"It’ll probably take a month or two to sort through all these supplies. There’s just so much. Why are there rocks?"

Earlier, when they were on the road, Evelyn had found a lot of nice-looking rocks in the Stone Forest and put them in her space.

"We’re keeping these rocks. They can be used as decorations."

Quincy clucked his tongue. "There are also a few bags of mud in here."

"That’s clay. It can be used to make pottery."

"Evelyn, you just let this motorcycle get squashed in a pile of clothes?"

The motorcycle was collected during a supply run, along with all these clothes, shoes, and bags scattered on the floor. Before the apocalypse, these were all luxury goods they couldn’t have afforded.

"These clothes can still be worn if we alter the style a bit. The quality is excellent. We should keep this pile of crocodile skin bags. If the economy ever recovers, they might be useful for trading."

Evelyn handed everyone a mask and gloves. Many of the items were covered with the carcasses of toxic moths and toads, so they had to be extra careful while cleaning.

"Evelyn, look at this steamer! There’s a dead snake inside."

It must have been collected during a supply run after the snake plague. They hadn’t checked it carefully at the time.

"Get the dead snake out. The steamer isn’t broken, so it’ll be usable after a good cleaning."

"There’s a rice cooker here too, and it’s full of moths. Ugh, it stinks... BLECH..."

Evelyn glanced over. "It’ll be usable after it’s cleaned. Stop dawdling and get to work."

Quincy suddenly shouted, "I’m rich! There’s a piggy bank here, and it’s pretty heavy! It must be full of money."

Everyone crowded around as Quincy smashed the piggy bank open. Inside, besides a pile of one-dollar coins, there were also quite a few hundred-dollar bills.

"I’m rich! So much money! Let me count it."

Quincy squatted right there on the floor and started counting the money. Evelyn and Ronan Kendrick stood watching him with their arms crossed. Officer Graham, annoyed at how slowly he was counting, helped him tally the coins.

"There are one hundred thirty-one one-dollar coins, ten fifty-cent pieces, and two dimes," Officer Graham announced, stacking the coins in neat piles.

"I’m done counting over here, too. A total of three thousand five hundred dollars," Quincy said, a little excited. "To think I’d see money again in my lifetime. I have to treasure this. Maybe in a few hundred years, this cash will be an antique."

Officer Graham chuckled. "What does it matter to you if it becomes an antique? You won’t be alive to see it."

The smile vanished from Quincy’s lips. "Yeah... I actually forgot I’m going to die."

"Give me the money. It’s confiscated." Evelyn dragged a box out from a nearby corner, wiped it clean, and put the money inside.

"Any money we find from now on goes in this box. We can’t spend it, but it has great sentimental value. We can keep it as a collection. This money represents an era; it has its own significance."

"There are so many bookshelves and books over here. Evelyn, did you rob a library?"

"I got them from residential buildings. They’re all dirty. Wipe them down, and when the sun comes out again someday, we can air them out."

No one would dare disrespect books. As they sorted, everyone was exceptionally careful and serious.

"There’s a photo album here."

"If you find any photo albums or picture frames, put them in this box." Evelyn dragged another box over. Quincy was cleaning a picture frame, and when Evelyn glanced at it, she saw a photo of a middle-aged couple and a little girl.

"Look at this family of three. They’re so good-looking."

"They are."

There were too many miscellaneous items to finish sorting in a short time. Evelyn told everyone to go out for a meal first and come back to work after a two-hour break.

"Tomorrow, I’m going to remove the bullets from Ethan Dawson."

"Is the surgery dangerous?"

Evelyn shook her head. "I’ve done a risk assessment. There shouldn’t be any issues. But because the three bullets are in different locations, the surgery might take several hours. I’ll have Ronan Kendrick bring you all in here tomorrow."

"Isn’t Ronan Kendrick supposed to be your assistant?"

"He doesn’t need to. Wendy can handle it." Wendy was already studying acupuncture and anatomy. She had a great aptitude for it and would be able to work independently in a few more years.

Evelyn took off her gloves and clapped her hands together. "Let’s go eat first. We can take a nap afterward and come back to work at two-thirty."

"Doesn’t Ronan Kendrick have to go to the base today?"

"He doesn’t."

Quincy stretched. "Sorting all this stuff isn’t easy. I suggest this afternoon we first get the cabinets and shelves set up, and then we can organize everything else onto them."

"Okay."

When they came out of the space, they heard Taylor Vance calling them for a meal from downstairs. As Evelyn walked down, she noticed there was an extra person in the house.

"Mr. Kendrick." Liam Sterling looked a little emotional upon seeing Ronan Kendrick.

"What are you doing here?"

Liam Sterling gave an awkward smile. "I came to drop off some vegetables and, while I was at it, bring a vehicle for you, Mr. Kendrick. Oh, right, Mr. Chase needs to see you. He said to go to the base when you have a moment."

Hearing this, Quincy leaned in. "Didn’t you just say he didn’t have to go to the base?"

"Something came up suddenly. Mr. Chase asked me to come pass on the message at the last minute. Mr. Kendrick, do you have time to make the trip?"

Ronan Kendrick nodded. "You can head back. I’ll go see him in two hours."

Liam Sterling breathed a sigh of relief at his words. "Okay, I’ll head back now, then."

Liam Sterling placed the car keys on the table, said a quick hello to Evelyn, and left swiftly.

Ronan Kendrick picked up the car keys and glanced at them, not refusing Rhys Chase’s arrangement.

"He delivered several crates of fruit, vegetables, and meat today. I don’t know what kind of fertilizer the base is using, but the vegetables they’re growing are gigantic."

"It has nothing to do with the fertilizer. The soil at the base is just better quality." Evelyn had already checked; there was no pork among the ingredients delivered today.

"Ronan Kendrick, be careful when you’re helping the base. Why don’t you take a couple of people with you?" Taylor Vance said, worried.

Ronan Kendrick smiled. "It’s fine. I’ll be back soon. There’s no danger."

After lunch, Evelyn took out the sewing machine, thread, scissors, rulers, and fabric, and placed them in the ground-floor guest room.

Joelle Finch and Wyatt Vaughn wanted to learn how to make clothes, so she let them practice on some ordinary fabric first.

The others couldn’t sit idle and wanted something to do, so Evelyn brought out two large baskets of American ginseng and red sage root for them to grind into powder.

Back in the bedroom, before Evelyn could say anything, Ronan Kendrick explained why Rhys Chase was looking for him.

"There’s a power struggle going on at the base. The longer the long night drags on, the smaller the chances of survival, so everyone wants to get their hands on the most supplies. Some people have already gone to the Southern Hemisphere to look for a new place to live. If Rhys Chase is looking for me, and it’s not about a supply run, he probably wants me to scout ahead with his men."

Evelyn grabbed Ronan Kendrick’s hand. "I won’t allow it. You can’t agree to that."

"Mm, I won’t do anything you don’t agree to. I wasn’t planning on it anyway. Don’t worry."

Evelyn nodded. "Either way, we can’t be separated."

"Okay. We won’t be."

After a nap, Ronan Kendrick drove to the base. Evelyn took Quincy and Officer Graham back into the space to continue working.
