Kai did not sleep.

Fifty-two copper sat on the stool like it belonged to someone else. The net-yard conversation kept replaying in sharper detail every time he closed his eyes. The lean man’s calm offer. The heavy one’s silent promise. The way they had filed Lira under "usable pressure" without even raising their voices.

He left Miller Street before dawn.

Presence Concealment wrapped tight. Desire Sense stretched as far as it would go. He took the long way toward the orphanage and stopped at a distance that still let him see the side door near the laundry shed.

No fresh scrape marks.

That should have been good news. It only made the quiet feel worse.

Kai circled once, checking the usual lanes orphans used for errands. Empty. Too empty for the hour. He was about to pull back when Desire Sense caught a thin, familiar thread of anxiety moving fast along the inner wall.

Lira.

She appeared near the laundry gap carrying nothing this time, hood up, movements tight. She saw him almost immediately and jerked her head toward the same narrow space they had used before. Kai followed.

Up close she looked like she had not slept either.

"Two men asked about you at the workhouse gate yesterday," she said without preamble. "Not Garren’s people. Cleaner clothes. They wanted to know which orphans leave the walls most often. Someone pointed at me."

Kai felt the net-yard threat click into place.

"They know the side door exists," he said.

Lira’s face went still. "I have not marked it since we talked."

"They do not need you to mark it. They only need to watch who checks it."

Silence sat between them, heavy and immediate. Somewhere inside the orphanage a bell rang for morning chores. Ordinary sound. It felt like it belonged to a different world.

They moved faster than I expected. Using the orphanage gossip net instead of following me directly. Smart. Cheap. Effective. If they take her, I lose the only person who has given me clean information without a price list. If I pull her out now, I create noise Rena will notice and the district will file under "he can be moved." Every option costs something I do not have yet.

The System’s timing remained impeccable and completely unhelpful.

"You need to stop leaving the walls entirely for a while," Kai said. "No errands. No side-door checks. Nothing that puts you in open lanes."

Lira’s jaw tightened. "And you?"

"I handle it."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only one that keeps you inside the walls instead of in a net-yard conversation."

She stared at him for a long second, emotional signature a hard mix of fear, anger, and the same stubborn warmth she kept failing to kill. Then she nodded once, sharp and reluctant.

"Three days," she said. "If I do not see any sign you are still alive after that, I start leaving marks again."

Kai almost smiled. It came out wrong.

"Two days. I will make contact."

Lira turned and disappeared back toward the laundry entrance without another word. Kai waited until her signature faded deep inside the building before he moved.

The district had already started collecting on the pattern he had become.

He found Rena near the canal crates earlier than usual. She took one look at his face and dismissed the runner she had been speaking to.

"You have a problem," she said. Not a question.

"Two men tried to put a collar on me last night. Soft leverage. The orphan girl. I refused. They postponed the consequence."

Rena’s expression did not change, but Desire Sense picked up a thin spike of irritation that was not directed at him.

"Describe them."

Kai did. Heavy build, violence-for-hire posture. Leaner one, better clothes, calm voice, preferred talking. Rena listened without interrupting.

When he finished she was quiet for a few seconds.

"The lean one matches a runner who works the edge of the South Cut faction," she said. "They do not usually reach this far north unless someone is testing new pieces. You have been noticed by people who dislike independent movement in their margins."

"Can you shut it down?"

"I can make it expensive for them to continue. That is not the same as shutting it down. And I will not spend that kind of capital for free."

Kai met her eyes. "What do you want?"

Rena’s scarred mouth pulled slightly.

"There is a collection happening tonight in the South Cut. Not coin. Names. A list of independent operators who have started looking useful. Your name is likely already on a draft. I want the finished list before it moves up. You get it, I make the orphan girl expensive enough that most people stop reaching for her."

The trade was clear. Risk for protection. Information for breathing room.

Kai nodded once.

"Where?"

Rena gave him the location, the timing, and the face of the man who would be carrying the list. Then she added one final line.

"If you fail, I still get value from watching who kills you. Try not to fail."

She left.

Kai stood alone with the new job sitting in his chest like a second heartbeat.

The district had stopped offering small tests.

It had started offering choices that cost real pieces.

He turned toward the South Cut with Presence Concealment already tightening and the Claim Mark still unused in his status, heavier now than it had ever been.

Lira had given him two days.

The South Cut would try to take them from him before the first one ended.
