In the hospital, Selen opened her eyes slowly, she didn’t know where she was, she glanced around and gradually recognised her environment, it seemed she was in a hospital. How did she end up here, glancing at the drip infused into the back of her palm.

Then she remembered: She was pregnant and then, she...oh no...did she lose her baby as well? She tried getting off the bed but she couldn’t, she laid back weakly as her tears cascaded down the sides of her eyes.

She placed her palm on her belly, it was flat, like always. She lost her baby...oh, she lost him. Why were they so cruel to her? How can they not take pity on her innocent baby and kill him before he was ever given the chance to see the light of this world?

She didn’t know how long she sobbed, but soon heard footsteps coming in her direction. She sniffled and tried to look composed. Beads of tears were stacked on her temple as the door pushed open.

The last person she wanted to see walked in , her heels clicking hard against the marble floor. It was Katherine Avelino. She walked over and glared at Selen with a sneer.

"Looks like you’re unlucky. I expected that the bastard in your belly should have flushed off like a thick menstrual floor. I didn’t expect you to escape a miscarriage. That would have been better for you..." she sneered and hissed aloud in resentment.

Rather than being hurt, Selen’s eyes brightened up and she quickly placed her hand on her belly. What did this spoiled brat say? That she survived a miscarriage? That her baby was still growing in her belly?

A lone tear dropped from the sides of her eyes. Did she say she was unlucky? On the contrary, this is the first time she has ever been lucky. Luck had not always turned out good for her until now.

A feeling of excitement flooded her heart. She wasn’t listening to what Katherine was saying next until she suddenly pulled the drip off her hand and Selen cried out, blood dropping to the floor.

"Since you weren’t going to listen or respond, I had to wake you up from your dreamland. If you think you still have a place in the Avelino family, then you’re wrong. We can’t keep a slut and her bastard child under our roof" she sneered.

"You don’t have to hurt me here again. You could just call me instead" Selen snapped at her. Isn’t it enough, for all the pain, degradation and hurt they all made her go through?

She shouldn’t do it in the hospital as well.

But Katherine raised her hand and tried slapping her but Selen dodged and her hand passed through the air. Despite not being able to get out of bed, she glared at her and the two women wouldn’t blink an eye.

"I don’t want you here, get out!" Selen ordered. She doesn’t want to see her face or that of anyone from her family. The sight of any Avelino spells pain and misery to her. It’s better that she doesn’t see them.

"I don’t want to be here too, you bitch. You resent me and I hate the sight of you more than anything else in this world. Your family wants to ruin my brother and their greediness wouldn’t let them be decent enough to force a decent woman on him.

Should they present a defiled woman to him? Is it not enough that they pressured him into a marriage that he doesn’t want? And to think that you weren’t a virgin like we were told.

We have been deceived and we cannot continue with this fake union. We don’t want a defiled woman as one of our maids. You have to sign these papers and we go our separate ways" Katherine threw the paper on the bed and snapped her fingers.

Selen stayed quiet for a while.

More than anything else, she was willing to sign the papers. But she doesn’t understand what the woman meant by saying her brother was forced into the union because of her family’s greediness.

She was the one forced into the union because of the debt her family was owning. Her brother was cruel, temperamental and inhuman in nature. He has a reputation for being a misogynist.

"Sign this paper now and don’t force me to do something you wouldn’t want" Katherine spoke in haste. She hates being here. This woman displeases her greatly.

Without another word, Selen glanced at the papers. She wants to be free. She wants to go away from the clutches of the inhuman treatment she’d experienced in the past three months and go somewhere else and have her baby.

She didn’t use the pen Katherine offered but gently placed her bleeding hand on the spot needed for her signature and there was a drop of blood.

A flicker of remorse flashed through Katherine’s conscience and for once, she felt guilty. Her hostile glare gradually disseminated and she was not pleased that Selen signed with her blood and not with the pen.

But then, signing with the blood was more authentic than the pen. She saw Selen sighed softly in relief and said "Done, we’re done Katherine Avelino. You can take your papers and leave"

"Your bills will be settled and you are free to walk away" Katherine informed. She didn’t want to pay the bills, she wanted Selen to be humiliated by the hospital. That’s why she insisted on coming to see her soon.

"What a parting favour. We never met Katherine Avelino and whatever transaction you had with my family, remains between your family and mine. I’m not in the loop, I have no idea what bargains you both stroke.

And so, we never met. But one day, you will understand and you will wish that this never happened. And I sincerely hope you will be able to face me again" Selen concluded and closed her eyes, her blood still dripping and Katherine watched it in regret.

Selen’s words carried weight but she didn’t find words with which to reply to her. She walked out and went to the doctor’s office "She’s bleeding, I mean Selen Williams"

The doctor stood up hastily and walked briskly towards the ward where the patient was admitted. Katherine saw the doctor go there and her mind felt at ease temporarily. She felt that way she would be free from her guilty conscience.

She paid the bills with her card and went away. She hopes Selen doesn’t bleed too much. She shouldn’t have pulled the drip off so violently and let her blood gushed out. She shouldn’t have done that.

Selen saw the doctor and a nurse walked in, carrying bandages in a tray. She sighed softly for relief. She was thinking already, about using the bed alarm to alert the medical team since that spoiled brat has left.

"You shouldn’t have pulled the drip off, Miss Williams. This is dangerous" the doctor scolded and took her palm. In no time, the place was bandaged and the drip fixed on the second hand.

"Doctor, how’s my baby doing?" Selen spoke finally. Everything the doctor was saying didn’t really matter to her, she just wanted to be sure her unborn baby was doing well.

"You escaped miscarriage by a breath. You shouldn’t have gotten involved in strenuous activities knowing that you are pregnant. But thank goodness, the foetuses were saved..." the doctor was saying when Selen interrupted him rudely.

"Foetuses?" She asked. He can’t possibly be saying she was carrying twins in her belly. She glanced at him, excitement on her face.

"Yes, the ultrasound showed that you are pregnant with triplets..." the doctor was explaining when Selen blurted:

"Three babies?"
