The Yali suddenly turned its attention away from Devara and Kandarpaasura.

A distant rumbling reached the clearing.

Through the trees came a herd of enormous elephants.

They were unlike any elephants either contestant had ever seen.

Each possessed four magnificent tusks, two extending from either side of its enormous mouth, while their bodies were covered in thick, dark hide that shimmered faintly beneath the strange light of the forest.

They were majestic creatures, their enormous ears flapping as they ran, their trunks swinging wildly as they desperately tried to escape the beast behind them.

But even creatures of such size and power were terrified.

Because the Yali was chasing them.

The massive beast accelerated with frightening ease, its powerful legs tearing through the forest as it pursued the herd.

The elephants trumpeted in panic, their footsteps shaking the ground with every desperate stride.

Devara watched in silence.

"Those elephants are enormous..."

Kandarpaasura’s eyes remained fixed on the chase.

One of the elephants suddenly stumbled as the Yali closed the distance.

The Yali lunged.

Its elephant-like trunk shot forward and wrapped around the fleeing creature.

With a single effortless motion, the Yali lifted the enormous elephant completely off the ground.

Devara’s eyes widened.

The elephant thrashed desperately, its four tusks swinging through the air, but compared with the Yali’s immense strength, the gigantic creature looked almost helpless.

It was as though the Yali had picked up a small animal.

The Yali opened its enormous jaws.

The elephant’s trumpeting became frantic.

Then the Yali began feeding.

It bit into the elephant with terrifying ease, tearing away pieces as though this were nothing more than an ordinary meal.

There was no hesitation in its movements and no sign that the enormous creature’s size concerned it in the slightest.

The other elephants scattered deeper into the forest.

The Yali continued eating, completely unconcerned with the two contestants watching nearby.

Devara’s expression hardened.

"So that’s what Lord Brahma meant by dangerous."

Kandarpaasura stared at the Yali.

For perhaps the first time since the contest had begun, he looked genuinely cautious.

The creature did not behave like an animal fighting out of anger.

It behaved like a predator that had done this countless times before.

To the Yali, an elephant that would have been considered an enormous and formidable beast by almost any other creature was simply food.

The Yali finished its meal and dropped what remained before lifting its head.

Its tongue passed briefly across its jaws.

Then its enormous eyes slowly shifted back toward the clearing.

Devara did not give himself another moment to hesitate.

The sight of the Yali devouring the four-tusked elephant had made one thing painfully clear.

If he wanted any chance of facing that beast, he needed to complete the second stage immediately.

His eyes returned to the golden stallion he had been pursuing.

The creature was still watching him, its predatory form radiating power, its golden mane flowing around its neck.

Its sharp teeth remained exposed as it watched Devara approach, yet this time Devara did not chase it blindly.

He stepped toward it with purpose.

The stallion immediately shifted backward.

Devara moved with it.

The creature turned.

Devara turned.

It attempted to accelerate away.

Devara accelerated with it.

For several moments, the two moved around the clearing in a strange dance, neither willing to give the other an opening.

Then Devara suddenly changed his direction, anticipating the stallion’s movement before it could make it.

His hand caught its mane.

The stallion violently jerked its head.

Devara held on.

It reared.

Devara pulled himself upward.

The stallion twisted its body and attempted to throw him off, but Devara wrapped one arm firmly around its powerful neck and finally swung himself onto its back.

He landed securely.

The golden beast immediately bucked.

Devara’s body rose from its back, but his legs tightened around its sides and he held on.

"Easy!"

The stallion continued struggling.

Devara leaned forward and kept his grip around its mane.

"I’m not trying to hurt you!"

The creature finally lowered its front legs, though it continued snorting aggressively.

Devara looked toward the Yali.

The enormous beast had noticed them.

Its massive head turned in their direction.

Devara then looked down at the golden stallion beneath him.

"I need your help."

The stallion slowly turned its head.

Its golden eyes met Devara’s.

Devara pointed toward the Yali.

"That creature is going to come for us. I need to defeat it, but I cannot do it alone."

The stallion stared at him.

Its expression, if such a thing could be read from a creature’s eyes, seemed almost incredulous.

The look practically said that Devara had lost his mind.

"You want to challenge that?"

Devara understood the message.

He gave a small, almost amused smile.

"Yes."

The stallion snorted.

It looked toward the Yali again.

The beast was enormous.

It had just lifted a four-tusked elephant as effortlessly as someone might pick up a small animal. Its jaws had torn through that creature without hesitation.

Compared to it, even the golden stallion looked considerably smaller.

Yet Devara did not look away.

He kept his eyes upon the stallion.

"I know what you’re thinking."

The stallion’s ears flicked backward.

Devara’s expression became serious.

"You think I’m a fool for challenging something like that."

The horse continued staring.

"But listen to me."

Devara leaned slightly forward, lowering his voice.

"I am not asking you to carry me while I take all the glory."

The stallion’s ears slowly turned toward him.

"If you help me defeat that beast..."

Devara placed one hand firmly against its neck.

"...then the glory belongs to both of us."

The stallion’s golden eyes shifted toward Devara’s face.

Devara held its gaze without blinking.

"We will face it together. Your strength, your speed and my strength. Neither of us will stand above the other."

The stallion stared into his green eyes.

There was no arrogance in them.

No desire to dominate and only determination.

Devara continued quietly.

"So what do you say?"

For several seconds, the golden stallion remained completely still.

Then its ears slowly rose.

Its eyes narrowed as it looked toward the Yali.

The creature gave a deep, rumbling growl.

Devara’s lips curved into a smile.

He tightened his grip on the golden mane.

"That’s what I wanted to hear."

The stallion lowered its body.

Its muscles tightened beneath Devara.

Golden energy began flowing through its legs.

The Yali raised its head.

A roar erupted across the forest.

The golden stallion answered with a thunderous neigh.

Devara leaned forward.

"Let’s show that beast what happens when it picks the wrong prey."

The stallion suddenly launched forward.

Devara and his newly chosen companion charged straight toward the Yali.

Meanwhile, Kandarpaasura had finally managed to put some distance between himself and the golden predators, but the sight that greeted him only made his irritation burn hotter.

Across the battlefield, he saw Devara.

And Devara was already mounted.

The golden stallion beneath him charged forward with enormous strides, its golden mane whipping through the air while Devara held firmly to it, completely composed despite the chaos surrounding them.

Kandarpaasura’s teeth clenched.

His eyes slowly moved down toward his own body.

His arms were covered with scratches.

His clothes were torn in several places.

His wings had suffered damage from the corrosive flowers, and his body still carried the marks of being kicked, bitten and thrown around by the golden predators.

Dust and dirt covered him from head to toe.

He looked like he had just survived an entire war.

Then he looked back at Devara.

The mortal appeared almost untouched.

Kandarpaasura’s eye twitched.

"Of course."

His hands curled into fists.

"Of course he gets one."

He watched as Devara and the golden stallion raced toward the Yali.

Kandarpaasura’s expression darkened.

The more he thought about it, the more convinced he became that something was wrong.

He had been forced through deadly flowers.

He had nearly been corroded alive.

He had been chased through the forest by an entire herd.

He had been bitten, kicked and attacked from every direction.

And now, after all of that, Devara had simply managed to approach a golden horse and mount it.

Kandarpaasura’s face twisted with frustration.

"Those gods..."

His eyes narrowed toward the distant figures of Devara and his golden companion.

"They deliberately made my path harder."

In his mind, the evidence was overwhelming.

The river had been filled with countless souls that had tried to drag him beneath the water.

The forest had thrown one danger after another at him.

Even the golden horses seemed to have been particularly hostile toward him.

Yet Devara?

Somehow, everything seemed to fall into place for him.

Kandarpaasura’s breathing became heavier.

"While I had to fight half this forest..."

He pointed toward Devara.

"...he practically walked through it!"

His voice echoed across the clearing.

"And now he has already mounted one!"
