Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Earth Ranking Expert

"Doesn’t this situation affect the agency’s reputation at all? Do you guys do any PR?" Zhang Zhe asked curiously.

He’d paid some attention when he stepped out during the day. From what he saw just by going to get some water, the Zhuyin Marriage Agency’s primary clientele was still women.

In fact, the entire matchmaking market was the same.

In terms of sheer numbers, there were indeed more single young men. However, the ones who were truly active in the dating market—or rather, willing to spend money on matchmaking—were still predominantly women.

At the Zhuyin Marriage Agency, this ratio reached an astonishing 1-to-18.

If clients were distributed proportionally, every single male client could be matched with eighteen female clients.

With such a disparity, wouldn’t a Matchmaker being called out for "pandering to men" deal a devastating blow to the business?

"It does have a bit of an impact," Boss He said, sharing her experience in a serious tone. "In the beginning, people would often be in the middle of a conversation and then suddenly ask me, ’Aunt He, are you that heartless Matchmaker they’re talking about on Xiaohongshu?’"

"I was a little embarrassed at first."

"I’d admit, ’Yes, that’s me, but I do have a conscience.’"

"But over time, I discovered something. For women who genuinely want to find a partner, when they find out I’ve been targeted by those ’little fairy’ types online, their first reaction is, surprisingly, ’Her agency must have great resources.’"

"And the men who come for matchmaking? As soon as they learn what happened to me, they trust me completely."

"If I really run into someone who treats Xiaohongshu like the bible, I just don’t bother taking her money. Sometimes I’ll even give her a free consultation, just so she’ll go stir up the rankings for me on Xiaohongshu."

Boss He’s words made Zhang Zhe want to shout, ’Holy shit!’

’It could actually have such an unexpected effect?’

Putting himself in the shoes of the male clients, he could understand their choice.

If someone was swarmed by those ’little fairy’ types just for telling the truth, then following the principle of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," you’d have to show some support, even if you were broke.

But for those women to actually think a Matchmaker like that would have good resources? That was something Zhang Zhe hadn’t expected.

The crazy part was, they were right.

Boss He told Zhang Zhe that the Zhuyin Marriage Agency hosted a high-end matchmaking event where the minimum asset requirement for men was 50 million, and they had to show proof of assets to get in.

And every single one of these events was packed. Men had to get on a waiting list just to attend.

You can imagine how rich the pool of resources really was.

For a female client looking to land a rich man, it was practically paradise.

"None of the Matchmakers here see getting on the bounty list as a big problem. The scariest thing for a Matchmaker isn’t being hated, it’s being a nobody."

"But for someone like you, Xiaozhang, to get on the list on your very first day... that’s a rare talent."

"Haha." Zhang Zhe gave an embarrassed laugh. "It’s not talent. I just like to tell the truth, and the truth usually isn’t what people want to hear. Then they get triggered."

"It’s fine, it’s fine. Just do things at your own pace."

"I just have one rule for you."

"Which is?" Zhang Zhe wanted to hear what this old lady had been building up to for so long.

"You, from now on, when you’re rating women’s appearances on your livestream, you must never, ever give a score of one."

"I know it can be difficult. Some of the heavier girls are, frankly, uglier than Sister Feng. But we’ve had a case where someone sued us because the score was too low."

"The lawsuit is still ongoing."

"Thanks for the heads-up, Boss." Zhang Zhe nodded, taking the advice to heart. ’Sure enough, behind every unwritten rule in an industry is a painful lesson learned the hard way.’

For a Matchmaker, time is money. Finding a partner requires constant trial and error for both parties, which means the Matchmaker naturally has to waste time right along with them.

Getting tied up in a defamation lawsuit at a time like that would be a huge loss.

Behind Boss He’s warning, Zhang Zhe felt he understood the subtext:

’Why did the old lady only say not to give low scores?’

’Because a score of one could actually get them sued for ’defamation’.’

’But that also meant as long as he didn’t give an insulting score, he could say whatever else he wanted. The agency could take the heat.’

An expression of sudden understanding dawned on Zhang Zhe’s face.

Boss He looked on, very pleased.

She immediately added Zhang Zhe to the agency’s Matchmaker group chat and even tagged everyone to announce his identity:

"Everyone, from now on, Xiaozhang will be our agency’s internet operations manager."

"He’ll be in charge of all our livestreaming and video posts."

"He’s also running his own matchmaking livestream right now, so when you have time, feel free to drop by his channel to show some support and offer suggestions."

At first, Zhang Zhe thought it was just an ordinary Matchmaker group chat.

But as soon as the group members started typing, he realized something was off:

[Xiaofan (Earth-rank #23)]: Zhang Zhe? Are you the Zhang Zhe from Xianghu District? Is your mom’s last name Wang?

[Shi Chenlu (Heaven-rank #77)]: Xiaozhang is really something, huh? Making it onto the Earth-rank on his first day as an intern. Looks like Sister He found the right guy.

[Lan Zhi (Trying to make the rankings)]: Welcome, welcome! I’m new too. Let’s all chat more in the future.

[Wei Qi (Earth-rank #88)]: I can’t believe a newbie has already caught up to my rank. Suddenly I feel the pressure.

Zhang Zhe wasn’t surprised that someone recognized him. His mother and her circle of friends were incredibly resourceful. A man his age who was still unmarried had surely been pitched as a potential match hundreds of times already.

What surprised him was how the people in this group had divided the bounty list into a "Heaven-rank" and an "Earth-rank," like it was some kind of cultivation chat group.

He opened the member list. Of the fifty or so people in the group, half of them were on the rankings.

The rest were either trying to make the rankings or were liaisons for government and public institutions, so they didn’t need the online notoriety to become famous.

If Zhang Zhe were one of those ’little fairy’ types, he would have reported this group immediately. ’They all deserve to be taken down, every last one of them.’

But he wasn’t.

He posted a few humble messages in the chat and collected the "newcomer red packets" of digital cash everyone sent. With that, Zhang Zhe had finally completed his initiation.

Besides the hundred-or-so yuan he collected from the red packets, his biggest gain was the promises from the other group members.

They all promised to help promote his livestream channel.

The first one to recognize him, a woman named Xiaofan, even promised to help find a suitable match for him and send her to his livestream for a blind date.

Zhang Zhe thought back to his old jobs in Shencheng City. Every time he started, HR would just give a simple introduction in the group chat, and everyone would just copy and paste some generic welcome messages.

In comparison, the matchmaking agency’s group chat felt much more personal.

It probably had something to do with the nature of their work. Matchmaking was a job for social butterflies, so of course their group chat wouldn’t be dead.

...

When he got home, Mrs. Zhang was already cooking dinner.

Seeing Zhang Zhe walk in, she immediately called out, "You finally decided to grace us with your presence! I was just about to call and look for you."

"Hurry up and take a shower. After dinner, I’m taking you out on a blind date. This one’s a sure thing—I found your high school Bai Yueguang for you."

’Bai Yueguang?’

Zhang Zhe was in the entryway changing his shoes. When he heard that, he froze, his hand pressed against the wall for support.

"What’s wrong? Struck dumb with joy?" Mrs. Zhang grinned smugly, feeling she had her son’s desires figured out completely.

"No, Mom, do you even know who my Bai Yueguang is?" Zhang Zhe said, shaking his head as he continued to change his shoes. "I’m not going. I have plans tonight."

"It’s Zhou Ya, isn’t it?"

"?" Zhang Zhe was stunned. "How did you know?"

"What’s so difficult about that? You’re my own flesh and blood. You think I don’t know what’s on your mind?"

"Your mother asked your high school classmates," Father Zhang interjected, revealing the truth.

"Mom?" Zhang Zhe’s brows furrowed.

"Well, I was just worried you wouldn’t be able to find someone you like! Don’t worry, I did my research. Zhou Ya just got divorced last year, and she doesn’t have any kids. She hasn’t remarried since. Who knows, maybe she’s been waiting for you?"

"Waiting for me? My ass," Zhang Zhe said, so exasperated he almost laughed. "You’re really something else, Mom."

"Forget it. I was going to tell you about my own matchmaking success today, but now I don’t feel like it."

"Dad, come on, let’s go inside. I’ll tell you about it."
