"Cassius, this game of thrones you are playing...you are fighting on the wrong side," Alara warned him, her voice steady. "Who is poisoning your mind? Does your family even know about this? Did they put you up to it?"

"The throne was never meant for him," Cassius spat, his tone dripping with venom. "Kane was never supposed to be the Alpha. He is weak!"

"Weak?" Alara scoffed, stunned that he could describe Kane in such a manner. "He is far from weak and you know it better than anyone. Or do you simply judge his strength because he refuses to be as cruel and wicked as you?"

"I don’t care what you think. I will keep fighting until the bitter end."

"But why?" she demanded, pressing him. "What could possibly drive you to this?"

"To strip the crown from the House of Kane and restore it to my own lineage where it belongs!"

"Even if Kane were to die, he has an heir—"

"Ethan is not his biological son and you and I both know it," Cassius interrupted, a bitter smirk playing on his lips. "No matter how desperately Kane tries to claim that woman was his mate, that she bore Ethan before she died... it is all a lie."

Alara shook her head, her voice laced with pity. "You shouldn’t have embarked on this dark path, Cassius. There was never any point. He is not going to live with the curse forever...it will be broken and a true child will be born to him."

"I will ensure that day never comes," Cassius let out a low, ominous laugh. "Tell me, do you have any idea that Ethan and his precious, innocent little queen are sleeping together behind his back?"

Alara swallowed hard, forcing her facial expression to remain unreadable so as not to give him the satisfaction of seeing her shaken.

She had only encountered Queen Arianna earlier that evening, but everything about the woman defied his vile accusations.

"I hope you aren’t doubting me, blonde," Cassius sneered, letting out a dark, mocking laugh. "You will soon see for yourself what the son does behind his father’s back with his precious wife."

Alara stared at him in utter disbelief, but every instinct told her it was time to get away from this lunatic.

She turned and made a move to pass him, but before she could take two steps, his hand shot out, clamping around her throat with a crushing grip.

The air was instantly choked out of her lungs, reducing her breaths to tiny, desperate gasps.

She clawed frantically at his thick wrist, trying to pry his fingers off her airway, but his strength as a Beta was far too immense.

His grip tightened further, and a surge of terror washed over Alara as she realized she might not survive the next minute.

Lifting her off the ground by her neck, Cassius slammed her violently against the trunk of a nearby tree. Still, he refused to release his stranglehold.

Alara’s legs dangled in midair, kicking wildly at his torso, but he absorbed the blows as if they were nothing more than swathes of wind.

He struck the back of her head against the rough bark again and again until her vision blurred and dark spots danced across her eyes.

This is how he intended to end Queen Arianna, Alara realized through the haze of dizzying pain. His plan failed with the queen... and now he is trying to finish the job with me.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Alara rallied the absolute last reserve of her strength.

Dropping her jaw, her razor-sharp fangs snapped out. She whipped her head sideways and sank her fangs deep into the flesh of his forearm, tearing down through skin and muscle to inflict maximum damage.

She showed no mercy. It was a bite for pure survival, and she ensured it left one of the most agonizing, crippling wounds he would ever endure.

Cassius gritted his teeth and tried to fight through the growing pain, but the bite cut far too deep.

If he didn’t release her immediately, the damage would only worsen...a deep omega bite like hers had the power to leave a mark that forced a Beta to bleed out like a low-ranking wolf.

Realizing the danger, he threw her to the dirt and stared down at her in shock.

"You wretched slut..." he hissed, staring at the thick blood dripping rapidly from his mangled forearm. "No wonder, they say your bites are a curse."

Alara lay battered on the forest floor, cleverly pretending to be far too weak to move. Blood seeped from her scalp, but with his hands off her throat, her lungs were finally drawing in sweet, desperate gulps of air.

"I will let you die the slow, miserable death you deserve," Cassius spat, clutching his bleeding arm tightly.

Satisfied that her injuries would finish her off within minutes, he spat on her face before turning and vanishing into the shadows.

Alara lay still, watching his shadow disappear. Her throat burned with raw agony, and her throbbing head felt as though it might shatter.

Once he was truly gone, it took every ounce of willpower she possessed just to twitch her legs.

Blood ran down her face, stinging her eyes as she dragged herself toward the exposed roots of a nearby tree. She was weak...dangerously weak but she refused to give up. Kane needed to know the truth before it was too late.

The entire pack needed to see the vile, two-faced monster hiding behind Cassius’s loyal Beta facade. The fool had actually tried to murder her just to guard his secrets.

What other dark schemes were festering within the hidden walls of this tribe? She knew Cassius wasn’t acting alone. He was conspiring with power-hungry allies who sought to place him on the throne...the very throne that rightfully belonged to Kane and his true bloodline.

Finally, dragging herself onto all fours, Alara paused. She took slow, steady breaths through her nose for thirty seconds, gathering her remaining strength before forcing herself up onto her feet.
