Jaxen POV
Just the thought of having her beneath me again was enough to make my cock harden painfully, something that hadn’t happened this intensely in months.
A low, primal growl rumbled in my chest as my mind wandered into places I had spent months forcing myself not to go, replaying all the dark, desperate things I wanted to do to her now.
Things I had deliberately held myself back from when we were together because, back then, I had stupidly believed she deserved my respect.
Clearly, I had been the fool.
She obviously hadn’t given a damn about respect when she was away. She had no problem opening her legs for only the Moon Goddess knew how many other men, so why the hell should I still care about showing her any restraint?
Honestly, if I was even willing to sleep with her again after everything she had done, she should consider herself lucky.
The thought alone made the corner of my mouth lift into a slow, cruel smirk.
Fuck.
My body was already reacting just from imagining Lorelei underneath me again, her body pinned beneath mine, and the thought of finally letting myself do all the things I had once forced myself to hold back from doing was driving me insane.
I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep pretending I had the patience to wait.
I wanted her.
And maybe it was fucked up, but after everything, a part of me still felt like I had every right to take back what had once been mine.
"Jaxen?"
Callista’s frail voice suddenly cut through my thoughts, pulling me out of the fantasy before it could go any further. I blinked and looked at her, only to find her staring at me with those tear-stained eyes of hers, studying my face like she was trying to figure out exactly what had caused the sudden change in my expression.
"What are you thinking about?"
Fuck.
Seriously?
Why did she always have to do this?
Every single fucking time my mind wandered to Lorelei, Callista somehow found a way to drag me back to reality.
It didn’t matter what I was doing.
I could be masturbating while thinking about Lorelei, fucking another woman while Callista watched, buried deep inside Callista herself, or even just sitting there doing absolutely nothing when my thoughts happened to drift toward her.
Callista always interrupted.
Always.
And right now, after almost a fucking month without sex, it was getting more irritating than usual.
My body was already wound tight, my patience was practically nonexistent, and instead of helping with any of that, Callista had spent most of the past few weeks complaining about one inconvenience after another.
At first, I had actually found it cute.
The way she would whine when something didn’t go her way. The way she would come looking for me whenever she wanted something fixed. Even the way she expected me to drop everything and deal with whatever tiny problem had ruined her mood.
Back then, it had amused me.
Now?
It was exhausting.
For fuck’s sake, she was the Luna now. She couldn’t keep acting like some helpless woman who needed everyone around her to cater to her every little complaint.
There were responsibilities that came with her position, whether she liked them or not.
It was about time she started carrying herself with a little more dignity.
At least sometimes.
I quickly schooled my expression, forcing down the heat building in my head, though my body remained tense with anticipation.
"I’m thinking about how to handle this," I said, my voice dropping as I started pacing again. "The Council Elders have a lot of power when it comes to the realm’s supreme court laws. The Alpha King might hold more power than most people, but even he can’t openly go against a unanimous decree from the Elders without risking a civil war among the high lords."
Elara stepped forward, wiping the stray tear from Callista’s cheek. There was already a flicker of hope in her eyes. "Can they really strip her of her status? Can they force the King to hand her over?"
"If we present her as a convict who escaped a lawful execution for high treason, then yes," I replied, moving toward the large stained-glass window overlooking the gardens. "She belongs to the Silverfang Pack. The moment she was sentenced, her life was forfeited to us. The Alpha King harboring a runaway traitor from a sworn pack could easily be seen as a direct insult to the Council’s authority."
I stopped by the window, staring down at the sprawling courtyard below. Beyond the gates, I could see the gilded walls of the Alpha’s estate in the distance, surrounded by heavily armed guards.
"It’s not guaranteed, but it’s worth a shot," I continued, my jaw tightening as my thoughts drifted back to Lorelei.
To the way her skin had glowed beneath the chandelier lights. To how fucking breathtaking she had looked.
I hadn’t even known it was possible for her to look more beautiful than I remembered.
"We’ll frame it as protecting my Luna, my family, and my pack," I said, my thoughts already racing ahead. "All we need is to get her back inside our territory. Once she’s there, the Alpha King won’t have nearly as much freedom to interfere."
I paused, considering the other possibility.
"And if she really did put him under some kind of spell..." I scoffed quietly, although the idea still lingered in the back of my mind. "Then I’m sure putting some distance between them will at least weaken whatever hold she has on him enough for him to start thinking logically again."
Hearing all of this, Callista let out a small, relieved sigh, both hands resting protectively over her pregnant belly. "And what if she tries to tell them her side of the story? What if she tells them we mistreated her?"
"Who would believe the word of a cursed twin over an Alpha and his Beta’s family?" Elara scoffed, her usual bitter confidence already returning. "She’s nothing but a worthless girl trying to play queen."
Before either of us could say anything else, a heavy knock echoed through the room, cutting our conversation short.
The door opened a moment later, and two tall guards stepped inside. The one who appeared to be in charge gave me a respectful bow before speaking.
"Alpha Jaxen," he announced. "The High Council Elders are ready to receive you."
Well, that was sooner than I’d expected.
But then again, maybe the Elders were just as eager to get rid of Lorelei as I was. After all, they’d made their feelings pretty damn clear at the banquet. They hadn’t exactly looked thrilled about the Alpha King publicly claiming her as his future Queen Luna.
So, adjusting my collar, I took a deep breath and let them lead the way.
