Mated To The Barbarian King Who Is My Ex-husband's Father.
Chapter 70: Kane Is Weak. The cool night air brushed against her face, whipping her blond hair back over her shoulders as she stood with her arms crossed firmly over her chest.
Only moments ago, he had been shouting at her, yet now he stood utterly speechless, unable to answer the single question laid before him.
"What do you have to say for yourself now, Cassius?" Alara demanded, her patience wearing thin. There was a dark, satisfying thrill in watching her ex-fiancé reduced to such a shaken, panicked state.
He hadn’t cared about her feelings in the slightest when he tore her heart to pieces, so why should she show him an ounce of mercy now?
"Did you come up with this whole lie just to frame me, Alara?" Cassius rasped, disbelief written across his features—though he couldn’t quite mask the guilt that had been eating at him long before this moment. "Do you even grasp the punishment for what you are pulling right now? Accusing me of attempting to assassinate the king’s wife? Have you lost your mind?"
Alara let out a weary sigh, rolling her eyes. If only he would stop wasting their time and confess the truth, she might actually consider asking the king to show leniency in his sentencing.
"Why would I ever want to murder her in the first place? Are you even listening to the nonsense coming out of your mouth?" he spat, his brows twisting in sharp annoyance.
It infuriated her that he was still clinging to this desperate act, hiding behind a facade when he was nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
The realm painted the King of the North as a harsh and ruthless monster, but the pack had no idea that his Beta was the true embodiment of everything they feared.
"When I first uncovered the truth, a small part of me held out hope that you would never commit such treason against your own Alpha," Alara said softly, her voice sharp as steel. "Do not mistake my shock for sympathy... I know you are capable of unspeakable cruelty, Cassius. But harming Kane like this? I genuinely thought he was your brother in arms. Do you even realize how deeply he trusts you? This betrayal is going to shatter his heart."
"Mind what comes out of your mouth, Alara. You are levying vile accusations against me, and I want you to drop this absurd act right now," he commanded sharply. Step by step, he narrowed the distance between them. "Why is it so impossible for you to move on? I do not love you, and trust me...I never did."
Her heart felt as though a spear had been driven straight through it. He had delivered the blow casually, as if her feelings meant nothing.
She hadn’t come out to these dark woods to re-open old wounds, yet here they were.
Cassius’s brutal words brought a sudden, sickening realization. It had never been his parents behind the broken engagement at all...He had wanted to get rid of her himself and had simply used his family as a shield.
Alara spat on the ground, revolted by the man standing before her. She was more determined than ever to uncover who else was plotting with him in the shadows. "I wish you realized just how utterly meaningless you are to me. Stop flattering yourself, traitor."
"You will address me with respect, do you understand?" Cassius growled, stepping closer. Before she could answer, he pressed on. "Do not ever dare accuse me of such treason again, or else..."
"Or else what?" Alara cut him off, letting out a sharp laugh. "You are as guilty as sin and you know it."
"The king will never believe a word from an omega like you anyway," Cassius sneered.
"Is that so? If he didn’t care to know the truth, he wouldn’t have handed me your tiger fur seeking answers in the first place," Alara countered, smirking as his face drained of color. "I needed to be entirely certain before I spoke up... and now I know without a doubt that you are nothing but a traitorous liar."
"Do you honestly think that by pulling a stunt like this, I’ll come crawling back to you?" Cassius demanded, his face twisted in a volatile mix of panic and rage.
"Get over yourself, Cassius. You are hardly the prize you think you are," she said, shrugging her shoulders with deep disgust.
He had always been this arrogant, yet she had been so blinded by love back then that she had completely overlooked his wicked nature.
Kane had been far more than a king to Cassius for as long as she could remember...they were practically brothers.
Yet Cassius had turned around and betrayed everything they stood for. But for what? Was it simple jealousy, or was it pure disdain because the new queen was a foreigner?
Why must things end up like this? Arianna was the only woman who had managed to melt the frost around Kane’s heart and stand by his side, so why was Cassius so desperate to see her dead?
"You know what, Alara? I am done playing nice with a slut like you," he hissed, his dark eyes glaring at her as if he wished to strike her dead with his gaze alone. "Yes... I am the one who tried to kill the queen. But the bitch just refuses to die. She is as stubborn as you are, and now I have to clean up the mess and deal with both of you."
"Cassius, this game of thrones you are playing...you are fighting on the wrong side," Alara warned him, her voice steady. "Who is poisoning your mind? Does your family even know about this? Did they put you up to it?"
"The throne was never meant for him," Cassius spat, his tone dripping with venom. "Kane was never supposed to be the Alpha. He is weak!"
