Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 530: Picking Them Up"Why is it just the two of you? Where are Ronan Kendrick and Ethan Dawson?"
Officer Graham shone his flashlight down the path behind them, seeing no one else. He immediately grew tense. "Why didn’t they come back?"
"Mr. Graham, don’t worry. They’re fine," Quincy said, quickly adding the great news about finding Annie. "Come on, let’s go home first. I’ll tell you all about what happened these past two days once we’re inside."
"If it weren’t for Evelyn Ford and Ronan Kendrick, that pack of brats would have beaten Annie to death. He’s covered in injuries—there’s hardly an unbruised spot on him. His throat is so damaged he can’t speak, and he’s become incredibly timid. I have no idea how he managed to survive on his own."
After hearing this, Officer Graham and Miles Vaughn were both overjoyed and heartbroken.
"What about Serena Lynch and Chase Underwood?"
Quincy glanced at Evelyn Ford. "They... probably didn’t make it."
Hearing this, Officer Graham simply sighed and gently opened the cabin door.
As soon as they stepped into the cabin, everyone else gathered around. Zoe shot into Evelyn Ford’s arms like a little cannonball, clinging to her.
"Auntie, I missed you so much!"
Evelyn Ford ruffled her hair. "Auntie missed you too."
"Where are Ronan Kendrick and Ethan Dawson?"
Taylor Vance, helping Zion Lowell out of his room, didn’t see Ronan Kendrick or Ethan Dawson and asked anxiously.
"They’re still in Flumen. Quincy and I came back first. Everyone, please sit down. I have something to tell you."
Holding Zoe, Evelyn Ford walked to the living room sofa. Once everyone was seated, she explained the purpose of her return.
"The survival issues at the refugee camp will be resolved soon. I want to take everyone to live in Flumen."
The news was so shocking that everyone was stunned.
"We’re moving? If we go live in Flumen, will we have a place to stay?"
"We’ll be living in The Kestrel Villas in Flumen. The base has assigned us a house. It has three floors, so it’s big enough. What does everyone think?"
Evelyn Ford looked at Officer Graham and Taylor Vance. "The people living in The Kestrel Villas were all bigwigs before the apocalypse. Security there is tight, and we’ll have the base’s protection. We’ll be very safe."
Evelyn Ford’s words carried a lot of information.
"When do we leave?"
"We can leave immediately. Just pack your personal belongings. You can leave everything else in the cabin; I’ll pack it up and take it with me. Let’s leave the corridor and the outhouse here. The birds can use them as a perch."
Evelyn Ford took a sip of tea. "Anyone who doesn’t want to go to Flumen can stay here. It’s not far, only about an hour round-trip. In that case, I won’t pack up the cabin."
"I want to go with Auntie! I don’t want to be separated from Auntie!" Zoe clung to Evelyn Ford, her chubby little face scrunched up.
"Auntie, I have so much to tell you! It’s all stuff the little birds told me. Quick, ask me, or I’ll forget!"
Evelyn Ford gently squeezed Zoe’s round little cheeks. "Okay, what did the little birds tell you?"
"One little bird said the temperature has been rising recently, and something bad is definitely going to happen. It told us to be careful."
Evelyn Ford nodded. They had already noticed the rising temperatures.
"What else?"
"One little bird said its friends are leaving this place. It’s hard to find food now, and without the sun, they lose their feathers and die. They’re going to leave to find the sun somewhere else."
Evelyn Ford’s expression grew grim. ’The animals are starting a mass migration.’
"Zoe, you’re amazing. This is very important news. Is there more?"
"Yes, let me think... Auntie, my brain isn’t working right. I can’t remember that much. I need to think really hard."
Evelyn Ford chuckled. "No rush. Take your time."
"I remember! One little bird said there’s a mountain not far from here. But one day, it discovered the mountain had moved to a different place."
"How can a mountain run away? Haha, Zoe, was that little bird just teasing you?"
Zoe was very serious. "No, Daddy. The little birds would never lie to me. What they say is always true."
"It’s pitch-black outside now. The birds’ eyesight must be worse too. It’s normal for them to see things wrong."
Zoe still shook her head. "The little birds don’t need their eyes to know the mountain’s position has changed. They’re amazing."
Quincy wanted to say more, but Evelyn Ford cut him off.
"I believe Zoe. If the birds say the mountain’s position changed, it probably means the tectonic plates are shifting."
"Just in case, we can’t live separately. Listening to Evelyn is never wrong. Let’s go to Flumen. In any case, the base is there. If there’s any danger, the base is sure to have equipment that can detect it."
Evelyn Ford agreed with Officer Graham. "Exactly. We’ll all feel more at ease if we’re together. Besides, since the cabin can be packed up, we’re just moving to a new place. There’s no loss."
"I’m going with Evelyn either way, so let’s quit dawdling. The villa has everything, including nine rooms, each with a balcony and a bathroom." Quincy glanced at everyone. "Alright, it’s settled. Anyone who needs to pack, do it now. We leave in ten minutes."
Evelyn Ford looked at Quincy with amusement but didn’t contradict him.
The others all got up to pack their personal belongings. Evelyn Ford continued to drink her tea while holding Zoe.
"Mr. Lowell, how have you been the past two days? Have you felt any discomfort?"
Zion Lowell smiled. "Not at all. I feel better all over since the surgery. I’m not coughing up blood anymore either."
His complexion was indeed much healthier. Evelyn Ford checked his incision and saw that it was healing very well.
"You can stop the medication after another half-month. You also need to get some moderate exercise."
Zion Lowell nodded. "Okay, I’ll remember that. I’ll be sure to follow the doctor’s orders."
Once the others had finished packing, Quincy directed everyone out of the cabin. Evelyn Ford placed a large basin of wheat on the corridor. When an environment becomes unsuitable for survival, animals will migrate on a massive scale. They have wings and can fly dozens, even hundreds of kilometers in a day. Humans can’t. In the natural world, humanity is actually the vulnerable species.
After storing the cabin in her space, Evelyn Ford had Zoe relay a few messages to the birds, and then she led everyone away.
"Moving again."
They placed the raft in the water and slowly paddled to the opposite shore. Looking back at the island behind them, they could faintly make out the tall pine and cypress trees in the beam of a flashlight.
"Let’s go. To our new home."
Evelyn Ford drove, with Wendy and Zoe in the passenger seat. Taylor Vance and Zion Lowell sat in the back, while the others rode in the rear compartment of the vehicle.
"Auntie, why couldn’t we bring the little birds with us?"
"Because they’re about to leave this place. They’re going somewhere more suitable for them to live."
Zoe looked confused. "Will I ever see them again?"
"Of course you will."
The others in the back were also talking. They were all a little excited, and a little afraid, about Flumen, their new home, and the base.
"Auntie, are there a lot of people where we’re going?"
"Yes, there are a lot of people there."
"Wow, I’ve never seen a lot of people before! What if I can’t count them all?"
Evelyn Ford ruffled Zoe’s hair. "You’ll be able to count them when you’re older."
