, silent arrows, they moved stealthily through the dark, assailing the Chief Judge from every cunning and vicious angle, pushing him into a desperate corner.
Furthermore, each [Curse] was different—nausea, vertigo, cardiac arrest, organ failure, loss of control over Spiritual Power. Their strength varied, making it difficult for the Chief Judge to [Veto] them one by one.
And as the Chief Judge tired himself out dealing with these [Curses], he had no energy left to notice a [Calamity] quietly coalescing in the Space above his head.
The [Calamity] would manifest as an ’accident.’ Perhaps something small and simple—a sudden lapse in focus, an unexpected daze, or even a twisted ankle. Things that are difficult to guard against.
But it could trigger a ’butterfly effect’; due to one small accident, the Chief Judge might be caught by a [Curse]...
Perhaps the [Curse] and [Calamity] systems weren’t that powerful on their own and had numerous flaws. But when used in combination, they could unleash unimaginable combat prowess, completely suppressing the Chief Judge and seizing the upper hand.
And that was enough.
The Advisor had no intention of actually killing the Chief Judge. His target remained the young thief who had stolen the Book of Truth.
But the Advisor immediately noticed—the kid was gone.
He had completely disappeared from sight. Even his inspiration could no longer find him.
’Strange. Has Tirtus’s interference not been fully dispelled?’
The Advisor came to a conclusion: the thief had been hidden by the power of [Wisdom], making it so he ’could not see’ him.
After all, only three short seconds had passed between him losing his sight and recovering it...
In order to counteract the interference from [Wisdom] as quickly as possible, the Advisor had to focus more of his consciousness into the body, making it act more like his true self.
But he still couldn’t find any trace of the thief...
Instead, what he heard was a low shout from behind:
"In the name of Veto!"
The next second, a Two-Handed Heavy Sword came slicing through the air, aiming to cut the Advisor in two.
