Jaxen POV

"Get to the point," I growled, my voice coming out rough with barely contained fury.

Callista swallowed hard, her trembling fingers smoothing nervously over her dress as she carefully watched my reaction. "I’ve heard stories about witches and dark magic," she finally said, her voice hesitant. "And honestly, that seems like the only explanation for how she managed to escape her execution and somehow end up here. So what if she..."

She trailed off, biting her lip.

"What if she used some kind of spell on him?" she whispered. "A spell that made the Alpha King completely obsessed with her?"

I opened my mouth to dismiss the sheer absurdity of what she’d just said, but nothing came out.

A spell?

It sounded fucking ridiculous.

Lorelei had never shown the slightest interest in dark magic. She’d always been weak, helpless, and pathetic, the cursed twin who couldn’t even stand up for herself. She didn’t have the power to cast a simple curse, let alone manipulate someone as powerful as the Alpha King.

But then again...

I’d spent agonizing months searching for her, turning over every possible stone and chasing every lead I could find, yet I hadn’t uncovered a single trace of her. Meanwhile, the Alpha King had been notoriously celibate for years, practically untouchable, and now, all of a sudden, he was publicly parading Lorelei around like she was the most precious thing in his world, acting like a fucking feral beast ready to tear apart anyone who so much as looked at her the wrong way.

None of it made sense.

The more I thought about it, the less it did.

Seeing me hesitate, clearly lost in the dark spiral of my thoughts, Callista stepped closer, her voice dropping into a fearful whisper.

"And now that she has the Alpha King’s protection..." She hesitated, glancing between me and her mother. "What if she wants revenge on us?"

Revenge?

The thought had never even crossed my mind.

Why would Lorelei want revenge on us? And worse, why would she use the Alpha King to get it?

She’d been mistreated by her parents for years because of that damn curse, but even then, she’d never talked about punishing them. Not once. Back when she was still with me, whenever I promised that I would make her my Luna, all she had ever talked about was finally having a peaceful life. A life where she didn’t have to be afraid of everyone around her.

"We didn’t do anything wrong," I said, my voice hardening as I tried to convince myself as much as I was trying to convince them. "Why would she come after us?"

All we’d done was serve justice.

Yes, maybe it looked cruel from the outside, but justice had never been kind. She had been caught betraying the pack, and we had punished her according to our laws. That was all there was to it.

At least, that was what I needed to believe.

"You saw for yourself how deranged she can be when she pushed me down those stairs just to get rid of our child!" Callista shot back, her voice breaking as she dissolved into heavy, shuddering sobs.

She squeezed her eyes shut, her whole body trembling as though she were reliving the worst moment of her life. And in a way, she probably was. She had nearly died that day. If we hadn’t forced Lorelei to donate her blood to save her, Callista wouldn’t have survived.

"Someone like her will stop at nothing to get what she wants." Her voice cracked again, and she wrapped an arm around her swollen stomach protectively. "And I’m scared, Jaxen. I’m so fucking scared. Our baby is due in just a few weeks... what if she makes a move? What if this time she actually succeeds?"

Callista broke down completely, her shoulders shaking as the sobs tore through her. Elara’s expression softened immediately, and she hurried over to her favorite daughter, pulling her into a tight embrace.

"Shh, Callie, calm down," Elara coaxed, gently rubbing her back. "The healer already told you not to stress yourself in your condition. Getting this worked up over that traitor is only going to hurt the baby."

"I’m just worried, Mom!" Callista sobbed into her shoulder, her entire body trembling. "I’m worried about my baby! I don’t care if I get hurt, but I can’t stand the thought of something happening to my child!"

Elara continued stroking her back, but then she looked over at me. The fear written across her face was no longer an act. She genuinely looked terrified.

"Jaxen... what do we do? Should we involve your father? This... this is just too much!"

I stood there in silence, my expression growing darker as my chest tightened. I didn’t have an immediate answer for her, but my instincts as an Alpha were already kicking in.

As much as I couldn’t stomach the thought of Lorelei with another man, Callista was carrying my heir. Whatever feelings I had about Lorelei, that child was my responsibility. As an Alpha, a husband, and a soon-to-be father, protecting my family had to come first.

I couldn’t allow anyone to threaten them.

"I’ll speak to the High Council during our meeting," I finally said, my voice cold and firm.

If I could use the High Council to secure my family’s safety first, then I could deal with Lorelei afterward. Once the Elders stripped her of the Alpha King’s protection, she’d have nowhere left to run. She’d have no choice but to return to the Silverfang Pack with me.

And once she was back, I’d figure out the rest.

Even if she fought me. Even if she looked at me with those same cold, lifeless eyes she’d given me at the banquet yesterday.

It wouldn’t last.

She had loved me once. I’d seen it. I’d felt it. Sooner or later, she’d learn to love me again.

And if she didn’t?

Well, it didn’t really matter.

I would have her either way.
