The Mark had started bleeding into his pulse.

Kai felt Lira’s fear like a second heartbeat under his own — distant, jagged, still trapped behind orphanage walls. The System had stopped being subtle about it.

Eleven hours. A girl I branded without asking is scared enough that I can taste it from districts away, and the floating degeneracy engine is taking performance notes. Some men get legacies. I get this. Fine. I’ll make it work.

Rena’s middleman was named Kell. He moved people. Not packages. Not ledgers. People who didn’t want to be found, or people someone else didn’t want found. The South Cut used him when they needed bodies to disappear cleanly or reappear somewhere useful. Rena wanted him alive and talking before the faction decided silence was cheaper.

Kai found the first thread in a boarding den near the canal spur — a woman with a burned wrist who owed Kell a favor and hated him enough to sell the shape of his evening. Kell would be at a private card room above a rope warehouse after the eighth bell, collecting a debt in person. Light escort. Two men. He liked to watch the fear when the numbers came due.

Kai paid for the name with coin and a promise that the woman would not see his face again. Then he moved.

The warehouse sat in a row of similar buildings, lantern light leaking through the upper shutters. Desire Sense picked up four signatures inside — Kell, two hard emotional colors that belonged to muscle, and a smaller, tightly contained spike of terror that was probably the debtor. Kai circled once, mapped the exits, and waited for the moment the fear spiked highest.

When it did, he went in through the rear stair.

Concealment got him to the door. Rank E reinforcement and a short iron bar got the latch open without announcing him to the whole street. The card room was small, smoky, and already ugly. Kell — thin, neat, with the soft hands of a man who paid others to touch the dirt — stood over a kneeling debtor while two escorts watched the corners.

Kai didn’t give them time to reassess.

He hit the nearest escort first, short and brutal, enough to drop him into the wall and take him out of the math. The second man turned fast, but the room was too small for clean movement. Kai used the angle, the iron bar, and the kind of mean precision that didn’t care about fairness. The second escort went down hard and stayed there, breathing but finished.

Kell had a knife in his hand by then. The debtor had scrambled into a corner. The thin man’s eyes were wide, calculating exit routes that no longer existed.

"Rena wants a conversation," Kai said. His voice came out flatter than he expected. The Mark pulsed once, hard, as if Lira’s distant anxiety had spiked in answer to the violence. "Alive. Talking. You can walk out with me, or I can make the walking part optional."

Kell looked at the two men on the floor, then at Kai, and made the smart choice. The knife lowered.

"You’re the orphan runner," Kell said quietly. "The one who marked a girl and started growling at the South Cut. You’re going to get her killed."

Something cold and proprietary ripped through Kai’s chest hard enough that the System chimed in pure delight.

No shit.

"Talk," Kai said. "While you still have the teeth to do it."

He marched Kell out the back and through three lanes of darkness before the man tried to bargain. Names. Routes. The South Cut’s current interest in soft leverage. The fact that someone higher than street runners had already asked whether the claimed orphan girl was worth a direct extraction before the Mark expired.

Kai listened, filed everything, and kept the iron bar visible enough to discourage sudden courage.

By the time he delivered Kell to the meeting point Rena had given him — a blacked-out boat shed near the lower canal — the Mark had burned down to single digits and Lira’s emotional signature had gone thin and sharp with exhaustion and fear.

Rena was waiting with two of her own people. She took one look at Kell, then at the blood on Kai’s sleeve, and nodded once.

"Alive. Talking. Acceptable."

She gestured. Her people took Kell inside the shed. Rena stayed in the open long enough to meet Kai’s eyes.

"The girl is expensive now," she said. "Expensive enough that most of the South Cut will look for easier handles. A few will still be stupid. Stupid people are your problem. You have until the Mark runs dry to decide whether she stays in that orphanage or becomes something the district can’t reach as easily."

She left him with that.

Kai stood alone on the canal stones with the link to Lira screaming under his skin and the System quietly counting every filthy, possessive, terrified impulse the night had fed it.

Three hours. A claimed girl who’s been scared for a full day because of me. A faction that now has a personal reason to hate my face. And a System that’s one step away from asking whether I want to propose. I need to move.

He moved.

The orphanage walls looked the same in the dark. The side door did not. Two deep scrape marks had been cut into the latch hard enough to scar the wood. Urgent.

Kai’s blood went cold.

He was through the gap and into the laundry shadows before the next breath finished. Desire Sense slammed into a mess of signatures — Lira’s, bright with terror and defiance, and two others that did not belong inside the walls. Closing.

The Mark had almost no time left.

Kai ran toward the deep storage rooms with the iron bar in his hand and the clear, ugly knowledge that the South Cut had decided to stop testing.

They had come for her while the claim still held.

And he was already too close to stop.
