The scrape mark on the side door was thin, but it hit like a slap.

Kai found Lira in the laundry gap with her hood up and her arms locked tight. No basket. No chore cover. Just the tight set of her mouth and the kind of fear she was trying to bully into looking like anger.

"They’re paying the older boys," she said. "Not for talk. For a window. When I’m near the fence."

Kai stared at her and felt the last soft option catch fire and die.

Of course they were. Why fight clean when you could buy a scared orphan’s schedule for drinking money?

Look at her. Still showing up. Still acting like she gets a vote. That dress is doing criminal work under the fear breathing. I notice. I always notice. The System is going to be insufferable about this.

He held out his hand.

"Give me your hand."

Lira frowned. "Why?"

"Because I’m done letting them price you like leftover bread."

She hesitated, then put her hand in his. Cold fingers. A smear of ink still stuck to one nail. Kai triggered the Claim Mark.

The System lit up like it had been waiting with popcorn.

A brief, vicious flare of heat snapped between their palms and sank into her skin. Lira’s eyes went wide. Her emotional signature spiked hard — shock, heat, confusion, and a messy rush of something warmer she clearly wanted to disown.

Kai felt the link lock in under his ribs. Direction. Rough emotional state. A proprietary little thread the System was already licking its lips over.

He didn’t explain a damn thing.

Lira yanked her hand back and stared at it. "What was that?"

"Insurance. You’ll feel off for a day. Ignore it. Stay in the deepest rooms you can justify. No fence. No open ground. If something feels wrong in a way that isn’t just regular fear, hide and wait. I’ll know."

"That isn’t an answer."

"It’s the only one that doesn’t get you sold by the hour."

She looked like she wanted to hit him. Instead she exhaled hard and nodded once, sharp and shaken.

"One day," she said. "If nothing changes, I’m leaving the orphanage whether you have a plan or not."

"Deal."

She vanished inside. Kai stayed in the gap long enough to feel the new link settle — a low, constant awareness of her direction and the jagged shape of her nerves. The System chimed again, smug as ever.

[Bond Resonance Stable]

Host’s protective/possessive impulses are generating bonus efficiency.

Note: Host remains consistently on-brand.

On-brand. The magical degeneracy engine just called me predictable. Rude. Accurate. Fine.

He didn’t go back to any previous room. Patterns got people hunted. He paid for a different hole on a street he’d never used and left it locked.

Then he went looking for a messenger.

The South Cut needed to understand the soft target had grown a surcharge. Kai found one of the workhouse boys who’d taken money to watch the fence — older, already half-drunk off the advance, loitering near a canal cut like the world owed him change.

Kai didn’t talk first.

He used Concealment, the angle, and the kind of short, ugly leverage that didn’t require being stronger — just closer and meaner than expected. The boy hit the wall hard enough to rattle teeth. Kai pinned him there and leaned in.

"The girl is off the menu," he said, quiet and flat. "Anyone who touches her in the next day answers to me before they answer to the South Cut. Pass it on. If I have to repeat myself, I stop leaving people with working mouths."

He let go before it became a corpse. Messages traveled better on living tongues.

The boy scrambled away bleeding from the lip. Desire Sense tracked the panic until it faded into the lanes. No swarm followed. Not yet.

The System flickered one more time as Kai wiped his hand on his pants.

[Threat Broadcast Registered]

External perception of host shifting from ’useful runner’ toward ’problem’.

Recommend capitalizing on momentum.

Current Desire Points: 361

*From delivery boy to problem in under a month. Character growth. Mom would be so proud if she weren’t fictional and also disappointed.*

Kai moved before the South Cut could finish chewing on the message.

One day on the Mark.

One day before Lira’s new deadline.

A faction that just got told their cheap leverage bit back.

He walked into the darker lanes with the link to Lira humming under his skin and the System quietly counting every filthy, protective, possessive impulse like it was getting paid by the sin.

The old loops were done.

Now the district got to answer.
