Chapter 605: Chapter 388: The Future
"Huh..."
Zhou Chen was stunned. He was just about to call the Prophet to report this, and he’d even come up with a reason. He would say that Ke Feng was probably one of Dupe’s men, and that after getting Forbidden Object B-022: Crimson Full Moon, Dupe would very likely perform that ritual to awaken some Demigod Level evil entity. There was no way the Prophet would ignore it after finding out.
But then, to his surprise, the Prophet himself called.
’Isn’t this a bit too much of a coincidence?’
’The Prophet isn’t always watching me, is he?’
With a strange expression, Zhou Chen looked at the caller ID on his phone screen, then answered the call. "Hello?"
"Have you eaten?" the Prophet asked, his tone perfectly ordinary.
’It’s a little late for that, boss...’ Zhou Chen thought. "I’ve eaten," he replied.
"The organization has a mission for you."
’I knew it...’ Zhou Chen was not surprised in the least. "What’s the mission?"
"Something big is going to happen in Hai City soon, but the interference from a high-Status Power is preventing me from seeing the future clearly. However, I’ve managed to piece together a rough picture from various sources of information..."
The Prophet said, "The timing of your supervisor’s evidence submission was excellent. It handed a knife to Dupe’s political enemies, and they’ve decided to use this opportunity to take him down. Things are going smoothly. After all, Dupe has made plenty of enemies over the years, and there’s no shortage of people who want to deal with him. Now that his criminal record has been exposed, many people can’t stand his actions...
The Judgement Court will move to arrest him in the next few days, but he’ll make a final struggle... Yes, it’s the matter you’ve been investigating recently."
’So Ke Feng really is Dupe’s subordinate. That means the Prophet knows everything...’ Zhou Chen hurriedly asked, "Can that ritual save Dupe’s life?"
"It’s an awakening ritual, used to wake up an Evil God suspected of having been in a deep sleep since the end of the Old Era. If Dupe succeeds, he might become the Evil God’s adherent. He certainly wouldn’t be able to remain in the Human World, but he could become an Emperor in the Abyss. That’s his plan to survive."
The Prophet scoffed. "If he chooses to fall into the Abyss, he’s essentially dead anyway."
’An Evil God suspected of being asleep since the end of the Old Era?’ Zhou Chen was startled. He hadn’t expected the Demigod Level evil entity to have such an origin. ’Could it also be one of the Lucky Ones, struck by a Heaven-Sent Authority?’
He pondered for a moment before asking, "Can’t we just go and capture Dupe directly?"
The Judgement Court’s combat power is formidable. They can even capture and kill Crowned Kings. Although Dupe is a Grand Councilor of Asia, his strength is only at Tier Four. If the Judgement Court wanted to capture him, they could definitely do it within ten minutes.
"It’s possible, but letting him proceed offers a greater reward."
The Prophet paused for a moment, then said, "Setting aside the incidents in Jinzhu and Hong City, which involve time loops, I could actually find ways to resolve the events in North Carolina and many other places ahead of time, minimizing casualties—or even reducing them to zero.
But, Zhou Chen, do you know how many future time branches I can see?"
"No," Zhou Chen said, shaking his head.
"An infinite number," the Prophet said calmly. "The number of timelines I can see is endless. Every time I use my ability, I am strolling through countless time branches born from countless possibilities, observing near-infinite variations.
And among these near-infinite variations, 98.25 percent of the futures are dead silent, with nothing in existence. What do you suppose happened in those futures?"
Zhou Chen raised an eyebrow. "The end of the world?"
"Yes. Futures where the Human World remains safe and sound exist in only a very small number of timelines. In those timelines, we even manage to completely resolve the Abyss problem and venture into the vast sea of stars. But the vast majority of futures are dark and desperate. My job, and the job of many others, is to do everything in our power to avoid those bad futures and guide the World toward a better one.
This job requires us to guide and intervene in many matters, and sometimes even to let them run their course, just so certain things can achieve the expected outcome. Take the North Carolina incident, for example. If we had intervened beforehand, we wouldn’t have reaped such a bountiful harvest in the end.
But looking at it from another angle, that harvest was built upon the countless corpses of the dead in North Carolina... I often ask myself, what’s the difference between doing this and being a murderer?
Although I can console myself with the idea that ’we aren’t protecting individuals, but the human race as a whole,’ that sense of guilt never goes away...
Ah, sorry, I’ve said a bit too much. Do you have any other questions?"
Zhou Chen fell silent. He didn’t know how to voice an opinion on the matter, so he could only ask, "What happened in those timelines?"
"I can’t say," the Prophet said, seemingly shaking his head.
’If you can’t say, then you shouldn’t have brought it up in the first place! It’s so annoying to get my curiosity piqued and then get no explanation...’ Zhou Chen complained internally, then thought for a moment and said, "So, you’re saying that letting Dupe continue will produce a result that benefits the World’s future?"
"There’s a certain probability of that, but the outcome could also be harmful. That’s why we need you."
"Me?" Zhou Chen’s eyebrows shot up in astonishment.
"The possibilities you possess are a veritable storm. It’s no exaggeration to say your Destiny Gravity is like a black hole.
Remember the Divine War Ruins? The Star Association has spent the last few days finding Divine War Ruins that were sealed in the cracks of history and time within several Restricted Areas. It took a great deal of effort to drag them out. The reason Fallen Paradise was able to drag out a Divine War Ruin so easily in North Carolina is actually inseparable from your Destiny Gravity.
In any matter you participate in, the number of possibilities explodes. Even in a situation that is one hundred percent unfavorable to us, there’s a chance a favorable possibility will open up. Likewise, even if it’s one hundred percent favorable, an unfavorable possibility could emerge. In other words, you’re a double-edged sword.
However, you’ve only brought about positive possibilities so far, so I’m very much looking forward to your future performance."
"That’s a bit of an exaggeration..." Zhou Chen was skeptical. "Back in North Carolina, there were Tier Five experts everywhere and even a few Demigods. How could a Little Tier Three like me have that much influence?"
"That, I do not know," the Prophet replied, his answer somewhat evasive.
He then changed the subject. "Tomorrow, you’ll have to end the lovey-dovey time with your little girlfriend and take a trip to Hai City. If I’m not mistaken, trouble will start not long after you arrive."
’You make me sound like a walking disaster...’ Zhou Chen couldn’t help but grumble to himself.
"Don’t worry, there will be plenty of benefits. I’ve collected another Forging Hammer used by a Master Forger, and I have some secret lore from the Old Era to tell you... Oh, right, I also have an Authority on hand that would suit your other girlfriend," the Prophet said, starting to dangle a carrot.
’I can hardly refuse...’ Zhou Chen nodded. "I understand. I’ll head to Hai City first thing tomorrow morning."
"Remember to make some preparations," the Prophet reminded him.
