Morning light pushed through the dirty window like it was doing the room a favor.

Kai opened his eyes to the same low ceiling and the same thin blanket. The cot had left a dull ache across his shoulders. Rank E reinforcement made it tolerable, nothing more.

He sat up and checked the System out of habit.

No miracles overnight. Still broke.

The boarding house rule was simple. No coin, no bed. The tired woman downstairs would not care about Systems or reincarnation. She would only care that his hands were empty.

Kai stood, stretched, and pulled the oversized shirt straight. Presence Concealment settled over him like a light cloak. It would not make him invisible, but it would make casual eyes slide off a thin orphan in hand-me-downs.

He left the key on the stool, opened the door, and stepped out.

The stairwell smelled of tallow and old dust. Downstairs, the chandler’s shop was already open. The woman from last night glanced at him once, confirmed he was leaving, and went back to her work without a word. Efficient.

Outside, Miller Street was already moving. Carts rattled over uneven stone. Someone shouted about fresh bread two corners away. The air carried coal smoke and fried dough.

Kai’s stomach twisted. He ignored it.

Zero copper. No food. No bed for tonight unless I fix the first problem. The System pays in Desire Points, not breakfast. Priorities, Kai.

He opened the intermediate map in his mind and started walking.

Eastern Market Row sat closest. Crowds meant opportunities. Crowds also meant people who would notice a boy with no money trying too hard. He kept Presence Concealment active and his pace steady.

Desire Sense swept outward as he moved.

Most signatures were dull. Morning fatigue. Low irritation. The flat emotional noise of people who had work to do and no time for anything else. A few warmer sparks appeared near food stalls — hunger mixed with the small pleasure of eating. Nothing useful yet.

Kai stuck to the edges of the market.

He watched how money changed hands. Porters carried crates for copper. Boys ran messages between stalls. A man with a missing finger paid two younger teens to watch his cart while he argued with a supplier. Small jobs. Ugly jobs. Jobs that did not require a name or a clean shirt.

That was the level he needed.

He was considering approaching a porter crew when Desire Sense caught something sharper.

Focused. Controlled. Familiar.

Kai slowed.

Rena stood near the far end of the row, half in the shadow of a hanging canvas. Black hair. Scar. Same fitted leather under an open cloak. She was speaking with a broad-shouldered man who kept his hands visible and his posture careful. Their conversation looked businesslike. Short. Efficient.

She finished, dismissed the man with a small nod, and turned.

Her pale eyes landed on Kai almost immediately.

The corner of her scarred mouth lifted.

Of course she noticed me. Presence Concealment works on average people. She is not average.

Kai dropped the passive and walked over. No point pretending.

Rena watched him approach with the same measuring look she had used the first time.

"Empty pockets already?" she asked. "That was fast even for an orphan."

"Two copper bought a bed. Morning made it temporary."

"And now you’re in the market looking like someone hoping the ground will spit out coins."

"Something like that."

Rena glanced past him, scanning the row out of habit, then back to his face. Desire Sense painted her emotional state in clear colors. Mild amusement. Assessment. A thin thread of interest that had not disappeared since the night at the Rusted Mug.

She looks even better in daylight. The scar pulls her mouth into that permanent half-smile. Leather sits tight across her hips and chest. She stands like she has already decided how to kill everyone in reach if she needs to. I want to know what her voice sounds like when she is not giving orders. I also want to not get stabbed for staring.

Rena’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if she felt the weight of his attention.

"You’re staring again," she said.

"Occupational hazard."

"You don’t have an occupation."

"I’m working on it."

She studied him for another second, then made a small decision.

"I have something small," she said. "Not door work. A delivery. Package goes from the tannery near the south alley to a house on Crow Street. You don’t open it. You don’t take side routes. You don’t talk to anyone about it. Pay is five copper on arrival."

Five copper. More than two nights at the boarding house. Enough for food and another bed.

Kai nodded once. "When?"

"Now." Rena reached into her cloak and pulled out a wrapped bundle the size of a small book, bound in plain cloth and tied with dark string. She held it out. "Tannery is ten minutes walk. Ask for the old man with the burnt hand. He knows the rest. Crow Street house has a red shutter. Knock twice, wait, knock once. Give it to whoever opens the door. Then you get paid."

Kai took the package. It was heavier than it looked.

"Any reason someone would want to take this from me?"

Rena’s scarred smile widened a fraction.

"There’s always a reason," she said. "Try not to find out what it is. If you do, run toward people, not away from them."

She stepped back, already finished with the conversation.

"Crow Street. Red shutter. Don’t make me look for a new delivery boy before noon."

Then she turned and disappeared into the market crowd with the same easy movement as before.

Kai stood there with the package under his arm and five copper waiting on the other end of a walk.

Delivery work. Possible risk. Better than starving. And she still looks at me like I’m a problem she has not decided whether to solve or use. Progress.

He adjusted his grip on the bundle, brought up the map, and started toward the tannery.

Behind him, the market kept moving. Ahead of him, the district waited with its usual mix of opportunity and bad decisions.

Kai walked anyway.

Empty pockets had a way of simplifying choices.
