Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2604 - 2580: A Shot to the Soul

Devil broke through the first defensive line, the outermost checkpoint, but an airport is way too important to only have one defensive line.

One thousand Mi away was the airport, and at the entrance and exit of the airport there was another checkpoint with even stronger firepower, the last defensive line to be held in case of contact with the enemy.

When Devil had no choice but to take out this outermost checkpoint, they finally couldn’t slip past the enemy’s eyes; now the enemy opened fire, and a distance of One thousand Mi was nothing at all for an autocannon.

Joseph slammed the car into reverse and backed out fast, and then the autocannon stopped shooting.

The enemy didn’t use the autocannon to fire at the checkpoint that Devil had occupied; the only reason could be fear of friendly fire—opening up blindly before they figured out what was going on and wiping out all their own people would be unacceptable.

At this moment Li Jinfang was lying on top of the armored vehicle, shouting: "Who’s driving the armor!"

Gao Yang didn’t hesitate; he immediately barked: "Black Demon! Drive the armor!"

Using the Black Demon guys as regular infantry in this kind of assault operation was a bit of a waste. They couldn’t do better than Devil, and taking a bullet wouldn’t hurt them any less than an ordinary person; instead of having them carry rifles and act as regular grunts, it was better to switch them over to armor crew.

How to break through the enemy’s fire blockade—Gao Yang’s brain was spinning at full speed.

They’d already burned a full minute at this checkpoint. Taking out a checkpoint guarded by at least thirty soldiers plus an armored vehicle in one minute was downright miraculous by any standard, but given the situation Devil was facing, every single second’s delay meant the danger ratcheting up another notch.

But there was no way to deal with the enemy’s defensive line a full One thousand Mi away; all the weapons Devil had couldn’t reach that far. The gear they’d chosen for close-quarters combat simply wasn’t suited for this kind of fight.

Looked like they could only use the captured armor; the autocannon on it could reach, the only question was whether opening fire would trigger a ferocious counterattack. If that happened, Gao Yang would basically be locking the Black Demon boys into an Iron Coffin and shipping them straight to heaven.

But "at any cost" was aimed at exactly this kind of situation; when you’re facing a fork in the road where you can advance or retreat, the only choice is to keep walking forward without looking back.

"Use the armor to hit them!"

Gao Yang gave the order viciously; his expression looked savage.

The four old-timer Bosses from Black Demon had already climbed into the armored vehicle; at this moment the engine was running, the turret had completed its traverse, and then the autocannon opened up.

The autocannon roared, a dozen shells spat out, tracer bullets tore open the night sky, drawing a red trajectory.

Gao Yang didn’t know if the autocannon shells had hit the enemy’s targets; just as he was about to ask, he saw explosions erupt where the tracer bullets disappeared.

Violent explosions, one after another.

Gao Yang froze for a moment, then immediately shouted: "Good shooting!"

After yelling, Gao Yang said, a bit puzzled: "Is the autocannon really that powerful? Did we set off their ammo?"

Right then Gao Yang saw Rebrov.

Rebrov’s steps were a bit unsteady. He stared at where the explosions were happening, then yelled into the handset in his hand: "Original coordinates, armored infantry targets, whole company fire mission, extended-range HE, super-quick fuzes, full rapid rate of fire, let it rip! Waa..."

Rebrov finished his rapid-fire shouting, tilted his head, and suddenly started puking his guts out.

Gao Yang suddenly understood—Rebrov had already finished the fire direction for the second defensive line; what they’d just seen was the artillery’s first ranging volley.

Normally a ranging shot is just one shell, sometimes three; after the forward artillery observer makes corrections, then the whole battery fires for effect. But this time was different—even the ranging shot had to use every gun they had; even if the rounds were off, they’d still put a massive psychological hit on the enemy.

A truly competent soldier, when hit by corrected artillery fire, will take cover from the barrage; but Saudi Arabia’s soldiers? They usually just run.

And this time the ranging salvo happened to be dead on—one shot, straight to the soul.

Shells take dozens of seconds to fly. Rebrov had given the order, but it wasn’t like the rounds would hit the ground immediately. Gao Yang only felt time stretch out unbearably long.

"Wild Duck, what’s wrong with you!"

Rebrov looked like he could barely stand. He had just finished puking, but when he tried to move he tilted his head again and started retching all over.

Hearing Gao Yang’s shout, Rebrov turned his head, and said weakly: "I’m carsick..."

"F**k! How the hell are you carsick?"

"The ride in the truck was too bumpy, and I kept my head down staring at the GPS, calculating coordinates, then I got carsick, ugh, waa..."

Gao Yang pointed at Rebrov and yelled: "I’m giving you a big citation, no, two big citations! F**k! The enemy’s definitely in chaos. Wait, just wait! Let our cannon fodder show their power!"

After so long working at it, just to be able to get timely heavy fire support, Gao Yang had poured in endless effort. Devil was a team, but getting to where they were now, really getting big-caliber artillery support—every ounce of that effort was worth it.

At a moment like this, when the God of War could unleash hell, it was really worth it.

The second volley of shells came down. This time it wasn’t six rounds landing simultaneously; there was a bit of stagger in the timing. Listening to the deafening explosions going off one after another, seeing the enemy’s positions largely blanketed by fire, Gao Yang immediately said: "Wild Duck! One more full salvo and we charge!"

A distance of One thousand Mi—this was damn close to the targets of heavy guns, and Gao Yang’s people were in vehicles; One thousand Mi was gone in a flash. If they didn’t want to eat their own shells, they’d better wait, and only charge after the barrage stopped.

152-millimeter shells—their power was really, really, really, really, really huge.

After the third round of shelling ended, Gao Yang bellowed: "Armor leads the way, charge!"

"hooray! hooray! hooray!"

The armored vehicle surged forward at the head of the charge, and Tarta shouted "hooray" three times over the intercom.

Joseph shouted: "Russians just love yelling hooray."

The distance shrank fast; the second defensive line was now clearly visible.

The position at the airport entrance and exit was a wreck—cars burning, machine-gun nests blown apart, armored vehicles destroyed by direct hits, bodies on the ground. The barrage hadn’t completely wiped out the airport’s final defensive line, but it had dealt a sufficiently lethal blow.

The airport’s defensive line hadn’t been completely destroyed, because there was definitely more than this one position, but opening a gap in the airport’s defenses was enough for Devil.

"Punch through! If you see someone with a gun, shoot him. Brothers, let’s go!"
