’Shit this is awkward. She hasn’t answered and I look like a total idiot in front of all these people. How do they not have coffee?!’

"Um, sure. I suppose we could go there. Is this your first year? I’ve lived in Vespa my whole life and always dreamed of coming here."

"Yes, it’s my first year! What kind of magic do you use?"

"Oh me? I was born a mage. How about you?"

’System, is there a way to check how powerful she is?’

[You have not unlocked the skill insight.]

’Damn.’

"I’m a summoner I just found out yesterday."

"You must have really hit your head hard. Let’s get you to the medical wing." Sophie said, concerned.

"The system warned you people would think you were insane. How can you fail so hard at women when you’re so good looking and in your first life you allegedly had a long term girlfriend," Ash laughed.

"Hey! I did! It’s not my fault this world is so weird."

"It’s not the world buddy."

"No, please let’s just head for the lounge. I’ll tell you more on the way."

Tyler tried explaining he learned he was a summoner recently and was invited to the academy last minute because of his mythological familiar, Ash. He explained he was home schooled but his parents passed away over the summer. He could tell she wasn’t buying it, but did his best to make sure she was comfortable and just told her not to worry about it.

The two finally got to the lounge which was pretty empty, which surprised him.

"Tyler, please grab us a table and I’ll get you a potion," Sophie said with a small smile.

"Yeah, sure, no problem."

"Well, I guess I won’t be telling anyone else that I found out I was a summoner recently. People are going to mock me for being D rank though, like that older student in the courtyard. What should I do?"

"Work hard, that’s all you can do. Weren’t you some football superstar or something? What the heck is football?"

"Not important. I’m going to have to rely on you and the system for now. You’re right, I need to make some friends. Sophie seems nice, let’s start there."

"Praise the gods! I might have an actual host for once in my wretched life!" Ash laughed.

Tyler was really grateful to have such a funny familiar. It made adjusting to life on this new planet significantly easier, even if it seemed pretty similar to Earth. He couldn’t imagine doing it alone, even with the system.

Sophie returned with two glasses, one filled with water and another filled with a thick red substance with an amazing aroma.

’Woah this smells so good.’

"Well, drink up!" Sophie said while taking a sip of her glass of water.

Tyler downed the potion in one gulp and immediately felt better.

[Health has returned to 50/50 HP.]

’Woah, thanks system! What should I talk to her about?’

[I would recommend focusing on her and keeping the conversation not too personal.]

"So, what rank are you, if you don’t mind me asking?"

"B! I was pretty proud of myself when I hit it after graduating high school this past summer. My parents put a lot of pressure on me..."

"Really? That’s a shame. I think it’s awesome that you hit B rank! My parents were always so supportive. I miss them, ya know, but I try to just think of all the great times we had and cherish those." Tyler said, a tear slightly forming in his eye. He wiped it away and laughed.

"Look at me getting all emotional, sorry! What about you though... I’m so sorry I ran into you like that! Your healing magic was really impressive. I’m only D ranked and I have a phoenix so I’m worried people are going to get on me about that."

"Everyone has to start somewhere. It’s not like your rank F or anything. Plus like you said, you were home schooled so it’s not like you had a formal education in magical training or anything and there aren’t many summoners out there! You just need to make some beast taming friends that can help you out."

Tyler smiled. "Yeah, plus, if you don’t mind, do you think you could help me out with this place? You said you’re from Vespa, so it’d be nice to know someone who is familiar with everything around here. Only if you’re up for it–no pressure, I appreciate you bringing me to get a potion, I guess I did hit my head harder than I thought."

She laughed a little. "I suppose I could help you out. What is your schedule like anyway? Who is your homeroom teacher?"

"System, what’s my schedule and who is my homeroom teacher?"

[Homeroom teacher: Mr. Ethan Vanhorn - Elf. Classes as follows:

Period 1: Ability Use - Practical

Period 2: Beast Theory

Homeroom

Period 3: Dualing

Period 4: Strategic Combat - Theory

Period 5: Mana, Energy and Meditation

Period 6 - Beast Taming - Practical

Students are encouraged to join different clubs and practice their abilities in their free time. A formal duel can be challenged at any time by using the school’s main web interface, located throughout the building. For more information, please see a kiosk at Ability Academy]

Tyler explained his schedule and Sophie was surprised they shared a homeroom teacher. There were thousands of students in each class, year 1, 2 and 3, and only around 30 per homeroom.

"Ha, funny. It’s almost like I ran into you for some big reason," Tyler tried joking.

"Yeah, sure." Sophie said while shaking her head.

"Nice going dumbass." Ash teased.

"I’m trying man! She’s got a ton of walls up... I wonder if it has to do with all that pressure her parents put on her."

"Well, at least you aren’t completely brain dead. I find it interesting you share your first 5 classes together as well. Ask her what her last class is!"

"Thanks Ash."

"Sorry... bad joke. What is your last class anyway? I’m guessing it has something to do with your mage abilities."

She smiled, "Yes, it does. Not too bad for someone who was home schooled. Well, I’m going to head out, I’m meeting up with some of my friends tonight. It was nice meeting you."

"Yeah... it was nice meeting you too. I guess I’ll see you around?"

"Yeah, I think that’d be nice," she said as she politely waved and walked away.

’Damn, I didn’t even ask her for her number or anything.’ Tyler thought, sitting alone.

"Hey Tyler, check it out. There’s a group of guys your age walking in right now. One of them has a familiar!"
