Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 529: Settle InAfter the man left, Quincy rushed over to Ronan Kendrick, giving him a mischievous look.
"Leniency for those who confess, severity for those who resist."
Ronan Kendrick glanced at him. "Idiot."
"Who are you calling an idiot? Evelyn, he insulted me."
Evelyn Ford slapped Quincy on the back. "Hurry up and carry Annie inside. We can talk later."
Evelyn Ford looked left and right. Seeing no one else around, she locked the villa’s main door from the inside.
When they entered the first-floor living room, Quincy was like a country bumpkin in the city, staring at the polished floors and bright rooms while exclaiming, "Wow, wow, wow!"
"I can’t believe a place this nice still exists. The wealth gap in Flumen is huge."
Even someone as composed as Ethan Dawson looked surprised.
"The water is clean! Holy shit, there’s even a water heater. We can take hot showers later. The three floors have nine rooms in total. This is amazing. The bedrooms have air conditioning and balconies, and there’s a fireplace on the first floor."
Quincy’s excited shouts echoed throughout the house. Ethan Dawson had taken the three men to a guest room on the first floor. Their ropes had been untied, but they didn’t dare try to run, not when Evelyn and her group all had guns.
Annie was placed on a first-floor sofa. After the ordeal of the past ten-plus hours, Evelyn was exhausted too. She lay down on the other end of the sofa, staring blankly into space.
Once Quincy and Ethan Dawson finished exploring all the rooms, they started unpacking the supplies in the living room.
"Let me see what we’ve got... This basket is vegetables, here’s the meat, over here are clothes and shoes... and there’s even toothpaste and toothbrushes. My God, they thought of everything."
"We’ve struck it rich overnight! I’m not dreaming, am I?"
Evelyn Ford snorted. "Were we that poor? Have I been mistreating you?"
Quincy grabbed a head of napa cabbage and used it to block Evelyn’s view. Seeing how cowardly he was, Evelyn rolled her eyes.
"Let me explain our current situation. Ronan Kendrick has already made an agreement with the base. They’re going to resolve the refugee camp crisis as soon as possible. We performed a great service, so this house is our reward from the base."
This was only half-true. Even though they were her own people, there were many things Evelyn didn’t plan on telling them, especially regarding Ronan Kendrick’s identity.
"The base’s Commander is that easy to talk to?"
"He’s the Commander, so of course he sees the bigger picture." Evelyn told them to move the supplies into the kitchen.
"Now that things are settled, when are we going back? Evelyn, why don’t we bring Mr. Graham and the others here to live with us? The island is quiet, but there are bodies floating by every day."
"That’s something to consider, but everyone’s exhausted today. Let’s rest first."
’Where they lived wasn’t important anymore. Since Rhys Chase and Ronan Kendrick had reached an agreement, living in Flumen would mean they were under his protection. Moving here wouldn’t be a problem at all.’
Evelyn chose a bedroom on the third floor, with Annie in the room next door. Ethan Dawson and Quincy would stay on the second floor, and the three men would temporarily stay on the first floor. After all, she still had a job for them. Before going to bed, Evelyn brought a box of medicine to their room.
"When can we leave?"
Evelyn stroked her chin. "Do you want to live, or do you want to die?"
The three men shivered. "We want to live."
"If you want to live, then you’ll follow orders."
"We’ll absolutely follow orders! What do you need us to do? Laundry and cooking, or murder and arson?"
Judging by their expressions, they seemed rather excited by the prospect.
Evelyn pinched the bridge of her nose. "Not so fast. If you don’t want to be tied up again, you’d better behave."
The three men nodded in unison. "We’ll definitely follow orders and behave ourselves."
Back in her third-floor bedroom, Evelyn took a comforter out of her space and spread it on the bed. Ronan Kendrick had already checked the room; there were no cameras or recording devices.
"Ronan, will that Rhys Chase guy hurt you?"
"He can’t hurt me. Don’t worry. We’ve already reached an agreement. He won’t make a move against me, and even if he did, you wouldn’t need to worry."
"About what Quincy said earlier, I think it’s worth considering. We had too many concerns before, which is why we chose to settle on the island. But since we can take the cabin with us, living here might not be a bad idea."
Ronan Kendrick chuckled softly. "You make the arrangements. I’ll go along with whatever you decide."
"All right, then. I’ll take Quincy back to the island tomorrow. After all, Mr. Lowell just had surgery. If they all agree to move here, I’ll bring them over."
"I’ll go back with you. Let Quincy stay here and take care of Annie."
Evelyn shook her head. "You probably have other things to take care of. Don’t worry, I’ll be quick. As for Annie, Ethan Dawson’s arm is injured, so he can stay at the villa and look after him."
Ronan knew she was stubborn; saying more would be pointless, so he could only relent.
"Be safe. Make it a quick trip."
"I know. I’m so tired. I’m going to get some sleep first. I’ll go get them after I wake up."
Evelyn only slept for five hours. When she woke up, she went to the second floor to tell Quincy they were returning to the island. Annie would be left in the care of Ronan Kendrick and Ethan Dawson.
Quincy was still half-asleep. "We’re not bringing Annie? Mr. Graham and the others would be so happy to see him."
"Annie’s injuries are too severe. He needs to stay in bed and rest for a while. Now hurry up and get ready. We leave in ten minutes."
"In such a rush?"
Evelyn shot him a glance. "You can sleep in the car. Hurry up. If you’re a man, stop dawdling."
Quincy scrambled out of bed. "Coming, coming!"
As Evelyn was about to leave the villa, Annie looked at her with teary eyes. Neither Ethan Dawson nor Ronan Kendrick knew how to take care of children. The two of them just standing there was enough to scare a kid to tears.
"Can you two try to be a little gentler? You’re both pulling such long faces, like someone owes you a fortune. Let me give you some quick training. The most important thing in childcare is patience. No hitting or scolding. You have to play games with him, tell him jokes, and coax him to sleep."
Ronan Kendrick looked at Ethan Dawson with a deadpan expression. "I have something to do. The task of babysitting is all yours."
Ethan Dawson looked at his arm, which was in a sling across his chest, and could only accept the daunting task.
"Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Annie."
However, the moment Evelyn and Quincy left, Ethan Dawson tried to force a smile to cheer Annie up, but only managed to scare him into crying.
In the end, with no other options, Ethan Dawson had to seek help from the three stupid thieves on the first floor.
Luckily, the three of them were more approachable than he was. Annie stopped crying as soon as he saw them. Ethan Dawson wiped the non-existent cold sweat from his forehead. ’Taking care of a kid is even harder than manual labor.’
"Your mission is to take care of him. If he cries again, you’re all dead."
Ethan Dawson stood at the door holding his gun. Under duress, the three men could only reluctantly take on the role of nannies.
’If they’d known it would come to this, they would have starved to death rather than become thieves.’
After Evelyn and Quincy left, Ronan Kendrick also left the villa.
Meanwhile, Evelyn and Quincy drove out of Flumen and arrived back at the island forty minutes later without incident.
"Mr. Vance, Mr. Graham, Wyatt! Evelyn and I are back!"
Quincy started yelling for everyone the moment he set foot on shore. Hearing his voice, Officer Graham and Miles Vaughn hurried out to greet them.
