Devara did not give the Yali another chance to turn its attention fully toward him.
He pulled the string of Pinakodanda once again, his muscles tightening as blue Yogic energy flowed from his body into the divine bow.
But this time the energy did not remain blue.
It spiralled around the string and gathered at its center, gradually changing into a brilliant yellow radiance.
The light condensed into the shape of an Astra, glowing intensely enough to illuminate Devara’s face.
His eyes fixed upon the back of the Yali’s enormous head.
He was not aiming for its flesh.
He was aiming for control.
Devara released the string.
SHOOOOOM!
The yellow Astra shot forward like a streak of lightning, cutting through the air with tremendous speed.
The Yali had barely turned its head toward Devara when the Astra struck the back of its head.
But instead of exploding or tearing through the creature’s body, the Astra burst into countless streams of golden light.
The Yali’s eyes widened.
CLANK!
CLANK! CLANK!
Chains began appearing around its body.
One wrapped around its neck.
Another crossed its massive chest.
Several more coiled around its legs, torso and powerful arms, while additional chains appeared around its shoulders and tail.
They materialized from the golden energy like they had been waiting inside the Astra itself.
The Yali immediately tried to move.
The chains tightened.
Their sharp edges suddenly extended outward and pierced deep into the ground.
BOOM!
Several of the chains drove themselves into the earth, anchoring the enormous beast in place.
More followed, their pointed ends burying themselves deep beneath the soil until the entire Yali was held by a network of glowing golden restraints.
The creature roared and violently pulled against them.
The ground shook.
Several trees trembled from the force.
But the chains held.
Devara’s eyes narrowed as he watched the Yali struggle.
"Got you."
He had no intention of killing the creature.
If the objective was to confront the Yali, then there was no reason to waste time trying to overpower its regeneration. Instead, he had chosen to restrict its movement first.
The Yali pulled again.
The chains tightened further.
Its claws tore grooves into the ground as it attempted to break free.
Devara raised Pinakodanda, keeping it ready in case the restraints failed.
But from the opposite side of the battlefield, someone else had noticed exactly what Devara was doing.
Kandarpaasura.
His eyes widened as he watched the golden chains spread across the Yali’s enormous body.
"He is trying to capture it!"
The realization immediately agitated him.
Kandarpaasura’s grip tightened around his dark spear.
After everything he had endured, he had finally managed to mount a golden horse.
Yet instead of immediately confronting the Yali, Devara had found a way to restrain the beast.
If Devara subdued it before Kandarpaasura could do anything, the contest could effectively be decided.
"No."
His face darkened.
"I will not let him take this victory from me."
The golden horse beneath Kandarpaasura shifted nervously as he pulled on its mane.
"Go!"
The corrupted stallion immediately obeyed.
Kandarpaasura leaned forward, dark energy gathering around his body as he charged toward the restrained Yali.
His eyes remained fixed upon Devara.
"You have had enough advantages already!"
Behind him, the Yali continued struggling against the golden chains.
And Devara, still mounted upon his own golden companion, noticed Kandarpaasura rapidly approaching.
His expression became serious.
"He’s coming."
The third stage was no longer a battle between two contestants and the Yali.
It had become a three-way confrontation.
Kandarpaasura’s irritation finally boiled over.
Seeing Devara restraining the Yali with the golden chains, he realized that if he allowed the mortal to continue,
Devara might subdue the beast before he even had the opportunity to confront it.
Kandarpaasura’s eyes narrowed as he tightened his grip around his dark spear.
"I won’t let you interfere."
He suddenly pulled his arm backward and hurled the spear.
SHOOOOOM!
The weapon tore through the air at tremendous speed, wrapped in swirling darkness as it travelled directly toward Devara.
Kandarpaasura had not aimed to kill him.
He wanted to disable him, to remove him from the battle long enough to deal with the Yali himself.
The spear rapidly closed the distance.
Devara noticed it.
But instead of moving away, his eyes followed the weapon calmly.
At the last instant, he shifted his body backward.
His upper body bent almost horizontally over the golden stallion’s back as his hand shot upward.
CLANG!
His fingers closed around the shaft.
The force behind the spear was immense.
The golden stallion’s hooves dug violently into the ground as it was pushed backward several meters, carving long grooves into the earth.
Devara’s body remained bent backward, his arm stretched outward as the spear continued trying to drive him away.
Yet he did not release it.
The golden stallion strained beneath him, muscles trembling as it fought against the force.
Devara’s grip tightened.
Then his feet shifted.
He straightened his body.
The spear stopped.
Kandarpaasura’s eyes widened from across the battlefield.
"What?"
For the first time, genuine disbelief appeared on his face.
Devara had caught his spear with his bare hand.
Kandarpaasura had never even considered that possibility.
Devara slowly brought the weapon around.
His green eyes locked onto the asura.
"You should have aimed better."
Kandarpaasura’s expression hardened.
Devara pulled his arm backward.
The golden stallion beneath him planted its hooves firmly into the earth.
Then Devara hurled the spear.
BOOOOOOM!
The weapon exploded forward.
It travelled nearly twice as fast as it had when Kandarpaasura had thrown it, tearing through the air with such force that the darkness surrounding the spear stretched into a long black trail behind it.
Kandarpaasura’s eyes widened.
"Wait!"
He had barely enough time to react.
He immediately pulled his golden stallion to the side.
But the spear was already upon him.
He twisted his body desperately.
The weapon missed his chest.
But it struck his left shoulder.
CRACK!
The impact spun Kandarpaasura around.
The force of the returning spear tore through his balance and sent him tumbling from the golden horse.
He crashed heavily onto the ground and rolled several times before finally coming to a stop.
Dust rose around him.
The controlled golden stallion stopped nearby.
For a few moments, Kandarpaasura remained motionless.
Then his fingers pressed into the earth.
He slowly lifted himself.
His left shoulder throbbed violently, the impact having left him struggling to move the arm properly.
His eyes turned toward Devara.
Devara was still mounted.
Still holding Pinakodanda.
And still standing between Kandarpaasura and the Yali.
Kandarpaasura’s expression became darker.
He had expected Devara to dodge.
He had expected him to block.
He had never imagined the mortal would simply catch the spear and throw it back with even greater force.
Across the battlefield, Devara calmly looked at him.
"Next time you throw something at me..."
His grip tightened around Pinakodanda.
"...make sure you’re prepared to catch it when it comes back."
Behind him, the restrained Yali suddenly roared and began violently pulling against the golden chains once more.
The battlefield was far from over.
As Kandarpaasura crashed onto the ground, the golden stallion that had been carrying him remained standing for a brief moment, its body trembling violently.
The darkness Kandarpaasura had forced into its mind had begun to weaken the moment his concentration was broken, and now the creature’s consciousness slowly returned to it.
Its eyes, which had been completely black, flickered.
The darkness receded.
Golden light returned to its pupils.
The stallion blinked several times as though awakening from a terrible dream.
It looked around in confusion before its gaze finally settled upon the Yali.
The enormous beast was still thrashing violently against Devara’s golden chains.
Its claws tore at the earth.
Its muscles strained against the restraints.
Its wounded eye burned with fury while its remaining eye remained fixed upon the battlefield.
The stallion froze.
Every instinct inside the creature screamed at it.
Run.
It did not even look toward Kandarpaasura.
The asura was still lying on the ground only a short distance away, struggling to recover from the impact of his own spear.
The stallion turned around.
Kandarpaasura noticed the movement from the corner of his eye.
"What are you doing?"
The horse did not listen.
It began running.
"Wait!"
Kandarpaasura pushed himself up.
"Come back!"
The stallion accelerated.
Kandarpaasura’s eyes widened as he realized the creature was no longer under his control.
"You can’t..."
He barely managed to turn his body.
The golden stallion thundered straight toward him.
THUD!
Its powerful legs ran directly over Kandarpaasura.
"UGH!"
The impact sent him rolling across the ground once again.
The stallion did not even slow down.
It continued racing away from the Yali as quickly as its legs could carry it, its golden mane streaming behind it.
Kandarpaasura lay sprawled on the ground, staring after it in disbelief.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then his face twisted with pure outrage.
"That... horse..."
He slowly pushed himself upright.
"...just ran over me."
Across the battlefield, Devara had witnessed the entire scene.
He stared at Kandarpaasura.
Then at the fleeing golden stallion.
Then back at Kandarpaasura.
Despite the seriousness of the battle, Devara couldn’t help the small smile that appeared on his face.
"You really have had a difficult day."
Kandarpaasura glared at him.
"Do not say another word."
Devara’s smile grew slightly.
"I wasn’t going to."
Behind them, the Yali suddenly pulled against the golden chains again.
The ground shook violently.
Devara’s amusement disappeared as he turned toward the beast.
The chains were beginning to strain.
The Yali was recovering.
And now Kandarpaasura was without a horse.
The battle had just become even more complicated.
