As the car accelerated, the hair on the back of Gwen’s neck suddenly stood straight up. Her spider-sense flared violently.
THUD.
Before anyone could react, a metal arm punched through the rear window on Sitwell’s side, showering the backseat with shattered glass.
The metal hand grabbed for Sitwell’s neck...
But Gwen was already moving, her fist shot out, intercepting the metal arm mid-grab.
BANG!
The metal arm collided violently with Gwen’s fist. The sheer force of her punch sent the metal arm violently recoiling back out the shattered window.
"Whoa!" Gwen yelled over the roaring wind. "Aggressive hitchhiker!"
"Hold on!" Natasha yelled. She viciously wrenched the steering wheel left, then right, trying to aggressively shake the Winter Soldier off the roof of the speeding SUV.
Thump. Thump. BANG! BANG! BANG!
Heavy-caliber bullets rained down from above, but the bullets pinged off the reinforced frame of the SUV, leaving dents but no penetration.
"He’s not going anywhere!" Natasha called back. "Someone get him off!"
"On it!"
She quickly fished her Spider-mask out of her jacket’s inner pocket, yanked it over her head, and scrambled right out of the shattered window.
The wind whipped around her as she scaled the side of the speeding vehicle.
The Winter Soldier barely had a second to register her arrival before Gwen twisted her body and delivered a devastating horizontal kick straight to his torso.
And the myth, the ghost story... he didn’t even stand a chance.
The force lifted him clean off the roof. He tumbled backward onto the highway, his metal arm carving a trail of sparks as he used it to brake against the asphalt, skidding to a halt in the middle of the lane.
Gwen barely had time to catch her breath before her Spider-Sense screamed again.
She whipped around. Ahead of them, a black van had screeched to a halt across the highway. Two strange men in tactical gear were kneeling beside it, and one of them was aiming a rocket launcher directly at the SUV.
"Guys?!" Gwen yelled, "I wouldn’t trust Hill’s claims about anything’s durability! Abandon ship!"
"Hang on!" Steve bellowed.
Natasha slammed her foot on the brakes. The heavy SUV instantly went into a massive, sideways drift. The tires screeched, smoking against the asphalt, and then the vehicle caught an edge and flipped into the air.
Steve broke the passenger door. Natasha, knowing what he was going to do reached into the back, grabbed the webbed-up Jasper Sitwell by his fancy suit collar, and practically threw herself and the bald Hydra agent against Steve’s side as they fell out of the flipping vehicle.
The car’s door would protect them from the direct skidding impact from the asphalt, and Steve’s vibranium shield would hopefully protect them from bullets.
BOOM!
The projectile hit their SUV.
Gwen dove off the roof at the exact same moment. She shot a webstring on a nearby streetlight on the overpass and fired another web, cocooning the falling trio of Steve, Nat, and Sitwell mid-air.
With a powerful swing, she carried them completely off the overpass, dropping them safely onto the street below. She landed lightly right beside them, quickly snapping the web lines to free the huddled group.
"Well," Gwen sighed, dusting her hands. "Our car is toast. Anyone know a good Uber driver willing to pick up fugitives? I had a really bad cab driver yesterday."
She was strong, but she couldn’t exactly swing across the city carrying three full-grown adults like a sack of potatoes while a Hydra militia fired rockets at them.
Just then Gwen’s senses buzzed again.
"The car isn’t the problem," Natasha said, rising to her feet and jutting her chin forward. "They are."
Gwen followed her gaze and groaned. A welcoming committee had already arrived to greet them on the lower street level.
There was Doctor Olivia Octavius - aka Doc Ock. Landing beside her with mechanical wings and a beak-shaped mask was the Vulture.
Just then... a sharp zzzzzt echoed from behind. A metallic ropeline hissed down from the overpass highway. The Winter Soldier slid down it, dropping heavily onto the roof of a parked silver sedan.
The car’s roof caved in beneath his weight.
He hopped down onto the street, casually resting a heavy automatic rifle on his metallic shoulder. His cold, dead eyes locked onto Steve.
But Hydra hadn’t just sent their favorite ghost story.
Two more figures leaped directly over the edge of the overpass, landing on the street beside the Winter Soldier with heavy thuds.
These were the same two figures that had fired that rocket launcher on their car above on the overpass.
One was hunched and grotesque, a long, slimy tongue lolling from its mouth, dripping viscous saliva onto the asphalt. The other one had four thick, muscular arms sprouting from its torso, each one ending in clawed, calloused hands.
Mutants. The kind that didn’t get invited to Xavier’s school.
Captain America, Black Widow, and Spider-Woman. Surrounded on both sides. Outnumbered. Outgunned.
Jasper Sitwell’s knees finally completely gave out. Realizing the scale of the danger, the bald agent began frantically crawling backward on his ass, his eyes wide with pure horror.
"Hmmm!!! Hm!!!" muffled, pathetic pleas escaped from behind the thick layer of webbing covering his mouth.
Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!
Gwen shot a glob of webbing at him without looking, cocooning him firmly on the road.
Steve stepped forward, his eyes locked dead onto the Winter Soldier.
"I’ll handle the Winter Soldier and the mutants," Rogers issued the orders. "Natasha, you help Gwen and find us a ride. Gwen, you’ve fought those two before. You know their weaknesses. Break their toys, disarm them, and they’re nothing without them."
Without another word, the trio split up. Natasha drew her specialized batons, crackling with electricity, and fell in step beside Gwen as they marched toward Doctor Olivia and the Vulture.
Captain Rogers, meanwhile, walked entirely alone toward the Winter Soldier and the two snarling mutants.
And then the fight exploded into chaos.
High above, on the roof of a nearby skyscraper, a lone figure stood at the edge, gazing down at the pandemonium below.
"Hm," Veritas hummed, tilting his head with interest. "Of course, it’s not just S.H.I.E.L.D. that made special preparation. Hydra brought a little welcome gift for Miss Spider after all..."
His phone hovered behind him, the camera focused on the battle unfolding in the streets below. The stream was live, but only for his patron viewers.
[Yeageristo: holy f*! starting a stream with a massive street brawl! so damn exciting!!]
[Yeageristo donated 1 TP!]
[urPP: A new stream after just a day? we eating goood tonight]
[urANUS: fk u man why is the action happening so far away!! they look so tiny! standing so high up on a building with your arms crossed. You’re not Piccolo lil bro...]
[The Fool Fan: Spider-Gwen is obviously there, but I’m honestly surprised to see the people she’s fighting with AND against.]
[PrettyInRed: who tf are those ugly guys tho? Mutants?]
[enemies_to_Lovers_enjoyer: OMFG!! is gwen in civilian clothes AND her spider mask?! gawd damn. I love this get up! Peak aesthetic.]
[Cosmic_Johan_Leibert]: Interesting that Hydra deployed mutants too. After all, in this world, they wouldn’t have left the chance to experiment, train, and brainwash them as well...
[Your_name123: yk you should buy the System feature that gives streamers an OST or background music. it can auto-play the best music for a particular scene. its cheap too!]
Veritas raised an eyebrow behind his mask as he read the last suggestion.
’Background music... hm,’
It was true that buying new Terror Tools features was dirt cheap.
The phone telekinesis feature had cost him a measly 3 TP.
And the other highly important feature he’d grabbed after the Q&A stream had only been 10 TP.
But upgrading existing features... That was where the Terror Shop really gouged you. The hacking tool upgrade was sitting at a wallet-murdering 200 TP. Expanding the maximum broadcast radius cost 50 TP for every additional 50 kilometers.
’It’d be cheaper to just steal a S.H.I.E.L.D. satellite array than waste hundreds of points on range upgrades,’ Luke mused.
He navigated to the Terror Shop and searched the feature the patron had suggested. These features would enhance his viewers’ experience and in return, would probably fetch him exponentially more TP.
[Auto BGM: 2 TP]
He tapped the buy button instantly.
[Purchase Successful!]
Veritas looked below, staying perched on the ledge, letting the beautiful chaos below unfurl for another minute.
Then he stepped backwards. His gloved finger hovered above the...
[Broadcast Stream To All Devices | Specified broadcast radius: 100 Km (Max!)]
Today, honestly, there was no real requirement to stream to the people of Marvel. But he had to do it to maintain the consistency of his persona...
He cracked his neck...
’It’s showtime.’
"Greetings, people of Washington DC..."
