-------------------------------------------------

Seeing that the attack had missed its target, the Yali did not stop.

Smoke curled from its enormous jaws as its head slowly turned toward the direction in which Devara and the golden stallion had escaped.

Its eyes followed them with frightening precision, and the moment it found them, the beast opened its mouth once again.

Devara immediately understood what it intended to do.

The Yali did not simply want to fire in their direction.

It was tracking them.

Its head began moving sideways, following their movement and dragging the stream of fire across the battlefield in an attempt to bring them back into its range.

The flames came sweeping toward them again.

Devara’s eyes narrowed.

"Not this time."

He raised Pinakodanda.

Instead of placing an arrow against the string, he simply drew the bowstring back with his fingers.

Blue Yogic energy immediately began flowing through the bow.

But this time, the energy did not gather into an Astra.

It spread outward.

A brilliant translucent barrier formed directly in front of Devara and the golden stallion.

The shield was almost perfectly transparent, resembling a gigantic sheet of glass suspended in the air.

Yet beneath its crystal-like surface, countless streams of blue Yogic energy spiralled continuously, giving the barrier an otherworldly appearance.

Devara looked at it for a brief moment.

Then the Yali’s fire struck.

BOOOOOOM!

The entire transparent shield shook.

A colossal wave of flames crashed against it, completely covering Devara and the golden horse from view.

The heat surrounding them became intense.

Yet the shield held.

The golden fire spread across its surface, desperately trying to break through, but the barrier remained intact. Instead of allowing the flames to pass through, the shield redirected their force.

The enormous stream of fire struck the center of the barrier and suddenly divided.

One half was pushed toward the left.

The other half was forced toward the right.

The battlefield ahead of Devara became engulfed in two blazing walls of fire, while a narrow path opened directly through the center.

Devara’s eyes gleamed.

"Go!"

The golden stallion understood immediately.

It charged forward.

Devara guided it straight through the opening.

The two raced between the divided streams of fire, the transparent shield moving with them and protecting them from the flames on either side.

Fire roared only a few feet away, but none of it could reach them.

The Yali’s eyes widened.

It had expected its attack to force them back.

Instead, they were coming closer.

Devara lowered Pinakodanda slightly while keeping the shield active.

"You’re going to have to do better than that."

The golden stallion accelerated.

The two blazing walls continued roaring on either side as they passed through the center, the transparent Yogic shield cutting a safe corridor through the Yali’s devastating breath.

And with every stride, Devara and his golden companion were getting closer to the beast.

Meanwhile, from the opposite side of the battlefield, Kandarpaasura finally emerged from the forest.

The golden stallion beneath him was still moving at tremendous speed, but unlike before, it was no longer running wherever it pleased.

The darkness that Kandarpaasura had forced into its mind had suppressed its own will, making the magnificent creature obey his commands.

Kandarpaasura looked ahead.

His eyes immediately found the Yali.

The enormous beast was completely focused upon Devara, its attention occupied by the transparent Yogic shield that was dividing its golden flames and allowing Devara and his golden companion to advance through the middle.

A sinister smile appeared on Kandarpaasura’s face.

"Perfect."

This was the opening he had been waiting for.

He lifted one hand.

Darkness immediately gathered around his palm, swirling like a living shadow. The energy condensed rapidly, forming the shape of a massive spear.

A moment later, the weapon fully materialized in his grasp, its dark surface pulsing with sinister energy.

Kandarpaasura’s eyes narrowed.

He did not aim at the Yali’s chest.

He did not aim at its limbs.

His gaze fixed upon its eyes.

"Let’s see how you fight when you cannot see."

He raised the spear.

The golden stallion continued running beneath him while Kandarpaasura adjusted his position, waiting for the exact moment when the Yali would be completely committed to its confrontation with Devara.

The Yali’s head remained turned toward Devara.

Its attention was entirely on the approaching warrior.

Kandarpaasura smiled.

"Now."

His arm moved.

The spear left his hand.

SHOOOOM!

It shot across the battlefield with tremendous speed.

Dark energy spiralled around the weapon as it flew, leaving behind a long trail of black particles that scattered through the air like fragments of night.

The spear rotated rapidly as it travelled, its point aimed with deadly precision toward one of the Yali’s eyes.

Kandarpaasura watched confidently from atop the controlled golden stallion.

The Yali still had not noticed.

The spear crossed the distance between them.

Closer and closer.

Its dark point was now only moments away from the beast’s eye.

Kandarpaasura’s grin widened.

He had found the perfect opportunity.

While the Yali was completely occupied with Devara, he had launched an attack directly at its most vulnerable target.

And this time, he intended to make certain that the beast remembered his presence.

The spear struck.

CRACK!

Its darkened tip pierced directly through the Yali’s eye, and the enormous beast immediately threw its head backward.

A deafening roar of pain erupted from its throat as the stream of golden fire abruptly ceased.

The flames vanished from the air.

Devara, who had been advancing behind his transparent shield, immediately noticed the change.

He lowered Pinakodanda slightly and looked toward the source of the Yali’s sudden roar.

The beast staggered.

Its enormous claws dug into the ground as it shook its head violently, trying to dislodge the spear.

The weapon remained lodged in its eye, dark energy crawling around the wound.

The Yali finally raised one massive foreleg and brought its paw toward its face.

With a rough motion, it nudged the spear sideways, forcing the weapon out of its eye.

The spear fell to the ground.

The Yali’s wounded eye glowed with fury.

Its remaining eye turned.

Straight toward Kandarpaasura.

Kandarpaasura was already smiling.

"Finally."

The Yali’s jaws opened.

Golden light immediately began gathering inside its mouth again.

Kandarpaasura watched the growing radiance without moving.

"Come on."

The Yali unleashed its fire.

FWOOM!

A gigantic torrent of golden flames raced toward him.

Kandarpaasura’s smile widened.

He simply raised one hand.

Darkness erupted from his palm and rapidly expanded outward, forming a barrier in front of him and the golden stallion he controlled.

Unlike Devara’s transparent shield, Kandarpaasura’s barrier was almost completely black, its surface swirling like an endless void.

The Yali’s fire struck it.

BOOOOM!

The flames spread across the dark barrier.

But instead of being redirected, they began disappearing.

The golden fire was swallowed into the darkness.

Kandarpaasura watched with satisfaction as the blazing attack was absorbed deeper and deeper into his barrier.

The darkness seemed to consume the fire itself, extinguishing every fragment of golden energy that entered it until nothing remained.

The last remnants of the flame vanished.

Silence returned.

Kandarpaasura lowered his hand slightly.

His grin became wider.

"Your fire is useless against darkness."

The Yali stared at him.

Its breathing became heavier.

One eye remained wounded, while the other burned with murderous fury.

Kandarpaasura leaned forward upon the golden stallion.

"You should have kept your attention on Devara."

Across the battlefield, Devara watched the exchange carefully.

His eyes narrowed.

Kandarpaasura had finally reached the battlefield, and unlike before, he was no longer merely trying to survive the golden horses.

He had turned one of them into his weapon.

Devara’s gaze shifted toward the stallion beneath Kandarpaasura.

Something about its blackened eyes disturbed him.

The creature was obeying every command, but there was no longer any sign of its own will.

Devara tightened his grip on Pinakodanda.

"This isn’t cooperation."

His voice was quiet.

"He’s controlling it."

The golden stallion beneath Devara gave a low growl, almost as though it understood what Devara had noticed.

Ahead of them, the Yali lowered its body.

Kandarpaasura raised his spear once more.

And between the three combatants, the battlefield seemed to hold its breath.

While the Yali’s attention remained fixed upon Kandarpaasura, Devara saw an opportunity.

The enormous beast had one eye wounded, its attention divided between the two opponents, and its body was still angled toward the asura.

Devara lowered Pinakodanda slightly and guided his golden stallion forward, attempting to approach from the side without drawing the Yali’s attention.

The golden horse moved quietly, its hooves barely disturbing the ground as Devara leaned forward as he whisper.

"Easy, Let us get behind it."

For a few moments, it seemed to work.

The Yali remained focused on Kandarpaasura, who was standing upon his controlled golden stallion with his dark spear ready in his hand.

Devara came closer.

A little closer.

He was almost within striking distance.

Then the Yali’s ear twitched.

Devara’s eyes narrowed.

’It knows.’

The Yali did not even turn its head.

Instead, its enormous tail suddenly swung around.

The appendage was unlike an ordinary animal’s tail.

Along its length were several sharp, blade-like edges that shimmered with a dangerous metallic glow.

The Yali snapped it through the air with tremendous force.

WHOOOSH!

Devara reacted instantly.

He pulled the golden stallion sideways.

The bladed tail tore through the space where they had been a moment earlier.

Devara leaned backward as the sharp edge passed dangerously close to his chest.

"That was close."

The Yali immediately swung its tail again.

This time Devara raised Pinakodanda and blocked the strike.

CLANG!

The impact sent a powerful shock through his arm.

The golden stallion staggered several steps sideways.

Devara’s eyes widened slightly.

"Strong."

The Yali finally turned its head toward him.

Its remaining eye locked onto Devara.

The beast gave a low growl.

Devara sighed.

"So you haven’t forgotten me."

The Yali’s tail rose behind it again, the sharp edges catching the light.

Devara tightened his grip on Pinakodanda.

"I suppose I should have known."

He glanced briefly toward Kandarpaasura.

The asura was already preparing another attack.

Then Devara looked back at the Yali.

"Just because another fool decided to challenge you doesn’t mean you would forget the first one."

The Yali suddenly whipped its tail forward.

Devara guided the golden stallion into a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding the blade-like edge once again.

The tail smashed into the ground.

BOOM!

The impact cracked the earth.

Devara looked at the deep groove left behind.

His expression became serious.

"All right."

He raised Pinakodanda and the golden stallion lowered itself beneath him.
