...
"I want to see with eyes unclouded."
And the third Chapter ended right there.
Thor sat outside the house of wheels where Eric slept in peace. He still had his mind on those words that came back again.
What did it mean to see with eyes clouded?
Did he have to remove the veil of his personal view? But wouldn’t that just make him a bystander? How would that help?
Thor looked at the sky, trying to make sense of it all. However, his mind didn’t want to make sense of it. He could only think of how this could help him, and maybe that was the problem.
All Father always said things like every story had two sides, and that truth lay somewhere in the middle.
In his mind, he had done well to storm Jotunheim, for they had almost broken into the vault on the day of his coronation. He just wanted to show them that they weren’t easy to mess with, that Asgard still held the power and was the ruler and protector of the Nine Realms.
But this was his side. What about the Frost Giants? How did they reach the vault? What was their reason for doing that?
Thor wasn’t going to pretend like he suddenly cared for them, but he needed to look at this with eyes unclouded. Usually, he’d just get Loki to explain stuff to him, but that was out of the question.
"On second thought..." Thor rushed into the house on wheels and poked at the sleeping Erik.
"Erik..." He lightly pushed his shoulder when he got no response.
"Erik..." This time he gave a strong push.
And the man woke up with a huge gasp, almost choking on air.
"W-What? Are they back?" He looked around for SHIELD agents.
"Who are you talking about?" Thor tilted his head.
"Those guys from before." Erik and Jane were sneakily trying to get all the data back, and they could’ve noticed and stormed the place again.
"No... why would they be here?" Thor wondered why this man was talking nonsense; maybe he should just wait for Jane to wake up.
"Then why’d you wake me up like that?" Erik pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Yes, I wanted to get your answer about something. Jane had forbidden me from waking her up at night, so I came to you." Thor explained with a charming smile since it had already come to this.
"I can see why she did that." Erik let out a tired laugh.
"That question... it better be good."
As Erik followed Thor out of the trailer and sat near the slow bonfire, he took a sip of water while listening to Thor’s story about how he stormed Jotunheim and how he got cast out of Asgard for it.
"So, what do you think?" Thor looked at him with an expectant smile.
"To get this straight, Frost Giants crashed your coronation, and you declared war on them, and Odin, the All-Father, had to come and save you and your friends. After that, he took your powers and banished you?" Erik capped the bottle with a sigh.
"Yes, but my friends and I were safe; I had it all under control." Thor huffed.
"Are you sure?" Erik raised a brow.
"Well... maybe not totally under control, but it was under my control." Thor coughed. "Let’s move on to the decision to cast me out."
"Well, if you ask me, it looks like you jumped the gun." The older man shrugged. "Odin, the All-Father, the Ruler and Protector of the nine realms- do you really think it was wise to go against his decision?"
"Father had grown too soft." Thor shook his head.
"I suppose that’s what a youngster would think." Erik chuckled. "When you are young, you feel like you can climb a mountain in a step. But when you get older, even a flight of stairs looks terrifying."
"I don’t follow."
"You don’t have to. The real question is, did no one try to stop you?" Erik stifled a yawn.
"Well..." Thor thought back on his friends and how he had convinced them to follow him, but there was another who had been a voice of reason throughout the entire thing. "Loki did try to stop me, a couple of times."
"Seemed like your brother saw something you didn’t. Perhaps he was looking at the reason Odin didn’t directly resort to war." Erik stood up slowly and looked at Thor after stretching his arms.
"I see." He looked at the crackling fire with a sombre look.
Loki was always the one who would warn him before he went and caused trouble. Trouble that often got their father’s disapproval. Maybe he truly understood something Thor couldn’t.
On the other hand, Erik kept glancing at Thor. Eventually, letting out a long sigh.
He didn’t fully believe the Asgard whatnot. This seemed like Thor finally coming out of his fever dream, which was a good thing in his eyes, considering how comfortable Jane had gotten around him.
"Honestly, it isn’t easy to look at things from a neutral point when your own interests are on the line. You either have to be a saint, or a complete psycho." He said at last, breaking the tense silence. "But there are always outliers in every situation. Something like the war with Jotunheim and the banishment is too big to untangle right now."
"Take it one step at a time, yeah?" Erik patted Thor’s shoulder and headed back for the trailer. But before entering, he said the most important part. "And from today onwards, you are forbidden from waking me up at night as well."
"...Ok." Thor scratched his head as the door closed; maybe he had grown too used to dragging people out at night since his friends and Loki never really complained.
Well, Loki did always complain at the start, but he went with him the same at the end.
"One step at a time, huh?" He muttered as the sun came back up.
Would this help him?
Well, it wasn’t like he had anything else to do, so he decided to just try and see what came of it.
The moment Jane stepped out of her room with a cup of coffee, she almost dropped it because he was standing right in front of the door with a smile.
"W...What happened?" She quickly ran a hand through her messy hair and cleared her throat to rid the uneven morning voice.
"I want to know the things I may have done unknowingly to cause anyone inconvenience, without any intention of doing that, of course." He stressed the last part, cheesing hard.
"Uh-huh." Jane took a sip and looked to her right. Darcy had just exited her room with a case of extreme bedhead.
"Darcy, get the folder."
"I’ll be back." Darcy’s voice was much deeper than usual as she rushed back into the room.
"Folder? What does that mean?" Thor looked around without a clue as he was sitting on a chair, a lamp shining at his face.
"I will now read you a list of your crimes. You have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney." Darcy wanted to put Thor in handcuffs, but the one she had didn’t exactly fit the setting. Pink fur and serious trial didn’t exactly mesh well.
So, the trial of Thor began, under the unenthusiastic sigh of Erik Selvig and a Jane that could barely contain her laughter because of his serious expression.
Still, the list of crimes was a serious problem. From jaywalking, breaking a mug at a café, to attacking doctors, and breaking into what was labelled as a government facility.
It was a real wonder how Thor hadn’t ended up in jail yet.
Still, the man in question had little clue about what he did wrong in these situations. But for the sake of it, Thor decided to understand things from the perspective of others. For that, he asked questions.
Lots of questions.
But Jane, Darcy, and Erik weren’t annoyed for once, because there was this unmistakable sincerity in Thor’s eyes. And for the former two, it was hard to turn away a handsome man seeking knowledge with just an intense gaze; Jane especially had a tough time and barely got anything done at all.
She even had to follow him to Isabela’s café the next day, where he had caused a ruckus by smashing a cup.
"I am sorry for what I did." Thor apologized as he had caused damage to the woman’s property; even if unintentional, it was still damage. "If there is anything I can do to help and make up for it, please tell me."
Jane herself had thought that Thor would only apologize, but he seemed a bit more invested in this than she had expected. So, when Isabela was about to say that it was ok, since Jane had already paid for the smashed mug, the young woman in question winked at her.
’Young people these days...’ Isabela shook her head, wondering what type of play this was.
"Well, if you have time, there are things I need help with." She smiled politely.
"Alright then, show me the way." Thor cracked his knuckles.
