The seventh bell tolled across the lower district like a tired complaint.
Kai found the Rusted Mug by following the smell of spilled ale and fried onions. The tavern sat hunched between a boarded-up chandler’s shop and a narrow alley that reeked of piss. A wooden sign hung crooked above the door, the painted mug so faded it looked more like a bucket. Light and noise spilled out every time someone shoved the front door open.
He circled around to the back entrance as instructed.
Rena was already there, leaning against the wall with one boot planted on the brick. The cloak was gone. Up close, without the extra fabric, the fitted leather made it very clear she actually had a body under all the threat. Compact. Toned. The kind of figure that came from work instead of vanity. A narrow waist. Hips that filled the leather breeches properly. The scar at her mouth caught the lantern light whenever she shifted.
Kai’s brain, helpful as ever, immediately started taking notes it had no business taking.
Older. Stronger. Looks like she could break me in half and might enjoy it. Chest isn’t huge but the leather doesn’t hide the shape. Thighs look mean. That scar makes the rest of her face sharper. Dangerous. Probably filthy in the ways that matter.

Visual assessment of high-threat target.
Host’s attention lingered on multiple regions. Efficiency: High.
He told the System to shut up and stepped into the lantern light.
Rena’s pale eyes flicked over him. "You ditched the stick. Good. You still look like a stiff breeze would fold you, but at least you don’t look like a child playing soldier."
"I’ll take the compliment."
"It wasn’t one." She pushed off the wall and jerked her chin toward the back door. "Inside. You stand where I tell you. You keep your eyes open. You don’t speak unless I ask you a question. If someone tries to go through that door who isn’t the man I’m waiting for, you tell me. Quietly. Clear?"
"Clear."
The back hallway of the Rusted Mug was narrow and smelled like old beer and wet wood. A single lantern hung from a nail, throwing more shadows than light. Rena positioned Kai against the wall beside a heavy oak door, then leaned on the opposite side where she could see both him and the short corridor leading to the main room.
Minutes stretched.
Kai used the time the way he always had in his old life—by letting his mind run filthy and analytical at the same time.
Desire Sense picked up muted signatures from the main tavern: drunken warmth, irritation, a couple of low-level lust spikes that felt transactional more than passionate. Nothing focused on him. Rena’s signature stayed steady and cool, with occasional thin spikes of vigilance.
He found himself watching the way she stood. Weight balanced. One hand never far from the knife at her belt. The leather of her pants creased along the curve of her ass when she shifted her stance. The short black hair left the back of her neck bare. There was a small mole just under the hairline.
I am supposed to be watching the hallway and instead I’m cataloguing a mole on a woman who would probably gut me for staring too long. Priorities remain intact, I see.

Sustained observation.
Rena’s voice cut through the quiet, low enough that it wouldn’t carry. "You’re thinking loud enough I can almost hear it."
Kai glanced at her. "Occupational hazard."
"What occupation is that? Professional orphan?"
"Something like that."
She studied him for a moment, then looked back down the hall. "Most people who take jobs like this do it because they’re hungry or desperate. You smell like both, but your eyes don’t match. You’ve got the look of someone who’s already decided he’s the main character."
Kai almost laughed. "That obvious?"
"Only to people who’ve seen it before." Her scarred mouth twitched. "Try not to die before the night’s over. I don’t like training new help twice."
Before he could answer, footsteps approached from the main room.
A man in a decent gray coat appeared at the end of the hallway. Middle-aged. Soft around the middle. The kind of face that belonged on a mid-level merchant who thought he was sharper than he was. He nodded once at Rena. She nodded back and opened the oak door without a word. The man slipped inside. Rena shut it and resumed her post like nothing had happened.
Kai filed the face away.
More minutes passed. The muffled sound of voices leaked through the door—too low to make out words, but the tone stayed measured. No shouting. No sudden crashes.
Rena spoke again without looking at him. "You left the orphanage this morning and already took a job from a stranger. That’s either impressive or suicidal."
"I’m experimenting with both."
"Keep experimenting like that and the district will eat you." She tilted her head slightly. "There’s a girl at the orphanage. Brown hair. Always carrying a copied magic book. She watched you leave earlier."
Kai’s attention sharpened.
Lira.
Rena’s pale eyes slid toward him, catching the reaction. "Thought so. You’ve already got your eye on something. Cute. Try not to get her killed by association. The lower district isn’t gentle with soft things."
The warning landed heavier than Kai expected.
Before he could decide how to answer, the oak door opened. The soft man in the gray coat stepped out, face carefully blank. He walked past them without a word and disappeared toward the main room. Rena waited three full breaths, then pushed off the wall.
"That’s it," she said. "Job’s done."
She tossed him something underhand. Kai caught it on pure reflex. Three copper coins, still warm from her hand.

Received payment from target "Rena."
Minor bond progress recorded.
"Meal’s out front if you want it," Rena said. "Sit in the corner, eat fast, and don’t follow me when I leave. If I need you again, I’ll find you."
She was already moving toward the alley door.
Kai closed his fingers around the coins and watched the way her hips shifted as she walked away, leather pulling tight with every step. The System helpfully noted the visual.
He exhaled through his nose and muttered under his breath.
"Yeah. You’re definitely going to be a problem."
Then he headed toward the smell of food, three copper richer, and already wondering how long it would take before the System pushed him to stop just looking.
