Married To My One Night Mistake

Katherine came over and crossed her arms around Clancy’s bicep. She leaned her head gently on his upper arm and stayed still for a while. He didn’t push her away and he didn’t initiate a conversation either.

"I’m sorry for everything, Clancy" Katherine apologised for the up-tent time. She’d lost count of how many times she’d apologise and pleaded to him to forgive her. He was mad with mum the most.

But talking about it, she played a significant role in all that happened. She was the one who went to Selen and made her sign the divorce papers. She was the one who instigated mum that sending Selen away was the best decision.

"I am to be blamed for everything that happened. I should have thought of her parting words, when she said I would one day remember what I’ve done and regret it greatly..." Katherine paused and sniffled.

Clancy was still. He hadn’t heard that part of the whole incident. Selen Williams knew what she meant. She already knew that he would regret treating her that way when he found out about the pregnancy.

Katherine continued "And today, Clancy, I regret my actions. I think I have paid for my sins. I have, and I am afraid of this pattern taunting me for the rest of my life"

Clancy sighed and placed the photograph in his hand back to its place. It baffles him how her things had been neatly kept despite being away for years. They should have kept her, that was more important than keeping her things.

"How much have you paid for your sins compared to what I am going through? No one bears the brunt of Selen’s disappearance than me. Whatever you think you are going through, it’s a shadow of my pain and inner suffering" Clancy explained.

"No, you’re wrong on that brother" Katherine rebuffed and let go of his biceps. She walked over and stood in front of him and sighed "I have been married for five years Clancy, and I have suffered miscarriages more than I could bear.

Mike is withdrawn from me and doesn’t want to make love to me anymore because he assumed I wasn’t capable of giving him a baby. It’s a waste of effort, that’s what he said.

And why I think I am paying for my sins is because a dream usually precedes my miscarriage..." Katherine choked as her trembling voice turned into a sob.

Clancy just stared at her. He doesn’t know what to say to her. Maybe sob and empty your burden or withhold your tears and bottle up your pain, causing more harm. He just glanced away and saw the tiny wardrobe where Selen’s things were kept.

He walked towards it when Katherine continued "The tears of Selen and the bloody threat of a miscarriage that she experienced repeats itself in my dreams and when it does, I’ll lose the pregnancy again..."

At this point, Clancy paused. What is Katherine saying? He saw the CCTV footage of what they did to Selen and he saw the blood. She was soaked in her own blood and unconscious when she was taken to the hospital.

He still doesn’t know how the pregnancy was saved. That volume of blood for foetuses at three months? He doesn’t believe in miracles but what he saw that day, makes him realise that miracles do happen on rare occasions.

He’d kept that clip and it taunts him each time he watches it. But no matter what happens, he is never going to discard that clip. Was it the same scene, playing itself in Katherine’s dream?

"I had visited psychiatric hospitals and even tried getting help from a psychologist but none of it was making a difference. In exactly three months of my pregnancy, I will have that dream and I’ll lose my babies" she concluded.

She knew they were wrong. She was wrong and mum was, too. But Selen’s babies survived. Why was she suffering so much? Had she cursed her from being a mother?

Clancy sighed softly and opened the closet. A few dresses were hung in the closet. They absolutely belonged to Selen. He saw the dress, the one she wore on the night when they met. The night they made their babies.

He took the dress and decided he was going home with it. That was the only time he ever had a proper conversation with Selen. After that night, he was being hostile and ruthless towards her.

He’ll have the servants move everything in that room that belongs to Selen into his room. She was supposed to be the one occupying that room in the first place.

"Did you even hear what I said Clancy?" Katherine asked. He didn’t even turn to glance at her nor say a word to all she’d said. Did he hate her this much or he just doesn’t feel concerned about her pains and losses?

"Of course I heard you" he replied and turned to face her "But there’s nothing I can do about it. I suffered too, and I’m still suffering. My kids are breathing somewhere on this planet or probably this continent and I haven’t set my eyes on them.

Do you know what that means? Can you guess how old they are now? I am a father, Katherine but I don’t even know what my triplets look like. I know you are suffering, but I am too.

And this would never have happened if you had been sensible enough to place a call to me that my wife was pregnant and you were going to send her away. You are a woman, Katherine, do you have no pity for another woman who was pregnant?

Even if the child in her belly wasn’t mine, you should have a bit of humanity in you. You shouldn’t have treated her the way you did. You saw how much she bled and you’re not concerned about it.

Even if Selen is paying for the greediness of the Williams, what about the babies in her belly? Should they share in the errors of their predecessors? What do you now want me to say?

I think we all need to manage whatever we’re going through and keep searching for her. Perhaps we will find her one day and then she will forgive us. I hope you are able to have a baby of yours and I also hope you don’t lose Mike.

That guy loves you despite your senseless acts. Having him and keeping him should be your priority now, Kath"Clancy blurted. He was trying hard to keep his tempers in check. Katherine is really annoying.

"But I want your forgiveness first, Clancy. If I get yours, I know that one day I’ll get Selen’s. Please forgive me, brother" Katherine pleaded. Her brother is hurt beyond words, she knows.

While waiting to see Selen and get pardoned, she can begin from her own brother. She hopes things get a little better for her after now.

"If it’s me, you have my forgiveness Kath. I hold no grudge against you or mum anymore. If I still do, I wouldn’t be here sharing a dinner with you" Clancy declared.

After what dad said earlier, he knew that only he was to be blamed for what happened. He was the one who sinned and hurt Selen, not his family. He’d placed her in a position and they accorded the respect that is due to that position.

Katherine smiled, wiping her tears off. This is a milestone achieved. If she got his pardon, she’s closer now to getting her guilt washed away than before.

"Thank you Clancy," Katherine appreciated and went to him hugging him. Clancy forced a smile and hugged her, kissing her temple.

"I love you Clancy," Katherine said, placing her head against his torso. Being away from her brother for a few years was more hurting to her than what she felt when she learnt that Selen was pregnant without a wedding consummation.

"Do I need to tell you again, that I’ve always loved you?" Clancy asked and the siblings chuckled.
