Devara immediately tightened his grip.
But then he noticed something far worse.
The other golden horses surrounding him were changing too.
One after another, their majestic forms began twisting into the same terrifying predator-like creatures.
Unlike Kandarpaasura, who had managed to get some distance from the herd, Devara had remained close to the lake.
He was now surrounded.
The creatures stood around him in a wide circle, their golden eyes fixed upon him.
Devara slowly looked around.
One was behind him and Two were to his left.
Several more stood between him and the golden lake.
And the stallion beneath him was still transforming.
Devara swallowed quietly.
"Well..."
He looked down at the creature he was holding.
"...this just became considerably more difficult."
The stallion suddenly threw its head backward.
Devara ducked as its newly formed jaws snapped dangerously close to his face.
He immediately pulled himself tighter against its neck.
The other golden predators began advancing.
Their claws scraped against the ground.
Their golden teeth gleamed.
Devara’s expression became focused.
He had to remember the rules.
No weapons.
No mount other than the horse he was trying to subdue.
He could not simply destroy these creatures.
He needed to mount one and control it.
But now the very horse he had been trying to tame had transformed into a predator, while the entire herd had surrounded him.
Devara looked at the creatures closing in from every direction.
Then he smiled faintly.
"All right."
His arms tightened around the golden predator’s neck.
The beast suddenly lunged forward.
Devara’s body shifted with it as the entire herd began moving.
The transformed golden predators suddenly lunged.
One came from Devara’s left, another from behind, while two more leapt directly toward him with their jaws wide open.
Devara immediately released the stallion’s neck and twisted his body, driving his fist into the first creature’s jaw with enough force to send it crashing sideways into the ground.
Before he could even recover his stance, another predator came from the opposite direction.
Devara turned and drove his heel into its chest.
BOOM!
The creature was thrown backward, rolling several times before regaining its footing.
"Stay down!"
Devara barely finished speaking before three more came at him.
He ducked beneath one snapping jaw, caught another by its neck and hurled it over his shoulder, then spun around and struck a third across the face.
Golden sparks scattered from the impact as the creature staggered backward.
But there was no time to breathe.
Another one jumped.
Devara caught it by both forelegs before it could reach him and slammed it into the ground.
He immediately rolled away as another predator landed where he had been standing, its claws tearing deep grooves through the soil.
Devara rose again.
He looked around.
There were more. Far more.
The golden creatures seemed almost endless.
Every time he knocked one aside, another appeared behind it.
Whenever he created an opening, two more filled the space.
Their movements were coordinated with frightening precision, and Devara quickly realized what they were doing.
They were not trying to defeat him individually.
They were trying to overwhelm him.
"You’re planning to bury me under your numbers, aren’t you?"
A predator lunged.
Devara caught it by the throat and pushed it backward.
Another came from behind.
He turned and punched it away.
A third leapt over the first.
Devara raised his forearm and blocked its jaws, the impact forcing him several steps backward.
His feet dug into the golden soil.
The creature snarled directly in his face.
Devara pushed it away.
Then another attacked.
Then another.
The clearing around the golden lake had completely transformed.
What had once been a breathtaking celestial landscape was now a battlefield.
Golden flames scorched patches of grass, trees had been broken by charging bodies, and deep marks covered the earth where the predators had landed.
The beautiful lake continued shimmering peacefully behind them, almost absurdly calm compared to the chaos taking place along its shore.
Devara’s breathing became heavier.
Not from exhaustion.
From the sheer number of attackers.
He struck one across the ribs and sent it tumbling away.
Another immediately replaced it.
Devara’s eyes narrowed.
"How many of you are there?"
The answer seemed to be more than he could count.
The predators suddenly spread apart.
Devara noticed the change.
They were creating distance.
He slowly straightened.
"What are you..."
Then it came.
A tremendous ROAR erupted across the battlefield.
The sound shook the entire forest.
The ground beneath Devara’s feet trembled.
The golden lake rippled violently, sending waves racing toward the shore.
Birds exploded from the surrounding trees, while even the transformed golden predators suddenly stopped in their tracks.
Devara’s eyes widened.
The roar had not come from any of the creatures surrounding him.
It had come from somewhere deeper within the forest.
Every golden predator turned toward the sound.
For the first time since the battle began, none of them attacked.
Devara slowly looked in the same direction.
Something was coming.
The roar echoed again, deeper and more powerful than before.
Devara’s expression became serious.
"That’s not one of these horses."
Across the battlefield, the golden predators lowered their heads.
Their aggressive snarls disappeared.
They were no longer looking at Devara.
They were looking toward whatever had just roared.
And from the opposite side of the forest, Kandarpaasura, who had been desperately running from the herd, also heard the same roar.
He stopped.
His eyes widened.
For a moment, even the golden predators chasing him stopped moving.
Kandarpaasura slowly turned his head toward the source of the sound.
"What in the worlds is that?"
The forest fell silent.
Then something enormous moved between the trees.
A shadow passed across the golden grass.
Just as every creature’s attention shifted toward the source of the tremendous roar, the sound came again.
ROOOOOAR!
This time the forest itself seemed to tremble beneath it.
The golden predators stopped completely.
Their ears turned toward the trees, their bodies becoming strangely still as though even they understood that something far more dangerous had entered their territory.
Devara stood among them, his breathing steadying as his eyes remained fixed upon the dense forest ahead.
Kandarpaasura had also stopped running.
For once, he was not being chased.
He stood several dozen yards away, staring into the trees with narrowed eyes.
The branches began moving.
Something large was approaching.
A thick foreleg emerged first, followed by a massive body covered in powerful muscles.
The creature’s paws crushed the vegetation beneath them as it stepped into the open.
Its upper body resembled a lion, possessing a magnificent mane and a face filled with predatory strength, while its lower body carried the powerful form of another great beast.
Its enormous claws dug into the earth, and its eyes burned with a wild intelligence.
Devara’s expression immediately became serious.
"Yali..."
There was no mistaking it.
The creature standing before them was a Yali, one of the most dangerous mythical beasts known for its immense strength and ferocity.
It slowly raised its head.
Its gaze passed over the golden predators before settling upon Devara.
Then it turned toward Kandarpaasura.
For a moment, neither contestant moved.
The Yali released a low growl.
The sound rolled through the clearing like distant thunder.
Then the voice of Lord Brahma suddenly echoed throughout the forest, carrying from every direction at once.
"Devara! Kandarpaasura! The third stage has begun!"
Both immediately looked upward.
Brahma’s voice continued to reverberate through the trees.
"Remember the conditions of this stage. The Yali is your final challenge, but you cannot confront it yet. First, each of you must successfully mount one of the golden horses. Only after you have mounted your horse may you face the Yali."
Devara’s eyes widened slightly.
He glanced toward the golden predators surrounding him.
Then toward the Yali.
Then back toward the horses.
A faint look of disbelief crossed his face.
"So we have to do this while that thing is watching us?"
Across the clearing, Kandarpaasura looked equally annoyed.
He had barely managed to escape the golden predators before the Yali appeared, and now Brahma had made the rules even clearer.
First the horse.
Then the Yali.
He looked toward the enormous beast.
The Yali lowered its head slightly.
Its eyes remained fixed upon him.
Kandarpaasura swallowed.
"You expect me to mount one of these creatures while that thing waits for me?"
Brahma’s voice answered calmly.
"That is precisely the challenge."
Silence followed.
The golden predators slowly began turning back toward the two contestants.
Devara tightened his fists.
The stallion he had been attempting to mount stood several feet away, its golden body still carrying that terrifying predatory appearance. Its sharp teeth were exposed as it watched him carefully.
Kandarpaasura found himself surrounded by several of the same creatures.
And between them, towering over the battlefield, stood the Yali.
The situation had become far more complicated than either of them had anticipated.
Devara slowly exhaled.
"All right."
His eyes returned to the golden stallion.
"First I ride."
He then glanced toward the Yali.
"Then I deal with you."
The Yali answered with another deep roar.
The golden predators simultaneously lowered their bodies.
Kandarpaasura clenched his fists.
The third stage had truly begun.
