The pass list did not resume right away.

It hung on the pillars in incomplete white light while officials moved through the arena with slates and batons. Candidates who were already listed stood in loose clusters, bleeding and quiet. Candidates who were not watched the empty lines like the mountain itself might appear there if they stared hard enough.

Kai stood between Lira and Sera with his name still dark.

Under the cut. Held. Not collected. Not safe.

An official with a review slate stopped in front of him and did not look impressed.

"Voss. Unaligned. Seam violation. Arena intervention. Score below line at horn." The man tapped the slate. "Held for judgment."

Lira’s grip on Kai’s sleeve tightened until her knuckles went white.

Sera’s voice was flat.

"He was above before the intervention."

"I’m aware of the sequence," the official said. "So is the captain."

He moved on.

Around them the list kept posting other names in small bursts. A green-dull survivor from the first trial. An Iron-track girl who had never looked at Kai once. The clan bastard’s remaining retainer, late and scowling. Each new line made the dark space under Kai’s row feel louder.

Held for judgment. Fancy words for: we have not decided if saving her was a crime.

He could still feel the penalty ticks in his teeth. The seam. The run across the bowl. The whip-blade. Lira’s throat under it. His score falling through the floor while the System’s correction burned out of his blood.

Lira spoke without looking at him.

"If they strip you—"

"They won’t."

"You don’t know that."

"No," Kai said. "I don’t."

Sera watched the raised mark where Veylan stood.

"If they strip him, we still walk north," she said. "Recommendation or not. We find another door."

Lira’s jaw flexed.

"There’s no other door."

"There’s always another door," Sera said. "They’re just uglier."

Kai almost smiled. It died before it reached his mouth.

Ugly doors. Yeah. My whole life is ugly doors. Rena’s seal was an ugly door. This meat grinder was an ugly door. Choosing her in front of the whole board was the first clean thing I’ve done in months and it might be the one that kills the mountain for me.

Veylan raised his hand again.

The arena noise dropped in pieces.

"Final holds," Veylan said. His voice carried without strain. "Three names under review. Two resolved by score recovery after secondary marks. One resolved by captain’s discretion."

He did not look at Kai when he said it. He did not need to. Half the surviving field already knew which dirt-born idiot had crossed an arena under penalty light.

An official read two names Kai did not care about. Both listed. Both sagged with relief.

Then Veylan’s gaze found him.

"Kai Voss."

Kai stepped forward on legs that did not feel finished with shaking.

"You broke zone integrity," Veylan said. "You accepted a score strip. You intervened in a lawful elimination attempt on another candidate. The board’s function is individual merit. Explain why I should not collect you."

The question sat in the dust between them.

Kai could have talked about anchors. About systems. About recommendation seals and lower-district math. None of that belonged in this man’s mouth.

He said the only true thing he had.

"She was going to die or snap. I could reach her. So I did."

A murmur moved through the listed candidates. Someone laughed once, short and mean. The clan bastard’s smile sharpened.

Veylan studied him.

"That is not merit. That is attachment."

"Yeah," Kai said. His voice came out rougher than he wanted. "It is. If the academy only wants people who can watch a name go blank at arm’s length, I’m not your candidate. List me or don’t. I’m not going to apologize for the run."

Lira made a small sound behind him. Sera said nothing.

Veylan held the silence long enough that Kai’s cracked band felt heavier.

Then the captain nodded once, almost to himself.

"Nightfall Royal Academy is not a charity for sentimental fools," Veylan said. "It is also not a factory for perfect cowards. You entered above the line. You fell under it to preserve another candidate who still stands. Your score is garbage. Your decision was public. Public decisions teach the field."

He lifted two fingers.

"Listed. Bottom margin. You will enter the mountain with nothing to spare. Stay soft up there and the academy will finish what this yard started."

White light wrote Kai’s name onto the pillar.

Late. Thin. There.

Kai’s breath left him in a single ugly rush.

Lira’s forehead dropped against his shoulder for half a second, hard enough to hurt, then she pulled back like the contact had been an accident. Sera’s mouth tilted — not a smile, just the acknowledgment of a math problem that had resolved in their favor.

Around them the final names locked. Officials began calling the listed into a column. Unlisted survivors were turned toward collection lanes with batons and empty expressions. Someone near the rim snapped a band out of pure delayed panic and vanished in a flare that no longer mattered.

Veylan was already done with them.

"North gate opens at the hour. Listed candidates only. The academy sits in the mountains above Nightfall. What you were before this yard does not walk through with you. What you do after it will."

The north gate seals cracked on iron rails.

Cold air came down from the mountain path beyond — cleaner than the bowl, thinner, carrying stone and pine and the faint metallic taste of a place built to sort people until nothing soft remained.

Kai stood with Lira on his right and Sera on his left, all three names on the board, all three still bleeding, and looked at the path that Rena’s seals had bought with a meat grinder.

Bottom margin. Nothing to spare. Fine. I’ve been soft and scared and stupid the whole way through and I’m still standing. The mountain can take a number.

He took the first step toward the north gate.

Behind them, the Crucible’s arena kept its bodies and its flares and its lessons.

Ahead of them, Nightfall Royal Academy had finally learned their names.

The selection was over.

The real sorting had not even started.
