Marvel: Terror Stream

Chapter 62: Ch 61: Good Cop, Bad Cop, Spider-Cop

By the next morning, the plan was set. Captain America, Natasha, and Gwen prepared to leave the safehouse to give Jasper Sitwell a not-so-friendly visit to extract whatever secrets were locked inside his shiny, bald head.

An average-looking black SUV was idling near the exit of the underground safehouse. It looked average, but it was reinforced.

Since this was meant to be a stealth extraction, the team needed to be small, mobile, and extremely capable. Only Steve, Natasha, and Gwen were going.

Thankfully, even though Nick Fury and his loyalists had been forced entirely off the grid, they weren’t exactly living in the Stone Age. Maria Hill had easily pulled Jasper Sitwell’s entire schedule for today.

The trio was almost ready to leave. Natasha was casually loading some firearms into various pockets and hidden holsters under her clothes.

Nearby, Steve was quietly sliding his vibranium shield below the front passenger seat.

Gwen stood by the trunk, inspecting the mechanical web-shooters on her wrists. The web fluid levels were a bit low, but they should easily last for today. Thankfully, Hill had already assigned some people to synthesize a new batch for refills.

Gwen couldn’t don her flashy Spider-Woman suit since Hydra was looking for her, she also couldn’t go out without a mask. So, for now, the medical mask would have to do the job. Her spider-mask was inside her jacket’s inner pocket as well.

But right now, she looked less like a superhero and more like a celebrity trying very hard to avoid the paparazzi at an airport.

Fury stood near the garage pillars, watching with his one good eye as they finished their preparations. Maria Hill stood quietly right behind him.

Gwen slid into the backseat, making sure her web-shooters were completely hidden under the sleeves of her brown jacket. Natasha hopped into the driver’s seat, adjusting the rearview mirror.

Steve was just about to climb into the front passenger seat as well when Fury finally spoke up.

"Before you go," Fury said, "you need to understand the situation you’re walking into."

"Hydra knows I’m still breathing. They know I’m a threat. As of six this morning, I’ve officially been declared a national traitor and a highly dangerous fugitive by the World Security Council. And so has Spider-Woman."

Gwen’s muffled exclamation leaked out of the car.

"It means every single piece of S.H.I.E.L.D. surveillance is now working for Hydra," Fury continued, ignoring her. "No matter how quietly you do this, no matter how clever you think you are... once you make contact with Sitwell, they will know."

"Which means today, I want you to save your strength. When they come - and they definitely will - I want you to prioritize escape. Get out. Stay alive. Avoid the fight at all costs."

Steve let out a tired, almost exasperated sigh. "We always try to find a way to avoid the fight, Fury." He climbed into the passenger seat and pulled the door shut. "But the fight always seems to find a way to us."

Natasha didn’t waste another second, hitting the gas and speeding the SUV out of the safehouse.

Fury watched them go, his expression unreadable. Hill stepped forward to stand beside him.

"Sir," she said quietly, "Steve has deep attachments to his past. When he finds out his best friend is now a Hydra weapon, he won’t handle it well. It could jeopardize the mission."

Fury nodded slowly. "I’ve already given Romanoff separate instructions." He paused. "And the fate of the world is more important than one man’s friendship. And when the moment arrives, Steve won’t need to be told that."

Then he turned. "When are Professor Xavier’s men arriving?"

Hill followed after him. "The majority of their team is in China right now. They are stuck in a struggle against U-Men. But the Professor has assured that some of his most capable X-Men will arrive here by the end of today."

"Hm," Fury nodded.

The help was very limited Thor was out of the world, and Banner was out of the question. Besides, like Barton, Bruce was too far to arrive here without a Quinjet.

Yesterday, Fury had wanted to call Stark to help them out as well. But after Hill reported her encounter with the Jester, he no longer had the option.

After all, he couldn’t let Steve Rogers, Winter Soldier, and Iron Man together no matter the cost.

The Jester had revealed to Maria what the brainwashed Bucky Barnes had done to Stark’s parents.

The Jester had already given a bloody warning to Steve Rogers.

The Jester would love to watch everything burn.

On the roof of a tall building...

Steve aggressively shoved Jasper Sitwell, his patience wearing dangerously thin.

"What’s in this drive?" Steve demanded, "What is Zola’s plan?"

Sitwell, to his credit or perhaps to his immense stupidity, just smiled. It was an annoying, stubborn, punchable smile.

"Zola?" Sitwell repeated innocently. "Never heard of him."

"What were you doing on the Lemurian Star?"

"I was throwing up," Sitwell replied as he got shoved towards the edge of the roof. "I get seasick. Is this little display meant to insinuate that you’re gonna throw me off the roof? Because it’s really not your style, Rogers."

"You’re right," Steve said flatly as he stepped aside, "It’s not. It’s hers."

Natasha Romanoff stepped forward, her expression utterly bored, and kicked Sitwell squarely in the chest.

"WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"

Sitwell plummeted backward off the edge of the building, his terrified scream fading rapidly as he fell toward the busy streets fifty floors down.

Natasha turned to Steve, completely ignoring the fading shriek. "You know, you should really think about dating someone. Get back out there. What about that girl from accounting? Laura?"

"Lillian," Steve corrected, his eyes still fixed on the edge where Sitwell had disappeared. "Lip piercing, right?"

"Yeah, she’s cute."

Steve sighed. "I’m not ready for that."

His mind and heart were always Peggy’s...

Their casual banter was interrupted by a familiar thwip sound.

Due to the butterfly effect, there was no Falcon in this timeline... yet.

Gwen swung up over the edge of the roof, one arm holding the back collar of a very pale, very shaken, very screaming Jasper Sitwell. She landed lightly on the gravel surface and deposited him unceremoniously on the ground, where he immediately curled into a fetal position.

Steve and Natasha casually strolled over to the trembling man. Sitwell instantly scrambled backward, holding his hands up in sheer terror, crouching down on the concrete like a scolded dog.

And just like that, Sitwell squeaked out everything he knew.

"Good-cop, bad-cop, and the Spider-cop," Gwen remarked, adjusting her sunglasses, after Sitwell gave them everything they wanted.

Ten minutes later, the SUV was tearing down the highway. Sitwell sat in the backseat, his mouth webbed shut by Gwen for excessive complaining.

They needed Sitwell to bypass the DNA and retinal scanners at the Triskelion to directly infiltrate the Helicarriers before they took off.

Gwen sat in the backseat, beside the bald man, and Steve was in the passenger seat, his shield leaning against his knee.

Natasha drove, weaving through traffic.

As the car accelerated, the hair on the back of Gwen’s neck suddenly stood straight up. Her spider-sense flared violently.

THUD.

Before anyone could react, a metal arm punched through the rear window on Sitwell’s side, showering the backseat with shattered glass.

The metal hand grabbed for Sitwell’s neck...

But Gwen was already moving, her fist shot out, intercepting the metal arm mid-grab.

BANG!
