Chapter 99: Chapter 99: First to be Eliminated
Lloyd had indeed taken a ’shot,’ and it had indeed hurt.
The Spiritual Power that had sprayed from the muzzle penetrated his skin, collided with the Spiritual Power inside his body, and then... vanished.
points in [Spiritual Power] is no joke.
’But it still hurt! About as much as a shock from static electricity!’
However, taking that shot was what made Lloyd truly understand the rules of this game.
This wasn’t some game of luck. It was a player-versus-player battle that required eight players to use their own abilities to influence the toy gun from their seats, all to eliminate the others one by one.
’A relatively elegant form of ’PvP’, I suppose?’
At that moment, Player 7 spoke again.
"I have no personal grudge against you. It’s just the rules of the game."
Lloyd smiled but didn’t reply.
’You might not have a personal grudge against me...’
’But what if I have one against you?’
Lloyd thought to himself as he activated [Inspect] again, glancing at the Attributes of the players present.
The skill activated successfully, but everyone’s Attributes were displayed as ’■■’. ’It seems the skill’s effect is being interfered with by some kind of power. Could it be the mist covering everyone’s faces?’
As he was pondering this, the small figure in the middle of the table began to dance and spin again.
"It looks like today’s game will be an exciting one. Good. I like it."
Player 5, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke. He then interlocked the fingers of both hands and brought them to his mouth.
A surge of Spiritual Power immediately emanated from him and settled onto the toy figure.
This power was completely different from the one Player 7 had used earlier. It was stronger and more sinister.
But he didn’t use this power to influence the figure’s spin. It seemed he was merely adding a bit of gunpowder to the ’bullet’ in the toy gun.
Player 6, sitting right beside him, recognized the nature of this power and turned to ask:
"[Suffering]? You’re a bold one, playing a trump card right from the start. Aren’t you afraid we’ll all gang up on you?"
"Heh heh... You’re welcome to try."
Player 5 replied with a cold laugh.
"Hmph! Then we’ll see about that."
Player 2, sitting diagonally across from Lloyd, spoke coldly. He raised his right hand, clenched it into a fist, and muttered a few words under his breath.
Another surge of Spiritual Power gushed from his body and into the toy gun.
Player 6 quickly took on the role of a diligent narrator, explaining:
"[Redemption]? I never thought someone from the Eternal City would participate in this game."
As he spoke, he looked toward the other people present and asked:
"What about the rest of you?"
"There’s no need to go so big on the first round, is there?"
Player 3 seemed to be trying to play peacemaker, but a stream of power quietly emanated from his body and gathered in the toy gun.
Player 4, however, retorted:
"Why not? There’s nothing wrong with speeding up the game’s pace. After all, everyone’s time is precious, and we all desperately need those tempting prizes."
As he spoke, another stream of power was injected into the toy gun.
Seeing this, Player 6 quickly waved his hands.
"[Curse] and [Manifestation] too? You guys are playing for keeps, huh? Well, I’m staying out of this one."
Player 1 chimed in:
"Indeed, it’s unnecessary now. With the power of four different systems gathered, no one here can block this shot. If they could, they wouldn’t need to be here playing with us. Someone is bound to be eliminated."
Lloyd had been watching silently from the sidelines, and at the same time, he quietly activated his [Twist] system.
’This seems to be some kind of lawless place. If outlaws from the [Suffering] and [Curse] systems can act so brazenly, then there’s no need for an ’outlaw’ like me to hold back either.’
He also made a mental note of the other players’ affiliations.
Player 2 was from the [Redemption] system, Player 3 from the [Curse] system, Player 4 from [Manifestation], and Player 5 from [Suffering].
But he merely noted this down. He had no intention of forming factions to create some kind of ’Justice League’, nor would he go soft because of it.
In a lawless place like this, surrounded by people whose faces and backgrounds were unknown, the only person he could trust was himself.
People who chose a Legal System weren’t necessarily good people; they might even be worse.
Lloyd had read about several villains in the butler’s journal who had chosen a Legal System but still engaged in illegal dealings.
What did intrigue him, however, were the toy figure and the toy gun in its hand. It was magical how they could bear the power of four different systems simultaneously without being affected.
’Maybe I should raise the stakes a bit later, too?’
As he was thinking, the toy figure’s spinning gradually slowed, and the atmosphere grew tense and heavy.
No one was talking anymore. Everyone was staring intently at the toy gun, poised and ready to act.
No one wanted to be on the receiving end of a shot like that.
Meanwhile, Player 7, sitting next to Lloyd, was keeping an eye on the toy gun while secretly glancing at Lloyd’s reaction.
’This guy is probably thinking of pulling the same trick again.’
Coincidentally, Lloyd was also watching him.
And he acted first, activating [Twisted Realm].
Another two seconds passed. The figure’s spinning had almost stopped. The muzzle had just swept past Player 7’s chest and was slowly pointing toward Player 8’s position.
Seeing this, Player 7 acted again, giving it a gentle nudge with his Spiritual Power.
BANG!
The gun fired. A blast of Spiritual Power, infused with the might of four different systems, struck Player 8 in the chest.
"AHHH!!!"
He let out a bloodcurdling scream as his body shattered with a BOOM, turning into a pile of blood and gore that splattered everywhere.
Seeing that the dangerous shot had finally hit someone else, Player 6, the temporary narrator, swallowed his heart back down from his throat. He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and said:
"Phew... Thank god it wasn’t me. But that newcomer is really unlucky, getting picked twice in a row..."
Player 5 next to him chimed in with a cold laugh:
"Heh heh, a pity he couldn’t take it this time. What a miserable death."
"Hmph! Too bad it didn’t hit you... Continue!"
Player 2 said, clearly annoyed. He seemed to have a personal vendetta against Player 5 and once again injected power into the toy gun.
Player 5 also let out a cold snort, not to be outdone, and raised the stakes.
Seeing this, the remaining players were intimidated. Aside from Player 3, who secretly continued to interfere, everyone else chose to lie low.
And so, the toy figure began to spin again.
This time, the muzzle stopped while pointing at Player 3.
He was startled and quickly tried to imitate Player 7’s trick, giving the gun a nudge with his Spiritual Power.
But the seemingly light toy gun was like a block of lead, completely unresponsive.
’How could this be?’
Player 3 was shocked. He quickly raised his hands to protect his chest, intending to tank the shot.
But his hands grasped at empty air...
His chest, at some unknown point, had already become completely empty.
