The screams didn’t stop.

They spread across the horizon like a wave.

One scream became ten.

Ten became hundreds.

Then thousands.

Adrian opened his eyes.

The lights that had appeared across the world were moving faster now.

Some were approaching each other.

Some were running away.

Others were crashing together.

The ocean beneath them began changing color.

Not black this time.

Red.

Ryan stared at the horizon.

"I think we have a problem."

Adrian nodded.

"Yeah."

"A really big problem?"

"Probably."

"How big?"

Adrian watched another flash of light explode in the distance.

"World-sized."

Ryan sighed.

"I was hoping you’d say something smaller."

Another explosion shook the ground.

Aeron turned toward the sound.

"That came from the city."

Noah immediately looked at Adrian.

"Should we go?"

Adrian nodded.

"Let’s move."

They started running.

Adrian’s mother remained behind for a moment, staring at the ocean.

Her first son stood beside her.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked.

She looked at him.

"I was thinking about how many times I made the wrong choice."

He smiled faintly.

"Then make a different one now."

She looked at him.

"You really are my son."

His smile widened.

"I know."

They followed the others.

The city was chaos.

People were running through the streets.

Cars had crashed into each other.

Buildings were shaking.

But the strangest part wasn’t the destruction.

It was why everyone was fighting.

Nobody had been ordered to attack.

There was no army.

No monster.

No invading force.

People were simply arguing.

One group wanted to leave.

Another wanted to stay.

Some wanted to destroy the strange creatures that had appeared.

Others wanted to protect them.

Some wanted to control the new world.

Others wanted complete freedom.

Every choice had created another choice.

And every choice was colliding with someone else’s.

Adrian stopped in the middle of the street.

"This isn’t random."

The Guardian nodded.

"No."

"It’s conflict."

"Yes."

Adrian looked around.

"But why now?"

The Guardian’s eyes moved toward the sky.

"Because before, people had nothing worth fighting over."

Adrian frowned.

"That isn’t true."

"It is."

The Guardian pointed toward the people.

"Food. Territory. Safety. Power. Love. Recognition. Belonging."

He looked at Adrian.

"When people couldn’t choose, they simply endured."

Adrian understood.

Freedom had created possibilities.

Emotion had created attachment.

Desire had created wants.

And now those wants had collided.

The System appeared.

CONFLICT STAGE: 01%

The number began increasing.

02%.

03%.

04%.

Adrian stared at it.

"What happens at one hundred?"

The System didn’t answer.

Instead, another message appeared.

CONFLICT IS NOT WAR.

Adrian paused.

The message changed.

CONFLICT IS THE MOMENT TWO TRUTHS REFUSE TO SHARE THE SAME WORLD.

Then it disappeared.

Adrian looked toward the street.

A man was shouting at another.

"You don’t understand! If we let them stay, they’ll take everything!"

The other man shouted back.

"They’re alive!"

"They’re dangerous!"

"So are we!"

Neither of them was entirely wrong.

Adrian watched them.

For the first time, he realized something uncomfortable.

There wasn’t always a correct side.

Sometimes two people could be right.

And still hurt each other.

Aeron stepped forward.

The crowd immediately backed away.

Some people screamed.

Others raised weapons.

Aeron stopped.

"I don’t want to fight."

A man pointed at him.

"You’re the reason this is happening!"

Aeron looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because you shouldn’t exist!"

Aeron lowered his head.

Adrian stepped between them.

"Stop."

The man looked at Adrian.

"Why should I listen to you?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he had no authority anymore.

He wasn’t the Creator.

He wasn’t a god.

He wasn’t even certain he was special.

He was simply Adrian.

A human standing between two sides.

"I can’t force you."

The man laughed.

"Then move."

Adrian didn’t.

The man raised his weapon.

Noah stepped forward.

"Don’t."

The man hesitated.

Aeron looked at Adrian.

"What should I do?"

Adrian stared at him.

"You decide."

Aeron remained still.

Then he slowly raised his hands.

"I will not attack."

The man lowered his weapon slightly.

Another person shouted from behind him.

"Coward!"

Aeron looked toward the voice.

Then he smiled.

"Maybe."

He turned toward Adrian.

"But I choose not to become what they fear."

The crowd became quiet.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then someone lowered their weapon.

Another followed.

Then another.

The System appeared.

CONFLICT RESPONSE RECORDED.

NON-VIOLENT CHOICE ACCEPTED.

Adrian smiled.

Maybe this was the lesson.

Conflict didn’t mean someone had to lose.

But before he could say anything, the ground shook.

A massive crack opened in the street.

Everyone stumbled backward.

Something emerged.

A structure.

Black stone.

It rose from beneath the city like a tower that had been buried for thousands of years.

Adrian stared at it.

The design looked familiar.

The same symbols.

The same impossible geometry.

The same mark he had seen in the Archive.

Noah whispered,

"Not again."

Adrian approached the structure.

His wooden car appeared in his hand.

The word NEXT was still carved into it.

Now the letters were glowing.

The black tower responded.

A door appeared.

Adrian touched it.

The door opened.

Inside was darkness.

Then a voice spoke.

"Enter."

Adrian looked at the others.

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

Adrian smiled.

"You’re coming anyway."

Ryan sighed.

"I knew you’d say that."

They entered.

The moment Adrian crossed the threshold, the city disappeared.

There was no floor.

No ceiling.

No walls.

Only countless floating images.

Every image showed a choice.

A woman choosing to leave her family.

A child choosing to tell the truth.

A soldier refusing an order.

A king choosing war.

A person choosing forgiveness.

A friend choosing betrayal.

A mother choosing her child.

A child choosing his mother.

Adrian saw thousands.

Then millions.

Some choices led to happiness.

Others led to suffering.

But there was no indication which was right.

His brother appeared beside him.

"Why are we seeing these?"

The Guardian answered.

"Because this is where conflict begins."

Adrian looked at him.

"Here?"

"No."

The Guardian pointed toward the images.

"Inside people."

The images suddenly merged.

Two appeared directly in front of Adrian.

The first showed a man protecting his family.

The second showed another man trying to protect his own family.

Both men were standing on opposite sides of a battlefield.

Both believed they were right.

Both believed the other was wrong.

Adrian stared at them.

"What happens if neither gives up?"

The Guardian didn’t answer.

The images collided.

Everything went black.

Then Adrian heard a voice.

"Someone always gives up."

He turned.

A figure stood behind him.

It looked human.

Unlike the others, it wasn’t made of water or light.

It was an ordinary man.

Brown hair.

Simple clothes.

No glowing eyes.

No strange aura.

Just a normal person.

Adrian stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"I am Conflict."

Ryan stared.

"You look disappointingly normal."

The man laughed.

"Conflict usually does."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Are you another evolution?"

"Yes."

"Did the world create you?"

"No."

"Then what created you?"

Conflict looked around at the millions of floating choices.

"People did."

Adrian frowned.

"Why are you here?"

Conflict smiled.

"To ask you one question."

The room became silent.

"What happens when someone wants something badly enough that they are willing to hurt another person for it?"

Adrian looked at the images.

"I don’t know."

Conflict smiled.

"Good."

He raised his hand.

The entire room changed.

Every floating image disappeared.

In their place appeared two doors.

One was white.

The other was black.

A message appeared between them.

ONE PERSON WILL ENTER EACH DOOR.

Adrian frowned.

"What’s behind them?"

Conflict smiled.

"You’ll find out."

"Why?"

"Because conflict requires a choice."

Adrian looked toward the others.

Noah shook his head.

"Don’t."

Ryan nodded.

"For once, I completely agree with Noah."

Adrian ignored them.

"Who chooses?"

Conflict pointed toward Adrian.

"You."

Adrian stared at the two doors.

"Why me?"

"Because you created the world where this question became possible."

"I already gave up being the Creator."

"I know."

"Then this isn’t my responsibility."

Conflict smiled.

"Exactly."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

"You finally understand."

Conflict stepped backward.

"You don’t have to solve every problem."

The doors began opening.

"But someone will."

Adrian looked inside the white door.

Nothing.

Then he looked inside the black door.

Still nothing.

His brother stepped beside him.

"What are you going to do?"

Adrian thought for a moment.

Then he noticed something.

The two doors weren’t identical.

The white door had no handle.

The black door had two.

Adrian smiled.

"Neither."

Conflict’s smile disappeared.

Adrian stepped away from the doors.

"You’re trying to make me choose between two options."

"Yes."

"But that’s not the only choice."

Conflict stared at him.

Adrian pointed toward the space between the doors.

"I choose a third option."

The entire room shook.

The doors cracked.

Conflict’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked surprised.

The System appeared.

UNDEFINED CHOICE DETECTED.

Then:

CONFLICT RESOLUTION: FAILED.

Adrian laughed.

"Sorry."

Conflict looked at him.

"You can’t escape every conflict by creating another choice."

"I know."

Adrian looked around.

"But sometimes the answer isn’t choosing between A and B."

He smiled.

"Sometimes you change the question."

The black tower began collapsing.

The millions of choices shattered into pieces of light.

Conflict disappeared.

But before he vanished, he whispered,

"Then I’ll change too."

Adrian’s smile faded.

"What?"

Conflict looked directly at him.

"If conflict cannot defeat you..."

His body began dissolving.

"...then perhaps desire can."

The world went black.

A final message appeared.

CONFLICT STAGE: 17%

Then another.

ALTERNATIVE CHOICE ACCEPTED.

Adrian opened his eyes.

He was standing back in the city.

Everyone was still there.

The fighting had stopped.

For a moment, everything was peaceful.

Then Adrian noticed something.

People were looking at each other differently.

Not with anger.

Not with fear.

With uncertainty.

The kind that came before a difficult decision.

His brother suddenly grabbed Adrian’s arm.

"Adrian."

"What?"

His brother pointed toward the sky.

A single enormous symbol had appeared above the city.

It wasn’t the symbol of Choice.

It wasn’t Memory.

It wasn’t Emotion.

It wasn’t Desire.

It was something Adrian had never seen before.

A heart.

Cracked directly down the middle.

The System appeared.

CONFLICT STAGE: 18%

Then:

NEW VARIABLE DETECTED.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"What variable?"

The answer appeared slowly.

SACRIFICE.

The cracked heart began beating.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire world heard a voice.

"If everyone wants something..."

The voice paused.

"...who will be willing to give something up?"

Adrian looked at his friends.

At his family.

At his brother.

At Aeron.

And for the first time, he realized that the next challenge wouldn’t ask them what they wanted.

It would ask them what they were willing to lose.
