The column of listed survivors left the Crucible at the hour and did not look back.
Kai walked with Lira on his right and Sera on his left, all three of them still carrying the bowl on their skin. Cuts. Bruises. A cracked forfeit band that an official had finally cut off his wrist at the gate and tossed into a bin like scrap. The mountain path started where the north seals ended — wide stone at first, then narrower as it climbed away from Nightfall’s outer ring.
Behind them, the capital’s edge spread out under afternoon light.
Nightfall was not pretty from this angle. It was huge. Layered. The outer ring they had camped in was warehouses and testing yards. Beyond that, the city rose in stacked tiers toward a brighter center — pale walls, crowded roofs, the thin glitter of a river cutting through. Smoke. Bells. The faint pressure of too many ranked people living in one place. The Crucible grounds sat on the capital’s shoulder like a scar the empire did not bother to hide.
Ahead, the road bent into pine and rock.
The academy was not in the city.
It was above it.
---
They walked for hours before anyone spoke about anything that mattered.
Officials led the column at a steady pace. No stretchers for the walking wounded. If you could stand on the list, you could climb. Candidates dropped into muttering clusters. Clan colors found each other. Unaligned dirt kept to the edges. Kai stayed between his two and watched the path switchback up the first real slope.
His chest still pulled when he breathed. Lira’s thigh had been wrapped with a strip of someone’s spare shirt. Sera’s side was stiff; she did not let it show in her stride.
Bottom margin. Nothing to spare. Still here. She’s still here. Both of them. The board almost took me for that and I would do it again. That is the problem with me. I keep discovering the same problem and calling it a personality.
Lira broke the quiet first.
"That sword work," she said. "The one who had me at the rim. It wasn’t just better. It was... shaped."
"Style," Sera said. "They train patterns. Not just swings."
Kai nodded once.
"Tovin called his Linear Bind. Iron foundation. The one in the arena used something else. Shorter. Snappier. The System—" He caught himself. "I picked up pieces under pressure. I still don’t know the real names for half of it."
Lira glanced at him.
"You fought like you suddenly understood him."
"I understood one correction," Kai said. "Not the language. There’s a whole language to this and we’ve been speaking alley the whole time."
Sera’s mouth tilted.
"Alley kept us alive."
"Alley almost got her throat cut."
Lira’s shoulder brushed his. Not soft. Just there.
"I’m still breathing."
"Yeah," Kai said. "That’s the only reason I am too."
They walked farther. The capital dropped below the trees in pieces. Nightfall’s center caught the sun and threw it back once — a brief, cold flash of glass and pale stone — then the road turned and the city became a rumor under the mountain’s shoulder.
---
By late light the path changed.
The dirt and pine gave way to cut stone again, wider, older, set with marks that were not Crucible paint. Empire seals. Academy seals. The road no longer felt like a trail. It felt like a throat leading into something that had been designed to be approached on purpose.
Then the trees opened.
Kai stopped walking without meaning to.
Nightfall Royal Academy did not sit on the mountain like a castle glued to a peak.
It was the mountain.
The first thing he saw was the gate spine — a vertical cut of pale stone rising out of the cliff face, two hundred feet of carved wall with a dark mouth at its base and banner-arms high above. Behind it, the structure climbed in broken terraces: courts and bridges and dorm wings driven into the rock, connected by spans that looked too thin for the drop under them. Some levels glowed already with evening light. Others were just shadow and window slits. Highest of all, a cluster of spires clung to the summit like a second, sharper mountain grown out of the first.
A lower bridge path led from their road to the gate spine, hanging over a gorge so deep the bottom was only sound — water somewhere far below, moving through black stone.
Candidates in the column made noise again for the first time since the bowl. Not cheer. Not relief. The sound people made when the thing they had paid blood for finally became real enough to scare them in a new way.
Lira’s voice was quiet.
"That’s not a school."
"No," Sera said. "It’s a sorting machine with beds."
Kai’s hands hung useless at his sides.
Of course it’s beautiful. Of course it’s terrible. Of course Rena pointed us at this like it was a job promotion. Look at it. It eats cities for breakfast and calls the leftovers merit.
They crossed the bridge in single file where the path narrowed. Wind came up the gorge cold and clean. Kai kept his eyes on Lira’s back and Sera’s stiff shoulders and not on the drop, because the drop did not care about dual anchors or cracked bands or bottom margins.
At the far end, the gate spine’s dark mouth waited.
And someone was already standing in it.
Not an official from the Crucible. Different coat. Darker. Academy cut. A silver thread at the collar that was not Veylan’s. The person was tall, slim, and still in a way that made the climbing column slow without being told.
When Kai got close enough, the figure’s eyes moved across the listed survivors, paused on clan colors, paused on the spear girl’s clean posture, then stopped on him.
On Lira.
On Sera.
A faint recognition that was not friendly.
"Unaligned three," the figure said. Not loud. Clear enough. "Bottom-margin boy. The stubborn knife. The quiet one." A thin smile that did not reach the eyes. "The yard already sent word. Welcome to the mountain. Try not to waste the climb."
Kai felt the old lower-district instinct rise — Desire Sense, exits, the shape of a threat that had learned their names before they learned its.
Behind the figure, the gate spine opened into Nightfall Royal Academy’s first court, and the real sorting, at last, had a door.
