Morning on Miller Street arrived with the same indifference as the night before.

Kai woke to pale light and the distant sound of the chandler already moving stock downstairs. He sat up, checked his status out of habit, and counted the two copper he had left after paying for the room.

Copper: 2

Enough for another night if he spent nothing else. Not enough if he wanted to eat and keep the door locked tomorrow.

He washed his face in the chipped basin, pulled on the same oversized clothes, and left the key on the stool. The tired woman downstairs glanced at him as he passed. No greeting. No questions. Perfect.

Outside, the lower district was already awake.

Kai activated Presence Concealment and started walking with no clear destination. He needed work. Better work than one-off deliveries. He needed information. And sooner or later he needed to put himself in Rena’s path again without looking like a lost dog hoping for scraps.

Desire Sense swept the streets as he moved.

Most signatures were the usual morning noise — fatigue, low irritation, the flat focus of people chasing copper. Nothing useful. Nothing dangerous enough to matter.

He bought a piece of dense bread for one copper and ate it while walking. The remaining coin sat alone in his pocket like a bad joke.

One copper left. A locked door that expires at dawn. A Claim Mark I still have not used. Two women who keep appearing in my head for completely different reasons. The System calls this foundation. I call it being one bad day away from sleeping in an alley again.

He turned toward the area near the Rusted Mug without fully admitting that was the plan.

The tavern looked worse in daylight. Peeling paint. Stained walls. A man slumped near the front entrance who might have been sleeping or dead. Kai ignored him and circled toward the back alley where Rena had first hired him.

Empty.

He waited a few minutes anyway, leaning against the wall with Presence Concealment active. No familiar signature appeared. Rena was elsewhere. Or she was watching and choosing not to be seen.

Either option fit her.

Kai pushed off the wall and started a slow loop through the surrounding streets. He paid attention to where people with money moved, where the quieter deals happened, and where the district’s less official work might sit. Porters. Message runners. Watchers. The ugly jobs that did not require a clean name.

He was three streets away from the tavern when Desire Sense picked up something familiar.

Not Rena.

Lira.

Kai stopped.

Her signature was close, tight with tension, moving carefully through the edge of the market. She should have been inside the orphanage. She was not.

He turned into the narrow lane her presence was coming from and waited.

Lira appeared a moment later, hood up, booklet tucked against her side, expression set in the particular mix of determination and anxiety she wore every time she left the orphanage walls. She saw him, stopped hard, and then walked the rest of the way like she had already accepted she was going to regret this.

"You are terrible at staying where it is safe," Kai said.

"You are terrible at not needing warnings," she answered.

Up close, the morning light was unkind in the best way. It showed the slight shadows under her eyes, the ink stain on her index finger, the way her plain dress sat against her frame. She had the kind of modest chest that made cheap fabric look softer than it was. Narrow waist. Clean collarbones. The stubborn line of her mouth when she was trying not to look worried.

She left the orphanage again. For me. Again. That thin dress does nothing to hide the shape of her when she moves like this. I want to push the hood back and see her face properly. I want to know if she followed me because she is kind or because she cannot stop. Both options make my pulse jump. The System is going to charge me for this either way.

Lira’s cheeks colored slightly under his stare. She looked away first.

"Garren is telling people you ran," she said. "He is making it sound like you were too afraid to face him. Some of the older boys believe it. It will not matter much unless you plan to go back."

"I do not plan to go back."

"I know." She hesitated, then added, "I brought this."

She held out a small folded cloth. Inside were three copper coins and a piece of hard bread.

Kai looked at the offering, then at her face.

"You stole from the orphanage?"

"I saved them," she said tightly. "Miss Helga does not count every coin when she is tired. Do not make it a moral discussion. Just take it."

He took the cloth. The coins were warm from her hand.

She is stealing for me now. Quiet, careful, ink-stained Lira is committing small crimes so I can eat. That is either loyalty or a slow-motion disaster. I want to pin her against this wall and see what else she is willing to do when she stops pretending she is only here to help. I also want to tell her to stop before the district notices her. Only one of those urges is responsible.

"You need to stop following me," Kai said.

"Then stop making decisions that require warnings."

"That is not how this works."

"I know." Lira pulled her hood forward again, already stepping back. "Miller Street is not invisible. If Garren decides to look beyond the orphanage, he will start with places like that. Be careful."

She turned and walked away before he could answer. Fast. Controlled. Like someone who had already used more courage than she budgeted for the morning.

Kai watched her go until Desire Sense lost her signal around the corner.

Then he looked down at the three copper and the bread in his hand.

She is going to get hurt doing this. The district eats soft things. I am not soft anymore, but she still is. If I keep letting her chase me, I am responsible for what happens to her. If I push her away too hard, I lose the only person in this city who has chosen to help me without a price list. Both paths are ugly. Both paths are mine.

He ate the bread, pocketed the coins, and started walking again.

Four copper had become six. Still not power. Still not safety. But the direction was clear.

The lower district did not care about orphans with fever stories and strange systems. It cared about usefulness. Rena had called him a delivery boy. Garren called him a coward. Lira kept treating him like someone worth saving.

Kai intended to become something none of those labels could hold.

He turned toward the deeper lanes of the district, Presence Concealment active, Desire Sense open, six copper sitting against his thigh.
