The Mark did not stay quiet.

Kai woke with the link already active under his skin, a low, constant pull toward the orphanage walls and the jagged shape of Lira’s nerves. She was awake. Anxious. Still inside. The System had the decency to wait until he sat up before it started commenting.

Expected parameters. The floating pervert engine just called me basic. I preferred it when it only took points and stayed quiet.

He washed, dressed, and left the new room without lingering. Patterns were how people got found. The South Cut had received his message last night. Messages like that did not buy silence. They bought decisions.

Desire Sense caught the first decision two streets later.

Three signatures. Moving with purpose. Not the drunk workhouse boy from last night. Cleaner. Heavier. The kind of emotional colors that belonged to people who got paid to turn warnings into examples. They were sweeping the lanes near his old Miller Street room.

Kai changed direction without breaking stride. Concealment tight. The Mark pulsed once, feeding him a sudden spike of Lira’s tension as if she had felt the shift in his focus. The connection was getting nosier than he liked.

Of course it is. I branded the one girl in this district who keeps risking her neck for me and now my brain gets free updates every time her heart rate climbs. This is fine. Completely normal. Not going to become a problem at all.

He needed eyes on the orphanage without being seen. The laundry lanes were too obvious. He took a longer route through a row of boarded storage sheds that still gave him a partial view of the outer fence and the side door.

No scrape marks.

Good.

Then Desire Sense picked up something that was not good.

A single signature inside the orphanage grounds that did not belong. Male. Controlled. Patient. Moving along the inner edge of the laundry area like he had every right to be there. Not staff. Not an older orphan. The emotional color was too flat and professional for either.

Someone had already decided the warning was worth testing.

Kai felt the Mark react before he did — a sharp, proprietary spike that made his fingers curl. Lira’s signature was deeper in the building, still unaware. The intruder was drifting closer to the routes she would use if she left the deep storage rooms.

They didn’t even wait a full day. Rude. Efficient. I can respect the work ethic while still wanting to break something.

He had no clean way to enter the orphanage in daylight without creating a different kind of noise. Direct confrontation inside the walls would drag Miss Helga, the other orphans, and every watching eye into the mess. The South Cut wanted a reaction. Giving them a public one was the same as handing them a larger lever.

The System flickered.

Creativity. Right. Because nothing says creativity like a Rank E body and a bad attitude.

Kai moved.

He didn’t go for the intruder. He went for the side door and left two deep, deliberate scrape marks across the latch — the urgent signal — then faded back into the sheds and waited.

Inside, Lira’s signature jolted. She had felt the Mark react, or she had simply checked the door out of nerves. Either way, the urgent signal would send her deeper into storage instead of toward the fence. The intruder’s path adjusted a moment later, slower, as if listening for movement that never came.

Kai gave it ten long minutes. The foreign signature finally drifted back toward the main grounds and faded into the general noise of the orphanage. Not gone for good. Probing. Testing how much pressure the "claimed" warning actually carried.

The Mark hummed under Kai’s skin, feeding him the rough shape of Lira’s elevated fear and the stubborn edge that kept her from panicking completely.

She’s scared and still following the instructions. That shouldn’t be attractive. It is. The System is taking notes. I am taking notes. We are both going to hell in matching ledgers.

Kai left the sheds before the probe could turn into a second attempt.

He needed the South Cut to understand that testing the Mark had a cost higher than a single scared boy with a split lip. He also needed Rena to know the temporary protection she had offered was already being poked for weak points.

Most of all, he needed the remaining hours on the Claim to count for something cleaner than another street warning.

The link to Lira pulled at him with every step — direction, emotional weather, the low-grade heat the System kept attaching to every protective impulse. Eighteen hours had become something shorter the moment the South Cut sent a man inside the walls.

Kai turned toward the one person who could make the next escalation expensive for the other side.

Rena was not at the crates.

She was waiting in the shadow of the canal bridge he had used for the ledger job, as if she had already heard the district shifting around his name. Her pale eyes tracked him once, sharp and unreadable.

"You’re leaking intent," she said. "Whatever you did last night made the South Cut curious instead of cautious. Curious is worse."

Kai stopped in front of her.

"They sent someone into the orphanage this morning. Probing routes near the girl. I need the price on her raised before they decide the test was worth repeating."

Rena studied him for a long second. Desire Sense picked up calculation, mild irritation, and a thin thread of interest that had nothing to do with charity.

"You’re asking me to spend capital on a soft connection you marked without permission," she said. "That kind of request needs more than a good story. It needs value."

"What do you want?"

Rena’s scarred mouth pulled into something that was not quite a smile.

"There is a name on the list you stole that the South Cut is very interested in keeping quiet. A middleman who moves people, not packages. I want a conversation with him before they decide he is safer dead. You arrange the meeting. Alive. Talking. After that, I will make the orphan girl expensive enough that only the desperate or the stupid keep reaching for her."

The trade was clean in the way ugly trades always were.

Kai felt the Mark pulse once, as if Lira’s distant anxiety had spiked in answer to a threat she could not see.

He nodded.

"Where do I find him?"

Rena told him.

Then she left him standing under the bridge with the new job, the ticking Mark, and the clear understanding that the turning point had stopped being theoretical.

The South Cut had reached inside the walls.

Kai was about to reach back harder.
