Martial Immortality: Starting with the Spirit Beast Scroll
Chapter 355 - 342: Illusion Array (Part 1)Chapter 355: Chapter 342: Illusion Array (Part 1)
"What do we do?"
Wei Shi asked as they ran. He was a Body Cultivator who only knew a few auxiliary Magic skills and was at a complete loss in this situation.
Zhao Lin surveyed their surroundings and spotted a valley not far ahead. It was flanked by two mountain walls, with only a narrow path about ten feet wide running between them.
"See that valley up ahead? Control your speed. We’ll wait for him there."
Wei Shi thought Zhao Lin was preparing for a major battle. He steeled himself and said, "Alright, let’s take him on!"
The two of them deliberately feigned exhaustion, slowing their pace slightly as they dashed into the ravine between the two mountain ridges.
The Fat Cultivator flew over their heads and landed about a hundred yards in front of them, a savage grin spreading across his face. "Let’s see where you run to now!"
Zhao Lin was at the Qi Refining Third Layer, and this distance was just beyond his attack range. As for a Body Cultivator, there was even less to worry about.
Seeing the Fat Cultivator deactivate his Wind Riding Skill, Zhao Lin’s mind settled. He formed a hand seal and released a Magic skill.
Spiritual Qi gathered, and dozens of cyan-colored air masses shot out, raining down on the man.
"Void Trapping Skill!"
The Fat Cultivator looked like a duck being strangled, his eyes wide with disbelief.
’How could a Martial Cultivator at the Qi Refining Third Layer have mastered such a difficult Magic skill!’
In the blink of an eye, the air masses began to spin rapidly, transforming into massive vortexes.
Zhao Lin held nothing back, pushing his Mana to its absolute limit. Worried the Fat Cultivator might still have a Wind Riding Talisman, he made sure the air masses covered the sky as well.
Limited by the thin Spiritual Qi of the Yinfeng Realm, the vortexes of the Void Trapping Skill were slightly smaller, but the power of a mastery-level Magic skill was still astonishing.
Zhao Lin and Wei Shi turned and fled. Before leaving, Zhao Lin injected another stream of Spiritual Power into the skill to make it last longer.
’Tricked again!’
The Fat Cultivator’s face turned purple with rage. In his fury, he cast a Thorn Skill to block their path while simultaneously launching his magic treasure.
"BZZZZ..."
The moment the Antler Blade touched a vortex, it was instantly sucked in. It had just struggled free when another vortex pulled it in again.
The Fat Cultivator had no choice but to calm himself and direct the Antler Blade to churn within the vortexes, successively breaking several of them apart.
But by the time he broke through the formation of Void Trapping Skill vortexes, Zhao Lin and Wei Shi had already charged through the thicket of thorns. There wasn’t a soul in sight.
"I swear I’ll catch you two little bastards, or I’m no man!"
The Fat Cultivator roared at the sky.
...
Two hours later, Zhao Lin and Wei Shi ducked into a dense jungle.
"Thank you, Brother Zhao."
Wei Shi gave a solemn bow. "If it weren’t for Brother Zhao’s timely intervention, I would have been in for a world of pain today."
Zhao Lin waved his hand. "Don’t mention it. That guy hates both of us. He would have come after me sooner or later anyway."
"This isn’t the time to talk. Let’s restore our Spiritual Power first."
"Alright!"
The two each took out a Spirit Stone and sat down cross-legged.
That last Void Trapping Skill had consumed forty percent of Zhao Lin’s Spiritual Power, and he needed to recover it as quickly as possible.
Spiritual Power was the source of a cultivator’s strength. With reserves in hand, one’s heart could be at ease.
About an hour later, Zhao Lin and Wei Shi finished their cultivation one after the other.
"After the last Dharma Assembly, I’ll admit I wasn’t fully convinced. But seeing you in action today, Brother Zhao, you are far superior to me."
Wei Shi walked over and said with genuine admiration.
"You flatter me, Younger Brother Wei."
Zhao Lin replied humbly, intentionally changing the subject. "How are your injuries?"
Wei Shi said dismissively, "I’m a Body Cultivator. A few minor injuries are nothing."
Then he added resentfully, "People like him are the scum of the Cultivation Realm. He probably can’t break through to Foundation Establishment, so his mind has become twisted. He gets his kicks from bullying Low Tier cultivators. Sooner or later, he’ll suffer from qi deviation!"
Zhao Lin nodded. "As they say, pride comes before a fall. There’s no need to get into it with a mad dog like that."
After chatting for a while, Wei Shi suddenly remembered something. "Brother Zhao," he asked, "what was the deal with those two Sword Cultivators who appeared out of nowhere?"
"They were illusions."
Zhao Lin glanced around, thinking, ’That Yin Soul is pretty decent. It kept its promise and cast an Illusion Technique before it left, which was a huge help.’
"I figured it was an Illusion Technique..."
Wei Shi nodded, then asked in confusion, "How do you know Illusion Techniques, Brother Zhao? Does the Spirit Dao Institute teach those?"
"Well..."
Zhao Lin hesitated, unsure how to explain for a moment.
Just as they were speaking, a sudden RUSTLING sound came from within the woods.
Zhao Lin and Wei Shi turned their heads in unison. In the dim light, they saw a Yin Soul with seven-foot-long tentacles and a bell over ten feet wide floating brazenly toward them.
"Li Zhe?"
"A Yin Soul!"
Zhao Lin and Wei Shi exclaimed at the same time.
Wei Shi jolted to his feet, clenched his fists, and was about to charge forward to fight.
Zhao Lin quickly stopped him. "Younger Brother Wei, hold on! This Yin Soul... I know it."
"What?"
Wei Shi looked completely stunned, thinking he must have misheard.
"Li Zhe, why did you come back?"
Zhao Lin waved it over, though he was also puzzled. ’This Yin Soul had a perfectly good chance to escape, yet it came back to find me. Does it really see me as a friend?’
"I came to see how you were doing. That man from before was very powerful."
Li Zhe replied matter-of-factly.
Hearing the Yin Soul actually speak, Wei Shi’s jaw nearly hit the floor. He glanced from the Yin Soul to Zhao Lin, completely at a loss for words.
"Younger Brother Wei, weren’t you just asking where the illusions came from? It made them. Its name is Li Zhe."
Zhao Lin explained.
Wei Shi was stunned for a long moment. He lowered his fists and habitually cupped them toward the Yin Soul. "Thank you."
"You’re welcome."
Li Zhe raised ten of its tentacles, crossing them to form the shape of a hand, and returned the gesture.
The corner of Wei Shi’s mouth twitched as he turned to look at Zhao Lin.
"Here’s what happened. On my first day in the Yinfeng Realm, I encountered a Yin Soul..."
Zhao Lin briefly explained the whole story.
"So that’s how it is."
After hearing the story, Wei Shi found it incredible but didn’t press for more details. Instead, he asked for advice, "Brother Zhao, what’s our next move? That mad dog is surely out there searching for us."
Zhao Lin thought for a moment and said, "A cultivator at the Qi Refining Ninth Layer definitely has many tracking methods. We shouldn’t stay here for long."
Neither Wei Shi nor Li Zhe had any objections. The "three" of them walked toward the edge of the forest together.
Just as they were about to step out of the woods, Zhao Lin suddenly heard a hurried sound from high above, as if something was flying swiftly through the air.
"Hold on."
Zhao Lin raised a hand, signaling for Wei Shi and Li Zhe to stay put. He took two steps forward and peered up at the sky through a gap in the branches.
A grayish-white talisman was circling continuously several hundred feet up in the air, patrolling back and forth.
"Brother Zhao, what is it? What’s out there?"
Wei Shi asked in a low voice, seeing Zhao Lin’s grim expression.
"An Inspection Talisman."
"That guy must be insane."
Wei Shi’s expression turned ugly when he heard this.
An Inspection Talisman is similar to a Hongyan Talisman. It contains a True Intent Jade Slip that can record sounds and images along its path.
The difference is that an Inspection Talisman has an imprint of the cultivator’s own Divine Sense on it, and the talisman will return to the cultivator’s hand before its Spiritual Qi runs out.
The cultivator can then view everything it observed from the True Intent Jade Slip. It’s mainly used for reconnaissance and patrols.
The price of an Inspection Talisman is comparable to a Hongyan Talisman, with a single talisman costing over a thousand Yuan Spirit Coins.
For the Fat Cultivator to spend so much just to catch the two of them, his state of mind could no longer be described as sane.
Wei Shi hesitated for a moment, then suggested, "Why don’t we just go back? It’s fine if we don’t complete this mission. We shouldn’t stoop to the level of a mad dog like him."
Zhao Lin glanced at the stars in the sky and shook his head. "It’s just past noon now. We can’t make it back to Central Yin Mountain before the Hour of You. The earliest we could arrive is tomorrow."
Wei Shi then said, "What if we just hide here?"
Zhao Lin still shook his head. "I’m afraid that won’t work. We were only focused on running earlier, so we must have left some tracks."
"Normally, it would take a long time for him to follow our trail, but with the help of the Inspection Talisman, he should be able to find this place very soon."
"The safest thing to do is to keep moving."
Wei Shi realized he was right and immediately agreed.
Li Zhe had been listening to their conversation quietly. It suddenly spoke up, "Someone is rushing over. They’re about five hundred zhang from the edge of the forest."
