Ronan Kendrick...
He could be even worse.
"Getting back to business, even though you and Rhys Chase have reached some kind of agreement, you still need to be wary of him. There’s something I haven’t asked you yet—did you give him your blood?"
Evelyn Ford’s expression turned serious. She’d thought of this long ago but never found the right chance to ask.
"Yes, just half a bowl."
"Was it just this once, or will you be giving it to him again in the future?"
"Once a year. Half a bowl each time."
"Ronan, don’t become anyone’s blood bank, not even mine. Your life is important. I know you’re very powerful, but I still worry someone will hurt you."
Thinking of his fate in her past life, Evelyn’s face instantly went pale.
"Okay, I’ll agree to anything. Don’t be scared. Nothing will happen to me."
"Besides him, are there any other gene-edited humans on his team?"
"I investigated after we made the deal. Besides him, there are no other test subjects, neither on his team nor at the base."
A vicious glint flashed in Evelyn’s eyes. "If he dares to bully you, I’ll turn him into Swiss cheese with the Gatling gun."
"My Felicity is so mighty. I knew you’d protect me."
"Of course. You’re my man, after all."
Remembering something, Evelyn cleared her throat. "Someone was exuding charm today. You even had a potential admirer show up."
Panic was written all over Ronan’s face. "That has nothing to do with me! I don’t know anything! Don’t be mad."
"Who said I’m mad? The young lady has good taste. Besides, she’s not the type who doesn’t know when to back off. Who told you to have a face that makes people fall in love at first sight? It’s hard not to like you."
Ronan’s ears turned a little red. "As long as you like it, that’s all that matters."
’Does he have to be so innocent?’ they’d been together for so many years, yet seeing his bright red ears was still enough to kill her.
Evelyn raised her hand and ruffled his hair. "Ahem... Go take a shower. You can sleep in tomorrow. You worked hard today."
"You’re operating on Ethan Dawson tomorrow?"
"Yeah, it’ll probably take several hours."
"I’ll be your assistant."
"No need. Wendy can help me. You get some rest."
Evelyn pushed him into the bathroom. "Stop dawdling and go shower."
—
At eight in the morning, when Evelyn woke up, Ronan was still fast asleep.
She stared blankly for two minutes until her mind was fully awake, then quietly got out of bed and tucked Ronan in.
Downstairs, Taylor Vance and Zion Lowell were practicing Tai Chi in the garden while Wendy learned alongside them. Seeing Evelyn emerge, Wendy darted over.
"Joy Ford, what time does the surgery start? Mr. Dawson is already prepared."
Evelyn looked at her, amused. "Ethan Dawson isn’t much older than me. Why do you call him ’uncle’?"
Wendy shivered dramatically. "He has a beard. I can’t bring myself to call him ’big brother’."
"The beard is his camouflage."
Wendy burst out laughing. "Does he transform?"
"He transforms when he shaves it off. The kind where we wouldn’t even recognize him."
Feeling playful, Wendy ran into the living room, made a spell-casting gesture at Ethan Dawson, and declared, "Demon, reveal your true form to your master, Monkey!"
Evelyn... ’This kid is nuts.’
Ethan Dawson played along perfectly. "Monkey, don’t hit me! It’s me, Pigsy!"
"You’re not Pigsy, you’re a Pig Demon!"
"I’m the real Pigsy! Who’s this little cookie, daring to impersonate me?" Quincy, carrying Zoe, came down the stairs, joining the joke before he even reached the bottom.
Evelyn thought she’d seen it all, but people fighting over who gets to be Pigsy was a new one.
Stretching her limbs and hearing a rooster crow from the villa next door, Evelyn yawned and walked inside.
"Ethan Dawson, are you feeling any discomfort?"
"No. What time does the surgery start?"
Evelyn glanced at the time. "It starts at ten. You haven’t eaten anything since last night, right?"
"I haven’t. How many hours will the surgery take, roughly?"
"Around five hours. There are three bullets, after all. Relax, don’t be nervous."
Quincy chimed in to comfort him, "Just think of it as taking a nap. You’ll wake up and it’ll all be over. Evelyn’s medical skills are excellent. You’re not going to die."
Evelyn shot Quincy a glare. "Shut up, you."
"Where’s Ronan? I’m going to tattle! Evelyn yelled at me again."
"Dad, get a grip. Uncle Ronan won’t help you," Zoe said, patting the back of Quincy’s hand. "Dad, be good and stop talking."
Quincy pretended to wipe away tears with a serious expression. "Okay, I’ll listen to you."
Evelyn and Ethan Dawson rolled their eyes in unison. Neither of them wanted to watch Quincy’s theatrics, so they went up to the temporary operating room on the third floor to discuss the surgical details.
"Evelyn, could I trouble you to make the stitches look nice later?"
Evelyn nodded. "Don’t worry, I’ll stitch a little bow tie for you."
"That won’t be necessary. No need to be so fancy."
Evelyn tutted. "See, you just don’t get it. The bow tie will bring you good luck. Why else does everyone like bow ties? It symbolizes a blessing, just like how we’re wishing you safety and health."
Ethan Dawson felt like something was off, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
Evelyn was just messing with him. Once he was on the operating table, there was no way she’d do something so ridiculous. As a doctor, she had a strong sense of professional ethics.
From ten in the morning until three-thirty in the afternoon, the long surgery finally came to an end. Evelyn and Wendy walked out of the operating room. Everyone had been waiting outside and rushed over the moment the door opened.
"Is Ethan Dawson okay?" Quincy was still very worried about him.
"Don’t worry, everyone. The surgery went smoothly. He’ll wake up once the anesthesia wears off, in about six or seven hours."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Ronan looked at Evelyn with concern. "You worked hard."
"I’m not tired."
Quincy patted Wendy’s shoulder. "Wendy was amazing too! You’ll definitely become a fantastic doctor one day. Great work, great work."
"Thank you, Mr. Quincy. I’ll do my best."
Taylor Vance carefully closed the door. "Alright, let’s go downstairs first and let Ethan get some rest."
Seven hours later, Ethan Dawson woke up. He was in good spirits and even took the initiative to greet everyone when he saw them.
"Thank you, my two heroines, for saving my worthless life," Ethan said weakly, cupping his hands in a gesture of respect toward Evelyn and Wendy.
"He can still joke. Everyone can relax now."
Wendy stared at Ethan Dawson for a few seconds, then burst out laughing.
"Mr. Dawson, your camouflage is gone!"
Ethan had actually shaved his beard before the surgery, but Wendy had only just noticed.
"Yep, I’ve revealed my true form."
Hearing this, everyone couldn’t help but laugh.
"You won’t be able to eat for a few more hours. Just hang in there."
Ethan Dawson nodded slightly. "It’s fine, I’m not hungry. Don’t worry about me. You should all go get some rest."
"Okay. I’ve placed an alarm button by your hand. If you feel any discomfort, just press it, and we’ll come."
Ethan Dawson’s eyes reddened. "Thank you all."
"Hah, we’re all family here. What’s with being so polite?"
