Lust Dominion: The Ultimate Harem System
Chapter 9: Hot Meal, Cold ThoughtsThe main room of the Rusted Mug was exactly as loud and greasy as the smell promised.
Low ceiling. Sticky tables. A long bar scarred by years of knives and boots. The air hung thick with smoke from cheap pipes and the sharp tang of fried onions. Most of the patrons looked like they had finished a long day of hard, poorly paid work and intended to forget it as quickly as possible. A few harder faces sat in the corners, the kind that measured exits the moment they sat down.
Kai kept his head down and claimed a small table near the wall, back to the corner the way every paranoid protagonist eventually learned to sit. He dropped one of the three copper coins on the table when a tired serving woman finally noticed him.
"Whatever the three-copper meal is," he said.
She grunted, took the coin, and returned a few minutes later with a wooden bowl of thick stew, a hunk of dark bread, and a chipped cup of something that claimed to be ale. The stew was mostly root vegetables and stringy meat in a greasy broth. It was the best thing Kai had tasted since waking up in this body.
He tore into it like a man who had been surviving on gray porridge and spite.
While he ate, Desire Sense drifted across the room on its own.
Most signatures were muted—fatigue, mild drunken warmth, low-grade irritation. A pair of dock workers two tables over carried the dull red of mutual dislike that would probably turn into a fistfight before the night ended. Near the bar, a woman in a low-cut blouse laughed too loudly at a merchant’s jokes. Her emotional signature flickered with practiced interest and quiet calculation. Transactional. The System labeled it Professional Opening – Low Value.
Kai’s gaze lingered a second longer than necessary on the way the blouse stretched when she leaned forward.
Nice shape. Soft. The kind of chest that would spill out of cheaper fabric. She’s working the room, not looking for a story. Still. The bounce is real.
[+3 Desire Points]
Visual focus on secondary target.
Host continues to demonstrate consistent priorities.
He snorted under his breath and went back to the stew.
Rena would probably break my fingers for staring like that. Lira would just look disappointed and go back to her book. I already have two completely different problems and I’ve been awake less than a day. Efficient.
The thought of Lira pulled his mind sideways. Quiet. Ink-stained fingers. The way she had watched him leave the orphanage without saying anything. The faint warm thread of curiosity Desire Sense had picked up from her earlier. She was still inside those walls, copying magic theory by hand because no one would pay for her testing. Soft in the ways that got people hurt out here. Sharp in the ways that might keep her alive if she ever got the chance.
Rena was the opposite. Scarred. Contained. The leather had hugged the curve of her ass when she walked away, and the short black hair left the nape of her neck bare like an invitation she would stab someone for accepting. Older. Stronger. The kind of woman who had already decided what she was willing to do and what she wasn’t. Dangerous in a way that made the System practically hum.
Kai chewed slower.
Two very different types. One still half-trapped in the orphanage with a stolen textbook. One who throws copper at orphans and walks into alleys like she owns the shadows. The System is going to want both. Of course it is. Degenerate Soul doesn’t do half-measures.
He finished the stew, used the bread to wipe the bowl, and sat back with the remaining two copper coins warm in his palm. Night had fully settled outside. Lanterns glowed behind dirty windows. The optional objective still sat quietly in the corner of his vision, waiting for confirmation that he had stayed out long enough.
A new line of text appeared without fanfare.
[Optional Objective Complete]
Host remained outside orphanage grounds until nightfall.
Reward: 30 Desire Points + Lower District Map (Partial → Intermediate).
Current Desire Points: 92
The map updated in his mind like someone unfolding a sheet of paper behind his eyes. Streets gained names. The Rusted Mug was marked. The orphanage. The dry fountain. Eastern Market Row. A few alleyways now carried warning tags—Unstable, Watched, Avoid after dark.
Useful.
Kai turned the two remaining coins over in his fingers and considered his options. Returning to the orphanage meant Garren and the thin mattress and Miss Helga’s tired eyes. Staying out meant finding a doorway that didn’t already belong to someone meaner than him. Neither option was good. Both were survivable.
He was still weighing them when Desire Sense spiked hard near the front door.
Warm. Focused. Familiar.
Lira stood just inside the entrance, rain-damp hair sticking to her cheeks, the copied magic booklet clutched against her chest like a shield. Her hazel eyes scanned the room once, found him, and narrowed with a mixture of relief and pure irritation.
She crossed the tavern floor with the determined stride of someone who had already decided she was going to be angry and was only looking for the correct target.
Kai watched her approach and felt the System lean forward with interest.
She left the orphanage after dark to find me. That’s either touching or incredibly stupid. Possibly both. The booklet is getting wet. Her dress is clinging more than it did this morning. Focus, you absolute disaster.
Lira stopped in front of his table, rain still beading on her shoulders, and looked down at him with the kind of quiet fury that did not need volume.
"You," she said, "are an idiot."
Kai met her eyes, felt the fresh pulse of Desire Points begin to tick upward, and smiled the small, unclean smile that had already started to feel natural.
"Good evening to you too," he said. "Pull up a chair. The stew’s terrible. You’ll love it."
