Miller Street smelled like tallow, wet wood, and people who had stopped expecting better.
Kai found the chandler’s shop by the thick scent of melted fat and the faded sign hanging crooked above a dark storefront. A narrow wooden stairwell clung to the side of the building, leading up to a second-floor landing lit by a single low lantern. Three plain doors waited at the top. Only one had a small slate hanging beside it.
Bed – 2 copper night.
He climbed the stairs quietly, Presence Concealment still half-active out of habit. The wood creaked under his weight anyway. At the middle door he knocked once and waited.
Footsteps dragged across the floor inside. The door opened a narrow crack. An older woman with tired eyes and a thin mouth looked him over from boots to messy hair. She took in the oversized orphanage clothes, the lack of bags, and the fact that he was alone after dark.
"Two copper," she said. "No trouble. No guests. Out by morning bell if you can’t pay again. You cause problems, I throw you out myself."
Kai dug into his pocket and handed over his last two coins. The final copper from Rena’s payment disappeared into her hand. She stepped aside without another word and pointed at a thin cot under the small window.
The room was barely larger than a storage closet. One cot with a flat mattress and a rough blanket. One three-legged stool. One chipped basin on a crooked shelf. The air smelled of dust, old smoke, and someone else’s sweat that had never fully left the walls. It was still better than the orphanage.
Kai stepped inside. The woman pulled the door shut behind him. The latch clicked. Footsteps faded down the hall.
He stood alone in the middle of the small room for a moment, then dropped Presence Concealment and sat on the edge of the cot. The frame gave a tired squeak.
Silence settled in, heavier than he expected.
No distant coughing of younger orphans. No chance of Garren’s footsteps in the hallway. No Miss Helga’s tired voice assigning morning chores. Just the occasional creak of the building and the muffled sound of someone moving in the room next door.
Kai leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and opened the System window.

He stared at the numbers for a long time.
Leaving the orphanage had been the correct decision. Garren’s little ambush with the workhouse boys was now a problem for an empty hallway. The thin mattress and gray porridge were behind him. So was the fragile safety of a place that had never really protected him.
The cost was everything he currently owned.
He was broke again. Two copper had bought him one night and a door that locked. Tomorrow morning he would need more money or another plan. The district did not care about orphans who had almost survived a fever and then decided they were special.
Kai rubbed his face with both hands and let his thoughts drift where they always drifted when the noise stopped.
Lira.
She had followed him into the dark for the second time. She had given him the side door, then the warning about Garren, then the name of this street. She kept choosing to involve herself even while telling him he was an idiot. That kind of stubborn concern was rare. It was also dangerous for her.
The image of her in the alley came back easily. Breathing a little too fast. Hair messy from moving through the streets. Dress shifted by the walk so the collar sat lower than usual. The soft line of her collarbones. The way the fabric had pulled across her chest when she held the booklet tightly. Small, soft, and clearly not used to chasing people after nightfall.
She keeps risking herself for someone she met days ago. Either she’s too kind for this place or she’s already caught on me in a way she doesn’t want to look at directly.
I want to know which one it is. I want to see what her face does if I push a little. I want to know if that quiet voice gets quieter or sharper when she’s flustered. The System is going to keep paying me for these thoughts either way.

Kai exhaled through his nose and forced the mental image aside before it could climb higher.
Then there was Rena.
Different problem entirely. Scarred. Controlled. The kind of woman who hired a thin orphan to watch a door and walked away like the entire district answered to her. Compact body under fitted leather. Short black hair that left the back of her neck bare. Pale eyes that measured people like tools. She had looked at him with calculated interest and then disappeared. Finding her again would not be as simple as walking back to the Rusted Mug and waiting.
The System had liked her. That alone made her valuable.
One girl who keeps trying to keep me alive and gets annoyed when I make it difficult. One woman who might kill someone for looking at her wrong and still paid me in copper. I want both. The System clearly wants both. My old self would have called this pathetic greed. My current self calls it efficient target acquisition. Progress.
He lay back on the cot. The blanket was thin and slightly scratchy. The ceiling was low enough that he could have touched it if he raised his arm fully. Outside, a dog barked once and then went quiet. Somewhere below, the chandler’s shop settled for the night with a final creak of wood.
Kai turned the situation over like a puzzle.
Short-term priorities were clear now that he had a locked door:
First, money. Two copper had bought one night. He needed a better source of income than occasional door-watching. The district had work for people willing to do ugly or boring things. He would find some of it tomorrow.
Second, Rena. He needed a way to cross paths with her again without looking like a lost puppy. The Rusted Mug was still the best starting point.
Third, the Claim Mark. One charge. Fifty percent extra Desire Points from a single target for a full day. Using it on Lira would be the efficient choice. She was already close. She was already giving him information and concern. Marking her would accelerate the bond and the points. It would also change something between them that he wasn’t sure he wanted to change yet.
Fourth, Lira herself. She needed to stop following him into the dark before the district taught her why that was a bad idea. Or he needed to get strong enough that her involvement stopped being a liability.
Kai stared at the dark window and felt the familiar, unclean grin pull at his mouth.
The orphanage was finished. The Tutorial was finished. He had a System that paid him for wanting things, a body that no longer felt like it would break in a strong wind, and two very different women already tangled in his new life.
It was not much.
It was more than he had owned the morning he woke up in this world.
Tomorrow he would start turning it into something that could last.
He closed his eyes, one arm behind his head, and let the quiet of Miller Street settle around him. The Claim Mark sat in his status like a loaded tool. The map of the lower district glowed faintly at the edge of his thoughts. Somewhere out there, Lira was probably back inside the orphanage walls, still angry at him. Somewhere else, Rena was doing whatever scarred women did after midnight.
Kai’s last clear thought before sleep pulled him under was simple and completely in character.
Two hundred and forty-six points. One locked door. Zero copper left.
Time to go hunting.
