Kai woke first.

Morning light cut a thin line across the counting-house floor. Lira was still asleep on her stomach, one arm tucked under the thin pillow, the blanket kicked down to her waist sometime in the night. The curve of her back dipped clean into the rise of her hips. The blanket had lost the war against gravity.

Kai stared.

Then he stared a little more.

Oh great Goddess of Boobs, I have been your faithful servant. I have offered tribute in thought and in deed. I have never once questioned your divine proportions or the sacred doctrine of the upper path.

His eyes tracked the line of Lira’s spine down to where the blanket failed.

But this morning you test me. This magnificent, traitorous ass is leading me astray. I feel the pull of the heretic cult. The Ass Worshippers are singing in my blood. Forgive me, Goddess. I am weak. I am but a man. Do not smite me for considering conversion.

Lira shifted. Made a small sound. Reached down without fully waking and dragged the blanket back up over herself in one sleepy motion.

Kai composed his face.

She blinked awake a few seconds later, saw him already watching, and narrowed her eyes.

"You’re doing the face."

"What face."

"The one that means you were thinking something disgusting before I opened my eyes."

"I was praying."

"To what."

"Higher powers."

Lira sat up, keeping the blanket in place, and gave him a look that said she was choosing not to investigate further for the sake of her own peace.

"Good morning," Kai said.

"Idiot."

She almost smiled. Then the day settled back onto both of them and the small warm space of the morning started to cool.

---

Rena sent for him before midday.

The message was short. A location and the word *now*. Kai went. Lira came with him. The streets felt different. South Cut threads and Quiet Ones still showed on Desire Sense, but they held farther back than before. People looked once and looked away.

Rena had a thin folder open on the table.

"You delivered the maps. Clean enough." She did not waste time. "Counting house is yours for the rest of the week. After that we renegotiate."

Kai waited.

"I’m offering steady work," Rena said. "You take jobs when I call. You don’t work against me. In exchange you get ground, warning when someone pays for your head, and cover that keeps the Quiet Ones from treating you like loose cargo." Her eyes moved to Lira once. "Both of you. She’s already in the file."

Lira spoke.

"And if we say no?"

"Then you keep renting rooms one crisis at a time." Rena closed the folder. "You’ve stopped being cheap to kill. That makes you expensive to leave alone. Think about it. You have until the week ends."

She dismissed them with a short wave.

---

They were three streets away when Sera found them.

She fell into step on Kai’s other side without ceremony.

"She offered you the leash," Sera said. "You’re going to take it."

Lira’s posture shifted.

Kai kept walking.

"What do you want?"

"Clarity. The Quiet Ones moved me from useful to associated. That happens when you share cellars with people who don’t die on schedule." Sera glanced at him. "You’re about to become a fixed point under Rena. Fixed points draw attention. I need to know if standing near you is still temporary."

"And if it isn’t?"

"Then I change the distance." She stopped at the next junction. "I’m not your enemy. I’m not your partner either. We solved one problem together. The next ones might not overlap. I prefer to know that early."

She left without waiting for an answer.

Lira watched her go.

"She’s setting her price."

"Or her exit."

"Same thing." Lira started walking again. After a few steps she added, quieter, "Rena’s offer is real. Ground is real. I’m not interested in dying over pride. If the leash keeps us breathing, we take it."

Kai looked at her.

"We."

"Stop acting surprised by that word."

They turned toward the counting house. Behind them the district kept adjusting to the fact that the orphan who should have died was being offered permanent placement. South Cut would recalculate. The Quiet Ones would keep watching. Sera would hold her distance until the numbers changed.

Kai’s name carried weight now.

Rena had put terms on the table.

Sera had drawn a line.

Lira had chosen *we* without hesitation.

The next pressure would not come from the street.

It would come from the System.

Kai could already feel the shape of it waiting.
