The South Cut smelled like stagnant water and old rope.
Kai moved through it after full dark with Presence Concealment drawn as tight as it would go. Desire Sense swept ahead in short, careful pulses. The lanes here were narrower, the buildings lower, the quiet more deliberate. People who belonged in the South Cut did not linger in the open without reason.
Rena’s instructions had been precise. A low warehouse near the canal spur. Side entrance with a rusted latch. The man carrying the list would leave the back room after the evening count, ledger case in hand, two escorts walking half a step behind. The window to take the list was short and ugly.
Kai found a broken loading platform that gave him a partial view of the side entrance and settled in to wait.
Time stretched.
Two signatures eventually emerged from the warehouse. One matched the description — medium build, careful posture, a flat case held close to his side. The other two were heavier, the kind of men who existed to make theft expensive. Their emotional colors were flat and professional. Not angry. Ready.
Kai let them pass the first junction, then moved.
He did not try for a clean lift in the open. That was suicide. Instead he used the lanes the way Rena had implied they could be used — cutting ahead through a parallel alley, Presence Concealment swallowing the sound of his steps, and reaching the narrow pinch point where the route forced the three men closer together.
He needed the case, not a fight.
When the group hit the pinch, Kai stepped out of the deeper shadow just long enough to hook the case’s strap with a short, sharp pull and immediately drop back into Concealment while the men were still reacting to the sudden weight shift.
Shouts exploded behind him.
He ran.
Not in a straight line. Never in a straight line. Desire Sense screamed warnings as the two escorts split — one charging the last place he had been seen, the other trying to cut toward the canal. Kai took a vertical option instead, hauling himself onto a low roof, crossing two uneven gaps, and dropping into a different lane while the System flickered urgent text across his vision.

Helpful. Still not a weapon.
Boots hammered the stone behind him for three more turns before the sounds began to scatter. The escorts were fast, but they did not know the exact maze of gaps Kai had started memorizing since leaving the orphanage. He used every one of them, lungs burning, Rank E reinforcement the only reason his legs had not already given out.
By the time he reached the edge of the South Cut the pursuit had thinned to a single distant signature that finally broke off.
Kai did not stop until he was two full districts away and Desire Sense reported nothing sharp behind him.
Only then did he look at the case.
Plain leather. Simple clasp. No lock worth the name. Inside was a thin sheaf of pages covered in tight, practical handwriting — names, rough locations, short notes on usefulness and recent movements. His own description was already there, near the bottom of the second page.
Thin. Orphanage origin. Clean movement. Connected to Rena’s edge work. Soft leverage available through female orphan contact.
They had written Lira down like a tool.
Kai closed the case and started walking toward the meeting point Rena had given him.
She was waiting in the deeper shadow behind the bakery alcove. He handed her the case without ceremony. She opened it, scanned the pages under the edge of a shuttered lantern, and gave a single short nod.
"Complete," she said. "Including the notes on you. Predictable."
She counted the agreed copper into his hand, then added a second small fold of coins without comment. Hazard pay, or investment. Kai did not ask.
"I will put weight behind the girl for now," Rena said. "Enough that most South Cut runners will look for easier pressure. It will not last forever. You have bought time, not safety."
"How much time?"
"Enough to become less useful as a soft target and more useful as something harder to touch. Do not waste it."
Rena slipped the case under her cloak and left.
Kai stood alone with the new coins and the clearer shape of the board.
Lira was temporarily more expensive to hurt. The South Cut had lost a list and gained a reason to remember his face. Rena had moved him one step further from disposable. And somewhere in the pages he had stolen, his connection to a quiet orphan girl had been written down as a vulnerability anyone could read.
He walked back toward Miller Street with the weight of that knowledge sitting heavier than the copper.
Two days, Lira had given him.
One of them was already gone.
The district had stopped testing whether he could run packages.
It had started testing whether he could survive being known.
