Chapter 148: Chapter 148: A Warm Reunion
Lloyd put down his pen. The last thing he wrote down was his approval of the [Veto] system; he didn’t include his later thoughts and associations.
"This should be enough."
He nodded and put his notebook away.
Just then, he heard a knock on the door.
When he opened the door, he saw a dark spatial rift outside. A cardboard-like arm extended from it, handing him a letter written in the butler’s familiar, nigh-illegible scrawl.
"Thank you."
Lloyd took the letter and politely added.
The cardboard arm held up three fingers in an ’OK’ sign before retracting back into the spatial rift.
Lloyd returned to his office, scratching his head as he struggled to decipher the letter’s contents.
It basically said that it was safe now and Lloyd could go home. The same went for Evelor; she was safe, so there was no need to worry.
However, two days ago when Ms. Landis picked her up, the excuse given was that Lloyd was away on business. The letter was specifically to get their stories straight.
’Does the butler not know about the Advisor or the subsequent encirclement operation?’
Finally, the butler also left his current contact method—
Draw a specific pattern with Spiritual Ink of any quality, then channel Spiritual Power to tap it at a specific frequency. The pattern will change, and then you can just hand the letter to the arm that extends out.
’Seems pretty fun, huh?’
But Lloyd was more interested in that cardboard arm. ’Is it some kind of unique creature? I wonder if it’s something the butler used [Manifestation] to create?’
’When will I learn such a ’boss-level’ way of sending and receiving mail?’
Lloyd smiled and got up to go borrow some books from the library.
Although the Chief Judge had told him to get a good rest today, how could he possibly rest easy after witnessing last night’s battle?
’The Path of the Extraordinary allows for no slacking!’
However, in the afternoon, Lloyd left a little early.
He then took the ’subway’ to a department store near his home.
He hadn’t seen his sister for two days. It was the first time they’d been apart for so long since he’d transmigrated. He absolutely had to get her a little gift.
So, he first bought some desserts his sister loved. Then, spurred on by a saleswoman’s fawning recommendation, he bought a jade hairpin worth several hundred Universal Coins. It was shaped like a leaf, a vibrant green. While the material was average, the craftsmanship was quite good, giving it an artistic flair.
After getting the gift wrapped, Lloyd headed home from the department store. On the way, he happened to pass by the club, so he stopped in and asked the manager about ’Mizkakotok University’.
"Oh? Information on that place is as valuable as intel on the ’Dream Theater’. Are you asking for an inquiry, sir?"
"Help me keep an eye out for it."
"No problem. I am more than happy to serve a distinguished member such as yourself."
After leaving the club, Lloyd happened to pass by the old book market across the street. He saw the young painter who had sold him a painting before, now doing a portrait for a couple.
’Looks like he’s sold more of his paintings. That’s great.’
Lloyd hadn’t intended to disturb his business, but the painter spotted him first. He asked his clients to wait a moment, then quickly ran over and called out to Lloyd.
"Hello, sir. Do you remember me?"
"Of course. I already hung that painting you sold me in my office."
Lloyd nodded.
"That’s wonderful! Thank you for appreciating my work!"
The young painter broke into an excited smile and continued:
"It’s all thanks to your generosity before, which helped me get through a couple of very tough days. I’ve sold a few more paintings since then, so things are much better. If you don’t mind, I’d like to give you a painting for free. What kind of theme would you like?"
Lloyd didn’t stand on ceremony. He thought for a moment and replied:
"Knives, swords... that sort of thing? Cold weapons. It doesn’t need to be complex, just something simple and realistic would be great."
The decorative Command Saber that had been hanging on his office wall had been swiped by ’Big Brother’, the Grand Judge. The wall was now bare and needed something to fill the space.
To buy a blade of equivalent craftsmanship and quality, especially one with a Spiritual Blade effect, would cost six figures at a minimum. There was no way Lloyd was willing to waste that kind of money. Hanging a painting would have to do.
"Okay, no problem. But I don’t have any similar works on hand. Could you give me a couple of days? I’ll paint one for you as soon as I can."
"That’s fine, that’s fine. I’m not in a hurry. Don’t let it get in the way of your real creative work."
The two chatted for a bit more. The painter returned to his work, and Lloyd continued home. He passed by the vegetable market near his house and bought some fresh ingredients, planning to cook dinner himself tonight.
After creating a cacophony of CLANGS and BANGS in the kitchen that sounded like a blacksmith’s forge, he brought out four unique, masterfully crafted dishes—
Spicy fish head baked cake, onion and sour bamboo shoot stewed crab, cucumber stir-fried with potato, and eggplant and broccoli stewed with glass noodles.
Two meat dishes, two vegetable dishes. A perfectly balanced and harmonious meal.
As for the kitten’s dinner, it was just as lavish: cucumber peels, potato peels, and eggplant peels mixed with yogurt. He hoped it would help the little thing grow strong quickly.
And, as expected, Evelor came home early that evening.
The moment she walked in the door, she saw her younger brother waiting to greet her and the meal already laid out on the table. She immediately choked up, sniffling hard with her cute little nose.
Then she threw herself into Lloyd’s arms, rubbing her cheek against his chest.
Given their height difference, she had to stand on her tiptoes, her heels slipping free from her leather shoes. This revealed the smooth, round curve of her ankle wrapped in a white stocking, and a hint of the soft, pink flesh within.
"Sob... Yi..."
It seemed Evelor had a harder time with their two-day separation than Lloyd did.
After all, it was the first time they’d been apart for so long since they were children...
After nuzzling him for a while, Evelor looked up. Her cute face was still streaked with tears, but she wore a sweet, contented smile. She reached out with her small hands, cupped Lloyd’s face, and pulled him toward her.
Lloyd had no choice but to bend down, getting closer and closer to his sister’s cute, childlike face.
Evelor narrowed her eyes, her lips slightly parted, revealing an exceptionally charming expression as she also drew nearer to her brother’s handsome face.
Then, she firmly pressed her forehead against Lloyd’s and rubbed it, reliving an intimate gesture from their childhood.
But it went no further than that. The siblings soon separated, both of them laughing.
After a heartwarming dinner, the two siblings squeezed onto the sofa, each holding a box.
In Evelor’s box was the new jade hairpin Lloyd had bought; in Lloyd’s box was an exquisite tie clip Evelor had bought for him.
Once again, the siblings had been on the same wavelength, each preparing a small gift for the other.
Evelor couldn’t put the jade hairpin down, toying with it lovingly. She sat in a w-sit, her legs in their white stockings exposed below her skirt. Their milky-white, delicate texture kept inadvertently drawing Lloyd’s gaze.
"It’s so beautiful! Thank you, Yi. Can you help me put it on?"
she suddenly pleaded.
"Of course."
Lloyd took the hairpin from his sister and clipped it in her hair, just above the right side of her forehead.
"Hee hee, do I look pretty?"
Evelor asked in a low voice, narrowing her eyes again into that mature, charming smile, which created a unique and beautiful contrast with her youthful appearance.
"You do. You’re the prettiest."
Lloyd nodded emphatically.
Evelor immediately puffed up with pride and replied:
"Mhm~ And my Yi is the most handsome. So, on your business trip this time, did any girls come up and talk to you?"
’My sister seems really concerned about this,’ Lloyd thought. ’She’s always asking if I’ve met any girls or if any have hit on me. She probably hopes I’ll get married and start a family soon, right?’
But Lloyd chose to deny it most of the time, and this time was no exception.
"It was all just trivial business matters, and I’m supposed to keep it confidential... By the way, how are things with your magazine, sis?"
Evelor’s slender brows furrowed. The childlike air around her vanished in an instant as she switched into ’editor-in-chief’ mode, looking a bit worried.
"Same as always. Sales are decent, I guess? Most of the reader letters are encouraging, too. But I still don’t dare to print too many copies, and no more bookstores or newsstands are willing to place orders, so it’s hard to increase sales...
I mentioned this to Miss Desda two days ago. She just said to increase investment and publicity, and she was about to write a check right then and there. But I refused. I don’t want to owe her any more than I already do. I want to solve this myself."
Lloyd nodded and replied:
"True, Miss Desda has already helped us a lot... By the way, how has she been lately?"
"She’s a tourism and real estate consultant now. She wants to ride the wave of the great expansion to develop some tourism business."
Evelor replied, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
"Tourism and real estate... Forget it. It doesn’t matter, she won’t stick with it for long anyway."
Lloyd said, then changed the subject with a suggestion:
"If you need money for the magazine, sis, how about I help you out with some?"
"Eh? No, no!"
Evelor waved her small hands so fast they almost left afterimages.
"I heard Ms. Landis mention it—Extraordinary Beings are always short on cash, right? I even saw her worrying about bills these past two days. So, I should be the one supporting you, Yi. It’s just that the magazine is just starting out, and the profits aren’t quite enough yet..."
"It’s okay, sis. Don’t worry about me. I can earn my own money."
"Hee hee, then you don’t have to worry about me either, Yi. I’ll work hard to earn money, too."
The siblings spoke at the same time, then laughed together.
"Oh, right! Yi, I have a few new stories planned for next month’s issue. Want to take a look?"
"Sure."
Evelor then took a few manuscript pages from her shoulder bag and handed them to Lloyd.
He didn’t expect that the very first title would instantly grab his attention.
