Chapter 63: Chapter 63: A Tough Nut to Crack
Lloyd actually didn’t mind his sister working as Miss Desda’s assistant.
Although she’d inevitably be ordered around and the pay wasn’t great, their relationship was excellent. She definitely wouldn’t be bullied, and she’d always get a share of the fine food and drink.
Besides, with the butler—a High Position powerhouse—around, her safety was completely guaranteed.
It was still a bit of a shame for his sister and Miss Desda to part ways...
But on second thought, Lloyd decided it wasn’t a bad thing.
Whether it was his sister or Miss Desda, they would both have to get married eventually. No matter how close they were, they couldn’t stay together forever.
Besides, his sister was beautiful, cute, gentle, kind, patient, meticulous, cheerful, generous, resilient, hard-working, intelligent, virtuous, and a thrifty homemaker. She was full of outstanding qualities; being just an assistant was a waste of her talents.
It would be great for her to become independent and stand on her own two feet.
’As for her safety, I’ll handle that. Of course I have to protect my own sister; I can’t always rely on others.’
’But still... that editor-in-chief position at a folklore magazine sounds a little worrisome...’
’My sister won’t start losing her hair, will she? She won’t get bullied by unreasonable readers, will she? She won’t face workplace bullying, will she?’
The more Lloyd thought about it, the more worried he became...
Not until Evelor leaned in and pinched his cheek with her small hand.
"Yi? What’s wrong?"
Lloyd snapped out of it, smiled, and explained,
"It’s nothing. I was just worried that being an editor-in-chief would be a lot of hard work."
"Hee hee, don’t worry about me. Have you forgotten? I’ve been a bundle of energy ever since I was little. I used to drive Mom and Dad crazy, making them regret ever picking me up."
"How could that be? Impossible. You’ve always been Mom and Dad’s pride."
"Mmm... I know. And you are, too. You’re Mom and Dad’s pride as well..."
Evelor said, her eyes meeting Lloyd’s. Then, they both burst out laughing.
"Mom and Dad would be so happy for us now."
"Yeah!"
...
That night, Lloyd leaned against his headboard before bed, using the powerhouse’s journal he had just acquired as his bedtime reading.
After a cursory skim, he couldn’t help but feel a little regret...
’Why am I reading this so late at night?’
It wasn’t that the journal was worthless. On the contrary, it was incredibly valuable and packed with substance.
If the journal from the Chief Judge was like a textbook—concise, easy to understand, systematic, with precise wording and elegant handwriting—
...then the butler’s journal was very much a set of *personal notes*.
While it was full of practical, substantive information, it was also a complete mess. It was completely unsystematic, as if he simply wrote down whatever he encountered or jotted down a line whenever a thought struck him. It hadn’t been organized at all, and just looking at it gave Lloyd a headache.
The handwriting was the worst part—so sloppy it was horrifying. It was filled with countless annotations and corrections. Judging by the ink, many notes had been added just in the last few days. Large and small characters were crammed together in dense clumps, making Lloyd’s eyes ache.
As for the actual content, it was mainly a collection of Randolph’s combat records, observations, and insights from his youth—
It was all about fighting Extraordinary Beings, or watching others fight Extraordinary Beings. There wasn’t a single mention of him fighting a Demon.
His notes covered not only the six legal systems but also his experiences fighting against Taboo Systems like[Suffering], [Curse], and [Calamity]. He analyzed their weaknesses, common tactics, countermeasures, things to watch out for, and so on.
’But there’s nothing on the [Twist] system. I guess he never encountered it in his youth?’
Of all these systems, the one the butler rated the highest—and considered the most troublesome—was the [Veto] system. He’d apparently never won a fight against it, always ending up fleeing for his life.
His evaluation was:
"How can such an unreasonable system even exist?"
The weakest, in his opinion, was the Eternal City’s [Redemption] system. He considered them completely unsuitable for combat and wrote that he’d be embarrassed to even make a move on them.
As for the Taboo Systems, he dismissed them as treacherous, second-rate cowards, viewing them with utter disdain. He believed they could never face an Extraordinary Being from a proper system in a head-on confrontation and were destined to be eradicated.
He even commented:
"A bunch of spineless losers."
He also didn’t think much of modern weapons like firearms, remarking, ’Are these some new kind of slingshot for kids?’
Instead, he held outdated skills like Swordsmanship in high regard, believing, ’This is what a real man should master!’
All in all, while the journal was a tough read and the experience was terrible, its content was undeniably valuable. It would just take some time to digest it all.
However, the entire journal was about fighting other people, making Lloyd wonder what exactly the butler did in his youth.
’Perhaps he had a role similar to a Hunter from the Saint’s Grace Court?’
’His current position as a butler in a wealthy household, despite being a Tier Seven powerhouse, must be related to his past, right?’
Lloyd mulled it over briefly but didn’t dwell on it. It was best not to pry into the affairs of a High Position powerhouse.
Still, the emotions bleeding through the text painted a picture of the butler in his youth: arrogant in his talent, high-spirited, and possessed of a burning hatred for evil. He was the type who would never feign modesty when it was time to show off, and who would show absolutely no mercy when dealing with criminals.
"Looks like the butler was a passionate, righteous young man in his youth... just like me."
Lloyd muttered to himself.
’Maybe when the butler looks at me, he sees his younger self?’
The butler of today, however, was humble, low-key, and impeccably polite—a stark contrast to the persona in the journal. It was like they were two different people.
’He must have lost something very important to have changed so much, right?’
With that thought, Lloyd put down the journal. He then called up his panel to deal with another matter.
Although he hadn’t managed to get a single point of Madness Value from the butler’s "Story" earlier, his efforts weren’t entirely fruitless. He had acquired a strange item—
[Ding! Unknown Fragment of uncertain composition acquired. Attempt to analyze?]
Lloyd had been busy with other things earlier and had put the matter aside. Looking at it again now, he was filled with questions.
’Can someone please translate for me what an "Unknown Fragment of uncertain composition" is? It really doesn’t sound like anything good.’
He hesitated for a moment but decided to see what this thing was really made of.
But first, he needed to take some precautions.
So, he reached over and roughly jostled the little kitten that was curled up asleep by his pillow, waking it up.
"MROW?"
"Keep an eye on me. If you see me suddenly pass out, remember to bite me. Hard. Really hard."
After giving his instructions, Lloyd had the panel begin the analysis.
