Kai returned to Miller Street with four copper in his pocket and the taste of greasy meat still on his tongue.
The chandler’s shop was still open. The same tired woman sat behind the counter, sorting thick candles. She looked up when he entered, saw the coins in his hand, and held out her palm without ceremony.
"One night," Kai said, placing two copper in her hand.
She nodded, took the money, and jerked her chin toward the stairs. Same room. Same rules. No trouble.
He climbed the narrow steps, unlocked the familiar door, and stepped inside. The small room had not changed. Thin cot. Crooked stool. Chipped basin. The air still smelled of dust and old smoke. It felt different anyway.
He closed the door, locked it, and leaned his back against the wood for a moment.
Two days ago he had been sleeping on a fever-stained mattress in an orphanage, counting hours until a bully and two hired boys tried to teach him manners. Now he had a locked door, four copper, food in his stomach, and a System that kept paying him for the simple crime of wanting things.
Progress was relative.
Kai pushed off the door, sat on the cot, and opened the full status window.
Desire Points: 265
Claim Mark: 1/1
Body Reinforcement: Rank E
Minor Presence Concealment: Ready
Copper: 4
He stared at the Claim Mark longer than the rest.
One charge. Still unused. The efficient part of his mind kept pointing at Lira. She was close. She was already invested. She kept choosing to help him even when it put her at risk. Marking her would accelerate everything the System wanted — points, bond, control.
The rest of him hesitated for reasons that had nothing to do with efficiency.
She followed me into the dark twice. Gave me the side door, the warning, the name of this street. She looks at me like I’m a problem she can’t stop trying to solve. Small frame. Soft lines. That thin dress that never quite fits her right.
I want to see what happens when someone finally prioritizes her the way she keeps prioritizing me. I also want to put my hands on her and find out how quiet that voice gets. Both urges are honest. Only one of them is safe.

Current Desire Points: 271
Kai exhaled and forced the thought aside before it could climb higher.
Rena was the other problem. She had given him work and walked away. She treated him like a tool that had not yet proven it could become something more. That was fine for now. Tools that performed well eventually got better jobs. He would make sure he performed.
The scarred smile. The pale eyes. The way leather sat across her hips when she turned. Controlled strength. Calculated interest. She felt like the kind of woman who would respect results and punish weakness without hesitation.
I want her to look at me without measuring the exit routes. I want to know what that scar tastes like. The System agreed the moment she first spoke to me. That is either a good sign or a warning label I am choosing to ignore.
He lay back on the cot and stared at the low ceiling.
The orphanage was finished. Truly finished. He would not be going back for gray porridge or thin mattresses or the fragile safety of a place that had never protected him. Garren and his hired boys could have the empty hallway. Miss Helga could mark another name off her list. Lira still lived inside those walls, but even that felt temporary. She was already half out the door every time she chose to follow him.
This small room on Miller Street was not home. It was a foothold. A locked door and a few coins. The first real piece of ground he had claimed in this world that belonged to him alone.
Kai turned the remaining two copper over in his fingers.
Tomorrow he would need more money. Deliveries were fine for survival, but survival was no longer the only goal. He needed information. Better work. A way to make Rena see him as more than disposable. A decision about the Claim Mark before the System started punishing hesitation.
He also needed to decide what to do about Lira before her habit of chasing him into the dark got her hurt.
The System window flickered once, as if responding to the direction of his thoughts.
[Arc Progress Recognized]
Host has established independent footing outside original environment.
Foundation conditions met.
New operational phase available.
Kai read the message twice.
The Tutorial had ended days ago. This felt like the System’s way of acknowledging something larger. The first stretch of pure survival was over. What came next would not be as gentle.
He dismissed the window and let the quiet of the room settle around him.
Four copper. A locked door. Two women already tangled in his life for completely different reasons. A body that no longer felt like it would snap in a strong wind. And a System that kept rewarding him for every hungry, dishonest, ambitious thought he refused to suppress.
Kai closed his eyes with a small, sharp grin.
The orphanage Chapter of his new life was done.
Time to start building something that could not be taken away by a few older boys with sticks and bad intentions.
