Chapter 162: Chapter 162: The Crown’s Secret

"Mm, this is definitely a dark magic item, tied to some dimensional demon," Ancient One said, examining the black crown closely.

"Which demon? Aren’t you the keeper of the Time Stone? Shouldn’t you already know everything about this?" Emma asked, looking doubtful when she realized Ancient One didn’t seem to know the demon’s name.

"If I used it to know everything, wouldn’t life become unbearably boring? I don’t rely on it for every little thing. Besides, people like you, variables, can shift the future in ways that create far more possibilities than an ordinary person would." Ancient One looked at the crown again. "Let me check. I remember seeing this symbol somewhere before."

She turned and headed toward the library, leaving the two girls behind.

"Don’t they have magic for this? Like a wave of the hand and the book just flies over?" Emma muttered, watching her leave.

"They should, right?" Morgan replied absentmindedly, still thinking about what the Ancient One had said earlier.

A while later, Ancient One returned with an old book written in Sanskrit. She placed it on the table and carefully opened it, stopping at a page covered in strange symbols.

"I found it. This crown belongs to a dimensional demon whose power comes from change itself," Ancient One explained, pointing to the symbol in the book. "That’s probably why it kept pushing Mercer to change history. The more he changed, the more it could feed on those changes."

Emma looked at Mercer, who was still trapped inside the containment gadget.

"So that’s why he kept changing history? The demon was feeding off everything he changed?"

Ancient One nodded.

"Exactly. Mercer was its vessel. It couldn’t directly influence this world, so it used him to affect reality instead."

Emma frowned.

"So... Mercer was the chosen one?"

"Chosen one is just a name," Ancient One replied. "To a demon like this, people are nothing more than pawns. The crown gave Mercer power, but there was a price for using it."

She closed the book slightly and looked toward Mercer.

"His soul became corrupted the moment he accepted that power. When he dies, his soul will belong to the demon."

Morgan looked at Mercer and shook her head.

"Another guy who thought he was clever, only to find out he was just a disposable pawn."

Ancient One nodded.

"You don’t need to worry about him anymore. Without an anchor, the demon can’t directly affect reality."

She picked up the dark crown and looked at it carefully.

"Leave the crown and Mercer to me. I’ll make sure neither of them causes any more trouble."

Morgan released Mercer from the containment gadget. Still tied up, he fell onto the floor, unable to move his hands or legs.

Emma looked down at him.

"He looks weak. You didn’t feed him anything?"

Morgan froze for a moment.

"...I forgot."

She had been so focused on fixing the time machine that Mercer had completely slipped her mind.

Emma gave her a look.

"You forgot to feed the guy we captured?"

"I was busy fixing the time machine."

Emma shook her head.

"Okay, let’s just leave him with the Ancient One."

Ancient One nodded.

"I’ll take care of him."

Trusting the Ancient One, Emma and Morgan left Mercer and the crown in her care. They didn’t need to worry about what would happen to the artifact anymore. The Ancient One had promised to take care of both of them, and they knew Mercer would be punished for everything he had done.

Neither of them felt the need to stay and find out what happened next. They had already finished their part of the mission.

"Okay, main problem solved," Emma said as she headed back toward their room. "Now we just need to wait for Dad and little Mom to arrive, fix the time machine, and head back to our own timeline."

"Yeah. Let’s get started on repairing it so we can leave sooner," Morgan replied with a smile, feeling proud that they had managed to handle something this big on their own, without any help from the adults.

While Emma and Morgan worked on a way to repair the time machine, on the other side of the world, deep within a snowy mountain range, a hidden Hydra base sat surrounded by thick layers of snow and ice.

Inside the base, the sound of music played softly through one of the offices. Red Skull sat behind a large desk, calmly listening to the music while looking through several reports.

For once, he seemed to be in a good mood.

The door suddenly creaked open.

Red Skull slowly looked up.

"You’d better have a good reason for interrupting me, Doctor."

Dr. Zola stepped inside, holding a folder tightly against his chest. He looked nervous as he approached the desk.

"Yes, sir. We just received a report from our spies in America."

Red Skull leaned back in his chair.

"Go on."

"Dr. Erskine was killed by our men," Zola said carefully. "But before he died... he succeeded in creating a Super Soldier for the Allies."

Red Skull’s expression changed slightly.

"Erskine succeeded?"

Zola nodded.

"Yes, sir. The American experiment was a success."

Red Skull slowly stood from his chair.

"And the soldier?"

"Steve Rogers. He’s the only successful subject."

Zola adjusted his glasses.

"America finally has its own Super Soldier."

Red Skull stared at him for a moment before turning toward the window. Outside, snow continued to fall heavily against the glass.

"So Erskine finally managed to finish what he started."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Interesting."

He turned back toward Zola.

"Keep a close eye on this Rogers. I want to know everything about him."

"Yes, sir."

Zola was about to leave when Red Skull suddenly stopped him.

"Wait."

Zola turned around.

"What happened to Mercer?"

Zola hesitated.

"We’ve searched for him, sir, but there’s been no sign of him. Our spies haven’t found anything, and the Allies don’t seem to know what happened to him either."

Red Skull’s expression darkened.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing, sir."

Red Skull slowly walked back toward his desk.

"Find him."

Zola swallowed.

"Of course, sir."

"No one simply walks away from Hydra after taking what we gave them." Red Skull’s voice became colder. "Mercer had access to our resources, our people, and our information. If he’s alive, I want him found."

"Yes, sir. I’ll have everyone searching for him immediately."

Red Skull looked directly at him.

"You’d better."

Zola quickly nodded and turned toward the door.

As soon as he stepped outside, he let out a quiet breath, relieved to be away from Red Skull’s presence.

Inside the office, Red Skull returned to his desk and picked up Mercer’s file.

He stared at the photograph for several seconds.

"Mercer..."

His fingers tightened around the file.

"You’d better be dead..."

He slowly smiled.

"...because if you betrayed Hydra, you’ll wish you were."
