The canal market was louder than it needed to be.
Kai cut through the edge of it with his collar up and Desire Sense half-open, the way he had learned to walk when the district started recognizing his face.
A woman selling dried fish shouted prices at no one in particular. A boy with a cut lip tried to pick a pocket and got his wrist nearly broken for the attempt. Ordinary noise. Ordinary dirt. The kind of street that did not care whether you were rising or drowning.
He was supposed to be checking a rumor about Quiet Ones movement near the eastern warehouses. Instead he found himself stopping at a narrow stall he had used once, weeks ago, when he still paid for information in copper he could not spare.
The old woman behind it looked up and squinted.
"You’re the one who bought the wrong map and still lived."
"I bought the right warning. The map was a bonus."
She made a dry sound that might have been a laugh and pushed a folded scrap across the wood.
"South Cut’s paying for eyes on you. Not blades. Not yet. Quiet Ones are quieter than usual, which means they’re planning. That’ll be three copper."
Kai paid. She took the coins with fingers that had been doing this longer than he had been alive in either life. He had met her the second week after the orphanage, when he still thought information could be clean. She had sold him a lie and a truth in the same breath and told him that was the only honest rate in the lower district. He had not forgotten.
He moved on.
The scrap said little he did not already know. He folded it into his pocket anyway and turned down a quieter lane, toward the counting house, toward Lira, toward the small stretch of borrowed peace they were still allowed to pretend was stable.
The System opened without warning.
[Main Objective Issued]

Recommended candidate proximity detected
Kai stopped walking.
A cart nearly clipped him. The driver cursed. He did not hear it properly.
Fourteen days.
The text sat at the edge of his vision like it belonged there.
He started moving again because standing still in an open lane was how people got remembered by the wrong eyes. His hands were steady. His stomach was not.
Of course. The second I have something that isn’t pure survival, it wants more. Not a suggestion. A requirement. Claim another woman or start losing what I already paid for in blood.
The white room tried to surface.
Chair. Endless white. That smile with no teeth. The question.
Something in his head shoved it back down before the memory could finish forming. Hard. Wrong. Like a door slammed from the other side.
Kai exhaled through his teeth and kept walking.
Sera.
The name arrived too fast.
Scar. Dry voice. The way she had moved in the cellar without waiting for permission. The way she looked at problems like they were prices. She was already close. Already under the same Quiet Ones attention. Already the nearest piece the System could point at.
Would I mind?
The honest answer came uglier than he wanted.
No. Not really. That’s the problem. She’s sharp. She doesn’t flinch. She’s got that mouth and that timing and the kind of body that stays ready for a fight.
If the System needs a second claim and she’s standing right there, the part of me that has always been trash is already doing the math. Already imagining the weight of her, the sound she might make, the way she’d probably look at me afterward like she was updating a ledger.
He turned a corner harder than necessary.
And I barely hesitated.
That landed worse.
Lira is in the counting house right now. She used the word we like it was already decided. She got jealous in that quiet way that cuts deeper than yelling. She told me to remember the part that matters. She stayed. She chose this. And the first thing my head does when the System says "second claim" is run the numbers on another woman without even choking on it.
Self-hatred sat hot under his ribs.
Some second chance. Same garbage instincts. Different world. I should be sick about this. I should be fighting the objective harder. Instead I’m already thinking about how to start something with Sera without looking like the exact kind of man Lira should have left bleeding in a storage room.
A South Cut runner crossed the street ahead of him and kept going. Saw him. Did not stop. Caution. Not peace.
Kai climbed the counting-house stair with the System text still burning at the edge of his sight.
Lira was inside.
She sat near the window with a half-mended strap across her knees, afternoon light cutting across her hands. When he entered she looked up, and for a moment her face was open in the way it only got when the door was bolted and the street could not reach them.
"You’re back early."
"Market rumor was thin. Quiet Ones still measuring. South Cut paying for sightings."
She nodded and went back to the strap. Ordinary. Small. The kind of peace the district almost never allowed.
Kai stood there and felt the objective settle behind his sternum like a second pulse.
She doesn’t know. She can’t know. Fourteen days to start a claim on someone else without destroying this. Without explaining the real reason. Without watching her face change when she realizes the man she stayed for is already calculating the next one.
Lira glanced up again.
"You’re doing the face."
"What face."
"The one that means something is wrong and you’re deciding how much of it I get to hear."
Kai met her eyes.
The white room pressed once more against the inside of his skull. The same unnatural pressure crushed it back down before the smile could fully return.
"I’m still sorting it," he said.
Lira held his gaze a second longer, then returned to the strap like she was choosing to allow the half-answer for now.
Outside, the district kept its noise.
Inside, the System counted days.
Kai sat against the wall and stared at the floorboards between his feet while the number fourteen burned quietly through everything he had left that was worth protecting.
He did not feel like a man who had been given a second chance.
He felt like a man who had been given just enough rope to hang the only good thing he had managed not to ruin yet.
