Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 536: The OathEvelyn Ford felt a little awkward. No wonder Ronan Kendrick had given her such a complicated look when she woke up. ’Am I really that wild when I’m asleep?’
"Where did I kick you? Does it hurt?"
Evelyn wanted to check on him, but Ronan caught her probing hand. "It doesn’t hurt anymore."
Her kick had landed right on his vitals. He’d almost been ruined.
Seeing the lingering resentment in his eyes, Evelyn figured out where she must have kicked him and awkwardly rubbed her nose.
"I should probably still check on it."
"Don’t worry. It’s not broken. It still works."
Evelyn... She had no comeback for that.
—
"Quincy, go get Mr. Graham. I need you both to come to our room in a bit. I have something to discuss with you."
Quincy was mopping the first floor. When he heard Evelyn call him, he thought something serious had happened.
"Okay, Mr. Graham is in the garden. I’ll go get him right now."
Evelyn then found Ethan Dawson and told him about the bullet removal, advising him to prepare beforehand.
"There’s nothing to prepare. I trust your medical skills."
"We’ll remove the bullet tomorrow, then. Get a good rest today. Don’t eat anything for eight hours before the surgery. The procedure requires anesthesia, and under anesthesia, the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes. Anything in your stomach can flow back up into your esophagus and mouth, and if that happens, it can cause serious complications."
Ethan Dawson nodded. "I understand."
Just then, Quincy and Officer Graham came upstairs. Evelyn told Ethan Dawson to go back to his room to rest, then led the other two into her room.
"What happened? You look so serious."
"Ronan, what are you writing?" As soon as Quincy walked over, Ronan put away what he’d written.
"So secretive, not even letting me see." Quincy glanced around the bedroom. "You guys don’t have the heat on?"
Evelyn poured tea for them. "It’s not cold, why would we turn on the heat? Alright, let’s get to business."
"Hurry up and tell us! I can’t wait."
Seeing how fidgety Quincy was, Evelyn raised a hand as if to smack him. "Quiet down. I’m planning to bring you into the space. For now, you two must keep this a secret."
Quincy and Officer Graham exchanged a look, their expressions instantly turning serious.
"Evelyn, this is no small matter."
"First, we’ll run an experiment to see if I can even bring you in. Ronan and I are pretty busy. To be honest with you, we had a bit of a breakthrough recently, and the space has expanded quite a bit. The two of us definitely can’t manage it all alone. Are you willing to join us?"
Quincy suddenly dropped to his knees. He raised his right hand and swore a solemn oath. "I’m willing. I swear on my life to protect this secret until death and never betray your trust."
Officer Graham also moved to kneel and swear an oath, but Evelyn stopped him. He stood up straight and pledged solemnly, "I, Chester Graham, hereby swear to be forever loyal, to never betray you, and to never fail this trust. If I break this vow, may I die a horrible death."
Evelyn’s eyes reddened. She felt a bittersweet warmth spread through her heart.
Pulling Quincy to his feet, Evelyn patted his shoulder. "Yuri, you’d better work hard. If you slack off, I’ll let the wolves bite you."
Quincy’s face fell. "You wicked landlord! A regular Silas Hawthorne! You’re already planning to exploit my labor."
Both Officer Graham and Ronan Kendrick couldn’t help but laugh.
Evelyn grabbed both of their arms. Quincy, looking a little scared, clung tightly to Ronan with his other hand. If they didn’t have important business to attend to, Ronan would have loved to shank him.
"Close your eyes."
Evelyn silently thought, ’Enter,’ and in an instant, the four of them were inside the space.
"Alright, you can open your eyes now."
"This is the space? My god, this is like a whole other world."
"You can’t get in or out on your own. You’ll need me or Ronan to help you. But it’s just like the outside in here—there’s day and night, and there’s air, so you won’t suffocate."
Quincy was like a wild horse let off its tether, jumping and hopping around while letting out all sorts of strange cries.
"So does this mean we can live in here from now on?"
Evelyn shook her head. "There’s a time limit. Before, we could only stay for an hour."
"Are we going to start working now? Should we plow the fields first or water them?"
Evelyn pointed to the fourth region. "Besides farming, we also need to mine."
"Mine?"
Evelyn told them about the ore. "This just opened up. Ronan and I did a quick survey. The variety of ores here is incredibly comprehensive. There’s even a salt deposit and quartz sand."
"’When Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man...’ Evelyn, this ore can help us rebuild our home! I finally understand why I felt such a connection to you the first time we met. You’re the chosen one!"
Evelyn... Heh.
"Wasn’t it because you had your eye on my kayak?"
"But you do have a point. This ore will definitely be of great use."
But right now, there was no sign of the natural disasters ending. It wasn’t yet time for the ore to be put to use.
"So for now, let’s focus on farming and raising livestock. We need to expand our food stores as quickly as possible. You two should get used to life in here first. You might feel some discomfort when you first come in. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, tell me immediately."
Ronan Kendrick took out a planning chart, and the four of them held a short meeting inside the space.
Evelyn had them try to leave using just their thoughts. When that failed, they tried an experiment with their blood, but that didn’t work either. It seemed the space had already bound itself to a master; no one else could enter or leave freely.
"Evelyn, you have sewing machines and fabric here. We could take them out and have Joelle Finch and Wyatt Vaughn turn the fabric into clothes. And this cowhide could be made into shoes."
Evelyn nodded. "Mr. Graham, you handle the arrangements. You’re more meticulous. Quincy, you’ll be in charge of plowing. Four hours a day in here, how about it? Think you can handle it?"
Quincy put his hands on his hips. "Only four hours? You’re looking down on me! I’ll work at least ten. I’m claiming this plot of land. Nobody else better try and take it from me."
Evelyn gave him a thumbs-up. "You’re amazing."
"For now, it’ll just be the four of us working in here. If we get overwhelmed, I’ll arrange for others to come in after a while."
Quincy rubbed his chin. "We could ask Ethan Dawson and Miles Vaughn. Ethan is strong as an ox; it’d be a waste not to put him to work. He’s a decent guy, I trust his character. Miles is also good for manual labor, but he talks way too much and loves to lecture people."
"When it comes to talking too much, who could possibly beat you?" Evelyn twisted the knife without mercy.
"Let’s leave it at that for now. The four of us will start first. I trust the others’ character, but this is something I still need to consider carefully."
"Understood."
Evelyn finished writing the plan, then glanced at the storage area. "The storage area is a bit of a mess. Let’s organize it first. Clothes, food, medicine, daily necessities... everything needs to be sorted and stored by category."
The storage area looked like a chaotic warehouse, with everything piled together. Officer Graham and Quincy stared in shock at the mountain of supplies.
"I’ve organized it before, but there’s just too much stuff. It always gets messy again in less than two days."
Evelyn used to be a bit of a neat freak, always liking to have things stacked perfectly. But after the farming region was developed, she and Ronan were so busy with planting and fieldwork that they had no energy left to organize the storage area.
