Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Scored a Pity Pull
[Ding~ Analysis initiated. Current Cognition: 60]
[Analysis in progress. Current progress: 1%, 2%, 3%...]
Lloyd listened to the prompts in his ear, waiting patiently.
But after only two or three minutes, his mind suddenly buzzed, followed by a sharp, stabbing pain that made him wince.
[Ding~ Insufficient Cognition. Analysis forcibly paused. Increase Cognition to resume analysis.]
[Ding~ Madness Value +2000]
’Hiss... That can happen?’
Lloyd scratched his head, trying to ease the pain. He checked his memories to see if anything new had been added.
He found nothing. Instead, a slight pain pricked his arm.
Looking down, he saw the little kitten diligently gnawing on his forearm...
’Is it being a loyal protector, or is it looking for a chance at payback?’
"Alright, I’m fine."
Lloyd picked up the kitten, held it to his cheek, and nuzzled it vigorously before placing it back beside his pillow.
Then he went back to observing the changes on his panel.
[User: Lloyd]
[Status: Normal]
[Madness Value: 2233/2500, Limit: 6500]
[Rationality: 65]
[Spiritual Power: 65]
[Inspiration: 40]
[Cognition: 60]
[System: Twist LV2, Veto LV1]
[Mastered Skills: High-Efficient Learning; Probe; Divination LV3; Dizziness Resistance LV4; Precise Dissection LV4; Twisted Realm LV3; Swordsmanship LV4; Aggressive Speech LV2; Orbital Control LV1]
[Unparsed Fragment: Unknown Fragment of indeterminable composition*1, Current analysis progress: 6%]
Lloyd scratched his head again as he looked at the new line of text at the bottom.
It was a good thing that this ’Unknown Fragment of indeterminable composition’ hadn’t disappeared after the failed analysis. It meant he could continue later.
’Looks like the panel is pretty generous. It’s not like those double-crit Holy Relics in games that you can only feed to the dogs after a failed enhancement.’
But weren’t its requirements for [Cognition] a bit too high?
Sixty points of [Cognition] only got it to 6%. Did that mean he would need something like 1000 points to finish the analysis?
’If I really had that many points, wouldn’t it be better to put them all into [Rationality] and [Spiritual Power]?’
However, a failed analysis did give some Madness Value as a consolation prize. So, maybe he could...
Lloyd quickly tried to start the analysis again.
The panel prompted him to try again in three days.
’This isn’t bad either,’ he thought. ’It’s another way to gain Madness Value, and the amount is pretty substantial. If I keep at it, I should be able to level up steadily every three days.’
In that case, after 60 days, he’d have at least 20 opportunities to allocate points. His well-rounded stats would get another big boost.
’Heh~ I still got a consolation prize. Not bad, not bad at all.’
Lloyd was quite satisfied, feeling a bit more confident.
’If I want to earn the reward and favor of a Tier Seven powerhouse, I need to work harder and push the panel out of its comfort zone.’
...
Meanwhile, in an exquisite and magnificent villa in the wealthy district, Miss Desda’s eyes were red as she wiped away her tears, choking back sobs.
"Sob... Uncle Randolph... Do you really have to go?"
Before her was a desk larger than a bed. The various items that were once scattered across it in disarray had been neatly arranged. In the very center sat a white envelope containing the butler’s letter of resignation.
"I’m very sorry, Miss... but this is a path every Extraordinary Being must walk."
Randolph’s face was also filled with sorrow and reluctance. He had been by the young lady’s side since she had just learned to walk, watching her grow up bit by bit. In his heart, he had long since come to see her as his own daughter.
"Sob... But... I’ve been with you since I was a child. I really can’t bear for you to leave... Sob..."
Desda sniffled hard, and with a rare display of her usual bratty and willful nature, she continued:
"I can go beg my father and my brothers! They all know lots of Extraordinary Being friends. They can definitely help you find another way!"
But the butler just smiled bitterly and shook his head.
Unwilling to give up, Desda pressed on:
"Then what about me after you leave? What if bad guys try to bully me? What am I supposed to do if I’m in danger?"
"You needn’t worry about that, Miss. The security Advisor, Ms. Landis, will take over my duties and serve as your personal bodyguard. She is an orthodox Extraordinary Being from the Radiant Sect, powerful and experienced... Besides, there’s also Lloyd..."
The moment the butler mentioned Lloyd, the expression on his face relaxed slightly, and he continued:
"Lloyd is a genius with immense potential, held in high regard by the Holy Judgment Court. He is destined to become a great figure who can stand on his own. Moreover, he is a person who values relationships and cares deeply about your safety. He is worthy of your trust and reliance..."
But he immediately added a heartfelt warning:
"But please, you must be careful. Take this as my final piece of advice: do not develop any feelings for him beyond friendship. He has already embarked on the Path of the Extraordinary and will inevitably face the same situation as I do in the future. He is not a suitable partner for you."
"Sob... I know. That guy... he was already so mature and cunning when we were just kids!"
The butler’s words triggered a memory for Desda, and she went on:
"I still remember the first time I saw him. He was filthy, full of sweet talk, trying to trick me into buying all the flowers he was selling. He even claimed it was the best price, but it turned out to be more expensive than the flower shop..."
"I was about to teach him a harsh lesson, but then I found out he only scammed me to help Evelor make fewer matchboxes. So I forgave him. I even wanted to give him more money, but in the end, it was you, Uncle Randolph, who reminded me that giving him a job would be better than giving him money."
The butler nodded, his voice filled with the weariness of time as he lamented:
"Yes, but I never expected Miss Evelor to be the one who came. I certainly never thought that such a small act of kindness back then would have such a significant impact on the future... Perhaps this is the [Destiny] of an Extraordinary Being?"
...
The next day, Lloyd returned to his usual routine, seemingly unaffected by the previous night’s events.
When he arrived at the Eighteenth District and stepped out of the ’subway’ tunnel, he once again saw the beautiful and enchanting figure of Weiya.
’What a coincidence to run into her again.’
Lloyd didn’t think much of it and approached her, offering a casual greeting.
Unexpectedly, it was Weiya who seemed a bit unnatural. She nervously pulled a few pages of manuscript from her pocket and handed them back to Lloyd.
"I read the story on these pages last night. It was truly wonderful..."
As she spoke, she turned her head slightly, her gaze shifting away. She lowered her voice and said softly:
"I believe that we, in the future... will be just like in the story."
"Huh?"
Lloyd didn’t quite understand what she meant and asked in confusion:
"How could that be? With our strength, if we really encountered something like that, we would have slaughtered our way through the whole thing long ago."
A complicated look flashed through Weiya’s beautiful eyes. She replied in an all-business tone:
"Yes, you’re right."
