The two enormous eyes beneath the ocean did not move.

They simply stared at Adrian.

For some reason, that frightened him more than anything else.

There was no roar.

No attack.

No threat.

Just a silent gaze from something buried beneath the water.

Adrian took a slow breath.

The creature beside him noticed.

"You are afraid."

Adrian looked at it.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I don’t know what is down there."

The creature looked toward the black water.

"Neither do I."

Aeron moved closer to the shoreline.

"I can find out."

"No."

Adrian stopped him.

Aeron looked back.

"Why?"

"Because whatever is down there wants something."

The Guardian nodded.

"And that is exactly why you shouldn’t approach it."

Ryan stared at him.

"Wait. You’re telling us the giant ocean monster that can evolve faster than anything we’ve ever seen shouldn’t investigate the giant black ocean monster?"

"Yes."

Ryan pointed at the ocean.

"That sentence alone should probably convince us to leave."

Nobody laughed.

The eyes beneath the water disappeared.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the ocean began moving.

Not like waves.

Like breathing.

The entire sea expanded.

Then contracted.

Expanded.

Contracted.

Adrian felt the rhythm beneath his feet.

The ocean was breathing.

"It wants something," the creature whispered.

Adrian looked at it.

"How do you know?"

"Because I can feel it."

The creature placed a hand against its chest.

"I don’t know what this feeling is."

A small glow appeared inside its body.

"But I want to know."

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"That’s desire."

The creature looked at him.

"Is desire bad?"

Adrian hesitated.

"No."

"Then why is everyone afraid?"

"Because desire can make people do things they shouldn’t."

The creature considered that.

"Then desire is dangerous."

"Sometimes."

"Can it be good?"

Adrian looked at his brother.

His brother was staring at the ocean.

He seemed distracted.

"What do you want?" Adrian asked him.

His brother turned.

"I don’t know."

"That isn’t an answer."

He smiled slightly.

"I want to know who I am."

Adrian froze.

His brother continued.

"I want to know why Mother created me. I want to know why she hid me. I want to know why I was forgotten."

His voice became quieter.

"And I want to know why you were allowed to become human when I wasn’t."

The words hit Adrian harder than expected.

His brother looked away.

"I don’t hate you."

"I know."

"But sometimes I wish I had been you."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You don’t need to be me."

His brother looked at him.

"Then what should I be?"

"Yourself."

The answer seemed simple.

But his brother looked almost disappointed.

"Who is that?"

Adrian had no answer.

Before he could respond, the ocean exploded.

A massive column of black water shot into the sky.

Everyone was thrown backward.

Adrian hit the ground.

Something moved inside the column.

A shape.

Long.

Twisted.

Almost human.

Then the water collapsed.

A figure stood on the surface of the ocean.

It was impossible.

It looked like a person made entirely of black water.

Its face was featureless.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Yet Adrian knew it was looking at him.

The creature raised one hand.

The world suddenly became silent.

No waves.

No wind.

No birds.

Even Ryan stopped breathing.

Then a voice entered Adrian’s mind.

I WANT.

Adrian’s eyes widened.

The figure took one step.

I WANT.

Another step.

I WANT.

The voice became louder.

I WANT TO EXIST.

Adrian looked at the Guardian.

"That’s all?"

The Guardian’s expression was grim.

"No."

The black figure stopped.

I WANT TO BE SEEN.

Adrian’s heart tightened.

The creature continued.

I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED.

The rain of memories suddenly returned.

Drops fell from the sky.

But this time they weren’t memories from the people standing there.

They belonged to the thing in front of them.

Adrian saw darkness.

A world without light.

A place beneath the ocean.

Something waking.

Something watching life evolve.

Something learning.

It had watched Aeron emerge.

It had watched humans build cities.

It had watched Adrian change the world.

It had watched the Creator disappear.

And through all of it, it had remained alone.

Adrian lowered his hand.

"You’ve been there the entire time."

The figure nodded.

"You watched everything."

Another nod.

"Why didn’t you come before?"

The figure looked toward Adrian’s brother.

Then toward the small creature that had awakened emotion.

Then toward Aeron.

Finally, it pointed at Adrian.

I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO STOP BEING THE CREATOR.

Adrian froze.

The Guardian looked at him.

"That makes sense."

Adrian frowned.

"How?"

"Because you were the only thing standing between the world and its own desires."

Adrian looked at the black figure.

"I don’t control the world anymore."

"I KNOW."

"Then what do you want from me?"

The figure raised its hand.

NOTHING.

Adrian frowned.

"Nothing?"

The figure’s body began changing.

Its arms became thinner.

Its shape became smaller.

The darkness around it condensed.

Slowly, a face appeared.

A human face.

Adrian recognized it.

His own.

Ryan stepped backward.

"No way."

The black figure had become another Adrian.

But this Adrian looked older.

His eyes were empty.

His face was covered in cracks of black light.

Adrian stared at him.

"What are you?"

The copy smiled.

"I am desire."

The System appeared.

IDENTIFICATION FAILED.

Then:

ENTITY CLASSIFICATION: IMPOSSIBLE.

Then:

EMOTION HAS CREATED A SELF.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

The copy walked toward him.

"I was born when you learned to want."

Adrian shook his head.

"I didn’t create you."

"No."

The copy smiled.

"You didn’t."

It pointed toward the world.

"They did."

Adrian looked around.

The people.

The creatures.

Aeron.

His brother.

Elia.

Everyone had desires.

Everyone wanted something.

The world itself had begun producing something Adrian could never have created intentionally.

A being formed from the collective desire of life.

The copy looked at Adrian.

"You wanted freedom."

Adrian said nothing.

"You wanted your mother."

His eyes shifted.

"You wanted answers."

Adrian clenched his fists.

"You wanted to protect your friends."

Noah looked at him.

"You wanted to be human."

Adrian stared at the copy.

"And you wanted to stop being alone."

The copy smiled.

"Yes."

For the first time, Adrian understood.

This wasn’t an enemy.

Not yet.

It was a consequence.

The natural result of a world where living things could choose and feel.

Desire was inevitable.

The creature looked at Adrian.

"Tell me what I should want."

Adrian immediately shook his head.

"No."

The creature tilted its head.

"Why?"

"Because that’s your choice."

"I don’t know how."

"You’ll learn."

"What if I choose badly?"

"You probably will."

The creature seemed surprised.

"You aren’t afraid?"

"Oh, I’m terrified."

Adrian smiled.

"But that’s part of being alive."

His brother suddenly stepped forward.

"I can teach you."

Everyone turned toward him.

The desire-entity stared at him.

"Teach me what?"

His brother smiled.

"How to want something without taking it."

The entity remained silent.

His brother continued.

"I wanted to exist."

He looked at his mother.

"And I almost made everyone prove that I deserved it."

His voice trembled.

"But existence isn’t something other people have to earn for you."

The entity stared at him.

"What do you want now?"

His brother looked at Adrian.

Then at his mother.

Then at the world.

"I want a family."

Adrian smiled.

His mother began crying.

The entity looked confused.

"Why are you crying?"

She wiped her face.

"Because I’m happy."

The entity looked at her tears.

"Is that desire?"

"No."

She smiled.

"It’s love."

The entity touched one of the tears.

The instant its finger touched it, its entire body changed.

The black cracks disappeared.

The darkness became transparent.

For one brief moment, it looked almost human.

Then the ocean erupted with light.

A message appeared in the sky.

EMOTION HAS DEVELOPED.

DESIRE HAS DEVELOPED.

ATTACHMENT HAS DEVELOPED.

Adrian watched the words carefully.

Then a final message appeared.

CONFLICT IS INEVITABLE.

The sky darkened.

Across the horizon, thousands of lights appeared.

Each one belonged to something alive.

And each light began moving toward another.

Aeron looked around.

"They are approaching."

Adrian frowned.

"Who?"

The Guardian answered.

"Everyone."

The lights grew brighter.

People began shouting.

Creatures began moving.

Some wanted land.

Some wanted freedom.

Some wanted revenge.

Some wanted love.

Some wanted to be remembered.

Some wanted to rule.

And some simply wanted to survive.

The world was no longer silent.

For the first time, every living thing had something it wanted.

And Adrian suddenly realized the terrifying truth.

The Creator had been easy to fight.

Desire was not.

Because there was no single enemy.

There was no throne to destroy.

No system to shut down.

No being to defeat.

There were billions of individual desires.

And sooner or later...

they would collide.

The System appeared one final time.

NEXT EVOLUTION: CONFLICT.

Adrian stared at the message.

Then the lights across the world suddenly turned red.

LIFE HAS LEARNED TO WANT.

A pause.

NOW LIFE MUST LEARN WHAT TO DO WHEN TWO WANTS CANNOT BOTH COME TRUE.

Adrian looked at Noah.

Then Ryan.

Aeron.

Elia.

His brother.

His mother.

The Guardian.

Everyone was staring at the same horizon.

A distant sound echoed from somewhere beyond the ocean.

Not laughter this time.

A scream.

Then another.

Then thousands.

Adrian slowly closed his eyes.

The world had finally become free.

And now...

it had to learn how to survive that freedom.
